Dual Survival, Stuntman vs. Wild, Man Woman Wild, Survivorman

Fact is that these shows make more people get out there and gets kids away from their xbox
I bet that it has actually saved more lives than it has costed lives, these shows also make people think about this stuff.. And people are certainly able to see that it is not wise to jump in unknown water from a cliff or all that stuff...they will pick out the useful parts imo...
 Yeah, give us, the viewers, some credit. If you can't see that 75% of what Bear does is almost purely for entertainment purposes rather than education (and knowingly acknowledges this fact in a subtle "wink-wink" manner) then you have bigger problems to worry about.

I don't see why people continue bashing Bear (or Dave). It is a TV show. TV is for entertainment. There are tips in the shows, but NOTHING on a survival TV show is a substitute for training and experience. If Bear wants to show off, who cares. It is entertainment.

As far as Dave - He only does what is on TV because it is entertainment.
 Media savvy and critical viewing skills are subjects not paid nearly enough attention to in the public education system. It's getting better, but there's still a frighteningly large number of "monkey see, monkey do"-ers out there who just don't seem to "get it".

Moving on, I'm curious as to why Ray Mears hasn't been included in this discussion.

I'd like to know what machete is that the bigger guy in the "Dula Survival" show is. It appears to have a reddish hue to the handle and it's pretty long.

The bigger guy who weilds it goes through trees like a freaking buzz saw. I want one bad but hev no clue which brand or size it is.

If anyone can I.D. it please post, I hate my 2 machetes, they can't chop more than tiny branches. That thing takes a couple shots and goes through small trees.!!

Never drink urine and Myke Hawke's wife isn't nearly as dumb as the show portrays her which leads to this (should be obvious) fact; It is all for entertainment.:)
None of these shows has at their core the mission to inform the viewer. If they did they would be a boring documentary on a PBS station and you would go to sleep watching it.:) Jeff and I have more than once talked about how a truely informative survival show would never have good ratings because the viewers would be limited to you guys here:) For ratings you have to have comedy, shock, awe, drama (lots of this), fear....well you get the idea-- the exact shows you are here discussing. None of it having to do with reality (the real reality-- not TV reality) which would be how comfortable you can be and undramatic and mundane the task of survivaing in any environment is. Yes there are unplanned events that happen but even they are well within the realm of predictability in any environment and you can plan for them.

So chill out guys and watch Myke and Ruth and Bear and the gang like you would watch J.R. and Bobby in a rerun episode of Dallas.:) Bring the chips and beer:)

Because I didn't think it fair for me to comment without having seen the show, I made an effort to watch a handful of Man Woman Wild reruns over the weekend, and I confess that I'm starting to like it. It really hits on something I mentioned earlier in this thread - you have one experienced survival expert tasked (burdened?) with helping an inexperienced companion, in this case a husband and wife team. Myke is very informative and infinitely patient, and as he offers instructions, tips, hints, etc to Ruth, he's ultimately teaching the viewer as well. Because of his wife's presence, he's very cautious and deliberate - he doesn't go leaping off cliffs or scaling cliff faces just because he can. lol There are some minor annoyances with the show, but all in all it's good stuff IMHO.

Almost forgot - someone mentioned that the R.A.T./ESEE crew knows this Myke fellow personally, or has worked with him?

Do you think that patience and calm demeanor come from his SF background?
I was thinking about this during the show - teaching his wife (and us viewers) some of these survival skills and tips can't be that much different than the mission of the Green Berets, right? When you get right down to it, in both instances (this TV show, his SF past) he's teaching skills to a bunch of inexperienced people of varying intelligence and proficiencies. As a Green Beret he had language and cultural barriers to overcome, too, so he's a perfect choice for a TV survival show.

I don't personally know Myke. Met him once, shook his hand but I was busier than hell tending to the booth at a show and couldn't chit-chat.

Jeff and Mike are either currently or are soon going to be teaching some classes with him stateside.

If I'm not mistaken, he was a survival instructor while in the military. That could most likely explain his gentle and patient demenior.

