Dumb Things We Do With Knives

Just today I was flicking open and closed an old Gerber a buddy gave to me. The pivot is extremely loose on it, so with a tiny flick of the wrist I can get the blade flying out. After a few minutes of this I gave it and extra hard flick, and it went soaring out of my hand and into the air, then came down right on my pointer finger. It tore off a big chunk of skin and was not a fun experience.

This makes me want to ask what are some of the risky/stupid/dangerous things that you've tried with your blades and what the end results were? (Maybe I wont feel so bad about cutting myself after hearing other people's stories)

I was reading online and I had my Pacific salt freshly sharpened in my hand opening and closing it. I had it open in one hand and the other hand was working the mouse pad. A fly landed on my neck so I instinctively raised my hand to brush it off but accidentally hit my middle finger on the blade. Push cut a big slit in it. That was really dumb on my part.

Ive picked up my Bali by the bite handle unintentionaly a couple times also:o

I used my Spydy Bug to open a package and closed it but, didn't move my thumb all the way outta the way....slit the top of my thumb open...those little guys stay sharp!

Well I just got my Kershaw Blur in the mail today while I was on my way to work. I started flicking it open and close while I was driving. While flicking it open, I manage to slice the leather wrapped steering wheel of my new car :(

Sharpened knives to being "too sharp" by most people standards and well whatever it touches it cuts no matter how little the force. That includes flesh too if you slip up and it touches you the slightest. On the plus side I can tell you from my experience that very sharp knives either don't hurt or hurt very little when you get cut.

More than once I have tried to lightly flick my Native 5 open. Lightly.
So light, that the detent stops it halfway and I almost cut my flicking finger.

I have an old Kershaw Scallion assisted flipper that carries tip down. Forgot to slide the safety mechanism to lock the blade closed. It opened about half way in my jeans. I squatted down to get under a car and felt the tip graze my nuts. Never carried it again!

I know a guy that's missing an eye because of that same thing, it was a screw driver though. A good sharp knife probably wouldn't hurt as bad and may be easier to fix.

That would be a plus on the knife's side, wouldn't it.

just for the sake of the thread.

I dropped an xacto knife once and for some stupid reason I immediately tried to hit it with my boot, to keep it from hitting on the blade on the concrete floor.

not sure why I did it, just did, damn thing stuck right in the top of the toe of my boot. Thunk, went in about 1/2 an inch. Just got my toe, but cut a nice hole in the goretex of my boot.

Stupid move, now if I drop one it goes to the ground.

I think it's dumb that we open and close a knife many times without actually using it. I still do it... and it's still dumb.

Get carried away with shaving arms hairs with freshly a sharpened blade....eventually you look like a freak with one half shaven arm and have to explain what happened to those you know lol.

I sharpened a fixed blade for a friend once. He left it on his table, and when his duaghter's boyfriend saw it, he decided to take a look at it. Held the sheath with the throat pointing away from his thumb, towards the base of his hand. When he pulled it out of the sheath, he brushed the blade over his hand. A whisker deeper and he would have needed 3 stitches, but hey, at least it was sharp. :)

One time I was trying to penetrate a bottle with a Cheap Chinese Swiss Army Knife. The bottle was plastic but it was really thick plastic. So I decided I might get a knife and make a hole in it, my Swiss army knife was close so I grabbed it. I was pressing into the bottle with the blade and the blade folded onto my finger and I pretty much punched the bottle as hard as I can with the blade on my finger. It wasn't a serious cut but it wasn't just a nick either. It took awhile but I got the bleeding under control and after about a week or two it was healed. Now I just have a scar on my finger to remind me to not do something like that.

New to knives so my main mistake is forgetting to carry it. Seems every time I leave it at home, I find a need for it.

Managed to stab my hand holding the wood a few times while whittling. Wear a kevlar glove know while whittling and when I don't have it I only use small push strokes. And I always carry bandages.

Carried a box of knives with no sheaths in an old cardboard box. Box gave out and I tried to catch a wicked sharp custom knife on its way to the floor. Got a number of stitches to remember that by.

I was sitting at my computer trying to get comfortable opening a brand-new Kershaw Echelon with a thumbnail flick on the thumbstud. Insufficient grip on the handle and the knife sort of popped out of my hand, inertia from the very strong assisted opening combined with an awfully lightweight handle sent the blade forward and drove the tip into a 19" Dell lcd monitor.

Lol, did the shaving my arm thing once. The second time i shaved my part of my leg, didn't dawn on me till later that it's too hot to wear pants in July.

Was cord wrapping my Izula while still in the sheath (wanted to be safe) pulled the paracord too tight and pulled the knife out of the sheath and through my fingers, I got luck, some nice cuts but no stiches.

Last weekend I tested the lock-up strength of my skyline by pushing on the back of blade fairly strongly. It closed, yes. My index finger was in the blade's path of travel unfortunately. The cut was pretty deep.

I went to go find a band-aid in the bathroom. I opened the medicine cabinet door, left it open, bent over to check the under-sink cabinet. On the way back up I hit my head on the corner of the medicine cabinet door I left opened. It opened up a two-inch slice down my scalp that caused a thick bloodstream to flow down my forehead.

I think I fainted. My wife was already in bed and had to come to my side, wondering why I was leaking from a couple spots and lying on the floor. Definitely wish I had a time machine! Both cuts have already healed very well though.

About 20 years ago, in high school, a friend of mine sliced his thumb very severely whittling. It literally cut from base to almost the tip in a curving front to back arc, he had to actually have surgery due to tendon damage and the lingering effects of it were an issue for him getting into the Naval Academy during his medical evaluation (he got in).

I was laughing so hard reading this, tears started.

I was showing a friend my new Yojimbo2 from Spyderco, while sitting in the drivers seat of my car. I dropped the knife while it was tip down over my... well my groin area I guess. Obviously the instinct to protect my future progeny kicked in, and I caught the knife by the blade before in could puncture an important part of my reproductive system.

Bad cut to my thumb, but it was one cut on my digits I didn't regret...
