Dual Survivor tonight...

I must say... this show has the best elements of Stroud's and Bear's shows: the pace is good and yet not crazy like Bear and just as informative as Les's without the boredom.

This is exactly right.

Dave and Cody are doing exactly what Bear does in his episodes, where they add elements to make it good tv watching (like rappeling down the crevice, and sliding down the waterfalls). Interesting to see them use the rope in the snow trick, like Bear did in his episode with Will Ferrell (although Bear did it with a stick, instead of the tear drop shaped trough). But I doubt we'll see them jumping out of an airplane or tackling a rattlesnake after been stung by bees.

Actually, you could have inserted Bear in this episode instead of DAve and Cody and you wouldn't have know the difference. (the only difference would have been that Bear would have ran everywhere instead of walked).

The first episode was more like Les Stroud(I refuse to call him Survivorman, because it sounds like a comic book hero). You could have put Les in the first episode and not know the difference instead of no hamonica play, (Thank God) and the fact that they bring 6-8 man crew along.

Before the series started, I expected to like Dave more, but through the first two episodes, I'm finding I like Cody a lot. Both good guys though...

Good Stuff. I'll keep watching.

Yeah - Cody has carried a Mora around his neck since I have been following him - that is what he advocates in his book '98.6 degrees'.

All the high dollar knives out there, and a Mora is what is carried. That is a cool feature of the show, even if unintended.

I just looked it up, and last night's episode will be repeated at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Sunday).

That's Pacific time here in San Diego: for local times in your area, you'll have to look it up.

Well said. I was most impressed by the second episode. I liked the fact that they were working with a single climbing rope. They are teaching me something about using resources.

The eel was definitely cool. I'm not convinced that Cody actually caught it with the sock.

The rope thing off the glacier was deceptive. I thought they were repelling down a cravasse from what they said. I couldn't understand why they didn't have any choices with a cravasse. But is was actually off a steep edge of the glacier as best I could tell.

I have to say Im a bit dissapointed... Too much "Man vs. Wild" -stuff on the 2nd episode. Rappeling down this and that, surrounded by cameramen.... I was hoping for a different kind of approach from Cody's show. But I guess the main purpose of any show, even on Discovery, is to be entertaining, not educational.

Still gonna watch 'em though. :o

Just watched both episodes on youtube this morning and I liked them.

Anyone with a large skill set that has missed their morning coffee will nitpick the details but this is a largely entertaining and informative show for 95% of the regular folk.
Look at the most of the crap on TV right now, this show is still better than 12 flavours of Law and Order ad nauseum.

Been following Dave for a few years now and Cody for longer, I respect both of those guys.

Even though the 2nd episode was a little dissapointing...

... I have to agree on this 100%

I'm enjoying it imensely!!

My girlfriend is even into the show.

I think they are doing a great job of presenting good material while keeping the show entertaining.

How many of you caught the earlier show "Discovery saved my life" ?

It had several vignettes of actual survival situations where folks actualy used what they had seen on "Survivorman" or "Man vs Wild" to save their asses in some nasty situations. Just goes to show that knowledge can be helpful no matter where it is gained.

Dave was going a little too Grylli Vanilli in this one. Hope we don't get too much of that Jackass vs. Wild repel-just-because-there-is-a-cliff stuff in the future.

Still a good show overall. Liked the net. Liked the grubs. Nature's fast food we used to call them. Liked showing how to make cordage. Eel trick was interesting. Maybe it was setup maybe not but there is no doubt that Cody can graze for food with the best of them just as there is little doubt that Dave is a very skilled hunter.

Dave was right about cooking the eel. It's always safer ESPECIALLY with a creature you're not even familiar with.

Hopefully the show continues to spark some interest in young people.

Natural cordage, net making, hand fishing, rope skills, whats not to like??

That "discovery saved my life" show was pretty cool too from what I saw.

Myself, I wouldve had a fire going while Cody was out hunting in case he came back with meat. You could at least boil water, make a tea, and have a perk in morale if he was unsuccessfull.

I like eel. Tastes cooked when Raw.

What I liked about the first episode is Dave's cantor. I talk a lot like Dave (not AS intense) but very direct. I think it is easy to edit Dave's words to make him sound a lot harsher than he actually is.

However, concerning the 'super shelter' built in the first episode - not only did Dave tell Cody that he was wrong about his opinion of the shelter - but then he asked, very earnestly, 'How did you build this?' He genuinely appeared impressed and wanted to learn.

I also love how they support each other by saying 'Good job!' and the like. Then they joke around to keep the mood light. I think those are great qualities to have.

Dave's knowledge of military style survival techniques are great to learn from (I would have told you that snow anchor was crap - but it worked perfectly) and Cody's ability to just 'chill' through a situation is awesome to watch.

I like the show.

I haven't seen the first episode, but really enjoyed last night's episode. Both of these guys are top contenders in the survival game and it's nice to see the different approaches they take.

I was fully expecting Dave to not really know what he was doing in the mountains, but his rope work was all solid (I spent a dozen years as an international mountain guide) and it was cool seeing him use a bollard, something a lot of younger climbers never use but has saved my butt many times. I may have done a few things differently but overall I thought they did good. I was very impressed with Cody as he stated multiple times that he knew nothing about climbing and was completely out of his element and scared. He did it anyways and had to rely on another person he doesn't know very well to get him through. How many of us have trust issues with people you know? How many would trust a virtual stranger to get you off of a mountain?

It was definitely cool watching Dave make the net. He did it much faster than I ever could.

It was also cool watching Cody make the cordage. His point about not knowing the plant but understanding it's properties was a good one. That was a pretty cool way to catch eels. I've used the old tied off burlap bag with offal in it to catch them on several continents and it works great, but the sock was very cool.

Overall I was impressed. I also saw a clip of last weeks episode with the amazing shelter Cody made. I never thought of anything like that and it's so obvious. He made a cool reflective greenhouse using the fire as the sun. Brilliant! I'm trying that out in the next couple of weeks.

:D I really enjoy the show. It is informative and a joy to watch. My only question is how did Cody and Dave get together? Their 2 different views of survival is very informative and educational.:D

If you watched the show, you might have seen that it was the attraction of Cody's anti-snowblind spectacles.:rolleyes:;):D

I've been catching the episodes on Youtube and I'm liking it just as much as Survivorman (if not a little more).

Cody had me laughing when Dave was explaining how they are going to repel down that first crevasse.

That 2nd episode was a bit too crazy! I think I like more instruction and less action. Loved the skills that they did show and the two of them were much more civil to one another this time.