I watched a few episodes with my wife. It was amazing how patient he is with her -- to the point where it seems hard to believe. Do that same thing with a normal couple and see how long it takes to get all Lord of the Flies.

Why not? They all drink pee once in awhile - are they drinking yellow koolaid and saying to do it and laughing at us? Also I moticed that Myke always says he has a terrible headache, every show. Maybe it's his wife nagging him?

I've learned a lot about survival from the shows - DON'T LEAVE THE HOUSE! :D

I'm a huge fan of Cody Lundin. I recently purchased both of his books and I
must say he is a genius. He is a very gentle, wise man and I think a survival
series with Cody Lundin and Ruth England would be a better match than Ruth
and Myke Hawke. Let me know what you think of the Cody and Ruth show.

I think the Ruth Mykel team is amazing. Cody is also helpful and I also like his books. The barefoot thing bugs my though I don't know exactly why it does or should.

I may be a little harsh here but I think the Cody/Ruthie Show would a tad too "P*ss#" for most viewers.
The beauty of Myke and Ruthie, or Cody and Dave shows, is the presence of "conflict" (or at least aversion)... Makes good TV man..

I love Cody and totally respect his approach to the wild as a harmonious, team work effort, as opposed to "me against nature"... But he's a tad too passive and mixed with Ruthie the Turtle savior (Ha just a joke) I don't think it would make good tv.

That's the magic of film editing. I would bet my next paycheck that the rants and raves have been edited out. Either that or they are both saints.

Well for what it's worth,
My 10yo daughter doesn't care for Bear or Les... she will watch Dave and Cody with me if there's nothing else to do.... BUT!
She will come in from playing out side to watch Myke and Ruthie... and for me... that's wonderful! She is taking an interest in things most 10yo girls do not and she probably would not, if it wasn't for seeing another female out in the bush and surviving.
So sincerely, Thank you Myke and Ruth...

I was always a fan of Survivorman. Les Stroud also has a special, movie whatever you want to call it called Off the Grid in which he documents his family moving into / creating a self sufficient living arrangement with solar / wind power. Like I said I was already biased but I highly recommend it for entertainment value if nothing else. Also I never even thought about watching Man Woman Wild because I didn't think it would be any good, but I caught an episode on accident and ended up watching them all. His extremely attractive wife helped quit a bit. ;) Sexy looks good with a bit of dirt.

I would watch a show where Vern Troyer (Mini Me) locked inside a BevMo with a dozen silicon porn star/strippers with nothing but a HEST for a bottle opener and see who comes out alive. Each stripper is supposed to pull out their best tricks to distract Vern from opening a bottle of his favorite beverage.

At the end of each show we would just hose Vern off and toss him back into the Bev Mo for the next show.

Don't know if that should be called Survival of the Tittest or Mini Me N Me Vs the Strippers. But it really won't matter.

About urine, to let the body get rid of the proteins and salts in the urine (which is a waste product with noyhing useful for our bodies), your body needs more water to do that than is contained in the urine you drink. Therfore you will DEHYDRAte
The process has to do with resorption in the kidneys and the same is true for salt water.

It is sterile though, no bacteria... So yes, there is no reason to think pee is dirty :D

I DVR all them, plus more. (The Colony, Surviving the Cut, etc.)

My favorite is definitely Man, Wild, Wild. Great show.
Him and Ruth crack me up sometimes :p

I just got caught up on all but the most recent Man Woman Wild show from the YouTube channel that hosts them but noticed last night that the channel has been suspended. Aack! What am I gonna do now since I don't think we get these shows (M W W, Dual Survival) in Canada yet.

You're not missing that much if you can get the "originals" like the Les Stroud or Bear Grylls shows (forget the names and maybe spelled wrong).

These guys started it years back and thy're still far on top of the heap in my book. I do understand liking a show for it's people and such but straight up survival is covered by these two and they're on big networks.

I thought MWW was on Discovery channel not YouTube??
