I'm sure this is probably a really dumb question but is it possible to use the scrap steel from say AEBL for bolsters? Why or why not? If so should I keep it annealed or fit up the bolted then send off for heat treat. I know forge guys do an integral bolster it's kinda the same concept but with stock removal. Thanks in advance

I just fitted a piece of cpm154 for a guard on a knife this afternoon. Not sure if it's thick enough for bolsters but definitely a thin guard. Leave it annealed.
 
Dang thickness was something I wasn't considering. I got .138 AEBL. wonder if I could stack it up probably not though
 
Good point. Well if I make a 7in knife instead of 7.5 or 8in OAL I'll have about 4.5in to work with so maybe a small pukko (Sp?) But I like the idea of small neckers.
 
Make some micro knives. They're a lot of fun and are actually pretty handy for daily tasks. I have a lot of examples on my instagram and website (I'd attach some pics, but they're not on imgur or photobucket). :)

I actually just commentedon that little tanto asking about the OAL lol very inspiring stuff. I actually have a knife drawing that inspired by a wharnie you did

YEP^^^I made a couple thin leather cutting knives. You will find a use for that steel.
 
It is best for most stainless steels to be heat treated if used on a knife. They will rust to some degree if not.

If you want unhardened stainless hardware, use a 300 series, like 303. However, 416 is also used a lot.
 
Sure, just remember that the bolsters may get some minor rust if left wet. I suspect lots of bolsters are made from cut-offs and scraps of blade steel.
