Dumb Things We Do With Knives

When I was a kid i had just sharpened a cheap pocket knife of mine with one if those pull through carbide sharpeners and wanted to see how sharp it was. I guess i had never really owned any steel that was decently sharp, or maybe it's just how nasty the burrs those things bring up can be. Anyways i ran the blade along my thigh and it tore right through my jeans making about a 4 inch wide gash of decent depth. Was so ashamed of what I had done i told my folks i was sick and stayed in bed with my leg locked straight to keep the wound closed for about a week. I would wait for them to leave the house to spray it with disinfecting solarcaine so that they couldn't hear my screams. You only make that mistake once lol.

I once used my condor machete to cut a small branch in my backyard. I cut at a downward angle and cut a good 1/2" of flesh out of the shin of my leg. It was a huge open wound, but no blood since it was right on the bone, no stitches either.

Another time I had an Xacto/hobby knife and was cutting a piece of cork. The knife went right through the cork and through the tip of my pointer finger too. It literally cut my fingertip in half, you could see the bone and joint inside the cut. If I remember correctly I needed at least 5 stitches, maybe more. This was way back in high school! I remember the hospital I went to was really congested and I had to wait about 30 minutes to get called in. I was standing in my own blood waiting for stitches!

I was back in high school and after school ended a few students and I were hanging out just outside; there was a student in the grade above mine who insisted that his new jeans were stab-proof. As a test he borrowed my SAK, proposing: "hey, watch I'll stab my jeans and nothing will happen." Of course, the blade went right through the jeans and he had to be rushed to hospital. The stupidest thing I did with a knife was loaning one to him.

I've never been injured by knives beyond very tiny pokes.

Naturally, posting this will probably lead to losing my left ear and right big toe in a freak somersaulting-with-knives accident.

A few years ago I cut my left pointer finger to the bone with a BM mini ambush, a trip to the ER and 12 stitches later I was good to go. Now the real idiocy that occurred was that I was cutting the top off a frozen juice box.

I was talking to a shop mate and was dropping my knife onto what I had assumed was a solid tired forklift tire assy. Imagine my surprise when that monofilled tire started hissing. Yeah I broke the tire down and patched the tire and felt stupid to boot.

Lol!!! I was thinking close to the same thing while reading the first paragraph!

Just today I was flicking open and closed an old Gerber a buddy gave to me. The pivot is extremely loose on it, so with a tiny flick of the wrist I can get the blade flying out. After a few minutes of this I gave it and extra hard flick, and it went soaring out of my hand and into the air, then came down right on my pointer finger. It tore off a big chunk of skin and was not a fun experience.

This makes me want to ask what are some of the risky/stupid/dangerous things that you've tried with your blades and what the end results were? (Maybe I wont feel so bad about cutting myself after hearing other people's stories)

Yep! I did the same thing you were doing! I had a Swamp Rat folder that was really loose, after a little practice I could wrist flick it open. I kinda became a nervous habit with me. I had just started dating my girlfriend of 10yrs now, and was sitting in her living room one afternoon. Her and her sister, plus a few other relatives were sitting around when I started playing with my knife out of boredom. After a few good openings I managed to flick it out of my grasp, across the room, and through the curved glass front of an antique curio cabinet. Major mishap!

Worst knife accident was when I stopped at Go-Mart one morning for gas about 5:AM. They take all of the hold open features off of the pumps there. I was on my way to work and running a little behind, so I threw a zip-tie on that bad boy and went in for coffee and a roll of snuff. When I came out, I tried to cut the zip-tie off (should have never done this without first drinking the coffee) and my Spydie slipped and bit me to the bone on my other thumb. It was a nice clean cut but deep. I went to work after leaving a puddle of blood at the gas pump. After everything got rolling I went to the local ER. The Doc was really cool, said that he could probably glue it since it was so clean. I told him that would never cut it in my line of work and I didn't need to make more than one trip to the ER. He said, "It is going to hurt so bad numbing it that I can probably throw 3-4 stitches in it just the same, if you think you can stand it." I'm not RAMBO, that crap hurts! I did alright with him doing the sewing, but I could never stitch myself up!

I've been careful to avoid having a blade in hand while doing Spetsnaz rolls around the store at work since posting this. Still nervous.

I have an old Kershaw Scallion assisted flipper that carries tip down. Forgot to slide the safety mechanism to lock the blade closed. It opened about half way in my jeans. I squatted down to get under a car and felt the tip graze my nuts. Never carried it again!

It's all about carrying it in the left pocket, so it can't open unintentionally!!!

Refuse to go into details, but once I accidentally cut open my girlfriend's (at the time) ex-boyfriend's arm open with a tiny little Nemesis Impel. The night just went downhill after that....

I've been bit by my knives a couple times just playing around (stupid, stupid, stupid. Still do it though) just flicking and opening and closing. Especially my Benchmades. love thos things. One day, I had my Kershaw Blur on me, and I wanted to flick that around. Well, I did, and somehow, I was walking into my friend's house, talking to him, and playing with my knife. I got a phone call, so I answered it. A few seconds later, I noticed my hand got really warm, since the Blur had cut probably a half-inch deep into the side of my index finger. Not quite to the bone, and it didn't hurt, until I bandaged it up. Thing was so sharp though..

Another time I was sitting on a stool at one of those high work tables, the ones that require you to sit on a really high stool. I was using an xacto knife, and it slipped, so I went to go catch it in mid-air, and I did. For some stupid reason, my hand didn't stop though, and I drove the blade all the way down into my thigh, through my jeans. OW!

I was building a somewhat large fighter knife. Blade grinding was finished and I was polishing it, pointing towards me. Then something happened and I've got up, several seconds later I felt something in my right upper leg.
The fighter blade worked really well, even it was before the hardening.

Apple in right hand,,,,, knife with new lanyard I was proud of in left hand,,,,, shut back door to house on the way to shop and closed door on lanyard!!!!!!! Fell back!!! Wife gone,,,,, thumb hanging down off hand!!!! Long story short I was in surgery for 2-1/2 hours sewing my thumb back on!!! As a side note Doc said I could really sharpen a knife well!!!!!

Ok, this one was not me. My dad is feuding with his neighbors. He made a spear out of a dowel and an xacto blade, to reach over the fence and poke holes in their hose. Before he got to use it, he dropped it and cut his leg pretty bad.

I was testing a finger guard (pushing my hand towards the blade) and the finger guard didnt help much ): Sliced my finger up with a serration

What does a Scallion run like $35? You almost got a great deal on a vasectomy.

I've had many bad cuts but one of the worst was actually this morning with my RAT-1. Edge was hair popping sharp but i wanted to touch up the tip real quick since i did some stabbing recently and it was a bit dull. So rather than setting my stone down i held my small 3000 grit stone in my left hand while grinding down the tip with moderate pressure. One slip resulted in this. Severed artery, nerve damage. i should probably see a doctor but i'm tired of stitches and hospitals. We all try to be careful with our knives but a momentary lapse in judgment has the potential to end up pretty bad. It's a bitch to play League of Legends now... not to mention... you know.... using my left hand at all.

SIDE NOTW: I don't consider small cuts like this "Not Safe For Work" or offensive but if anybody is unsettled by it (and i don't know why they would be... this is BLADEFORUMS) then i will remove the images.
