He's just sucking up as UL or one of his mates has the the
.... 2....................................O...........Teeeeeee

Jamo, if you think I'm sucking up for a stupid old 2OT, then you know me better than I thought you did.

Larry303, if there's anything I can do for you...

.....children stop that bickering now!.....
I just read your posting Pygy re your late grandfathers store and I really hope you find some Schrades.....I got my unopened box of Mint Ulster Barlow 10OT's with the original Ulster backing board some years ago from just such a shop........and it was full of old hardware items as well.... old bloke died and his grandson went in and found them all so good luck....
I'll tell you another true story...my eldest son is the same age as Jamo ..41....Jamo would have me adopt him tomorrow and he could inherit my knives...<have you seen Jamo?...dont know I want to dive into that gene pool!>..anyway I digress...I have given my son several knives which he has never used and his wife has hidden them from the children <my grandchildren> as she despises knives....my son has never asked to see any of my knives <2000 plus Schrades + Militaria> on his visits nor has he ever even seen any of them because he has not asked..so not everyone is interested in knives as we who are, seem to assume......he wouldnt have a clue what a Schrade or a 2OT was and nor does he care..he just knows I have some toys in my den.....sound unbelievable?...its not he's a perfectly happy family man with wife and two kids who has no interest in my knives or machetes,or bayonets, or gigantic bowies or....hey maybe thats whats scary about my den...!,,.Hoo Roo......

Sorry Pygy it should read UL is sucking up because he is feeling guilty that he or one of his mates has that 2ot :D
I don't know what UL will give you if you drop a knee in front of him

UL thanks for the pool mate but have been swimming in Bundy Rum so I can look just like you .:D

Did you try using the word Schrade on your son ? It worked on me

Tonguey thanks for the photo's I am your Kin mate I liked the Percherons three in hand that poor dead bastard in the gutter with the kids playing .

Jamo, mentioning dropping a knee and tonguey in the same post is a little disturbing:eek::D

Say Michael, weren't the handles outsourced, at least until the move to the big Ellenville plant? I've seen mention of a company called Crown Plastics in a number of memos and invoices, both by Schrade and Imperial. I'll see if I can round a few of them up.

Eric

Hmm, is it a coincidence that the name Crown Plastics strangely coincides with the Imperial crown logo? Was it a division perhaps?

Imperial had it's chome plating company too. Last handle scales were outsoursed overseas, though not sure where. All that pretty dyed bone? Boker Germany. Shields were outsourced for quite a while too. Until MIM became feasable inhouse, IIRC. That is powdered metal molding, where we see the raised letter/border/emblem shields.

Eric, do you have an example of a full shot of handle scales with runners intact? Or at least a picture?

thanks for the bump guys. michael, larry, ex-schrade employees, all that contributed to michael's research.
thank you

Michael, I definitely don't have an example, but a picture is a possibility, albeit a slim one. Believe it or not I'm having a pool put in tomorrow (my old one was on the losing end of a pool/tree fight this past winter), so I'll have time to rummage through some paperwork.

Michael, got a few invoices here from Imperial with orders from some different handle manufacturers. Last one's kinda interesting;)
The scanner actually picked up the page underneath the first three invoices as well, so you can read two at once:D:

Eric - There are two invoices for Ulster specified 100.000 covers for 50OT, both say "Staglon". Do you figure they were really Delrin covers for the 58OT? I can't say I've ever seen a 50OT that was not bone, and only about three or four of those.

Hal, those actually say 50-T, I think it's more an item # than a knife model. I"ve seen nothing in the Imperial catalogs regarding a 50-T model number on a knife.
Not sure if they're OT covers though as they do mention staglon (and no shield cavity), maybe UH? Old Timer cover orders I've seen are referred to as "sawtooth" on the order sheets.

Well, they do say "with OT Shields" Very interesting documents to say the least.

Ahhh, so it does, I was looking at the wrong bill!:o:D

It's a mystery to me, guess I'll have to do some more digging

Eric

A lot of the year end production records and internal memos had the "OT" split up like that, even some of the ads and price lists. A 5OT might be called a 50 T

My point was 100,000 50OT or 50T in Delrin, and I've never seen one, and only a handful with bone handles.

OK Michael, here's a little handle cornucopia, there's even a gen-u-wine stag slab thrown into the last pic. If I'm not mistaken I believe the reds are from the SMKW SFO's:

They're pretty self explanatory, but if you've got any questions, fire away!

Eric

Neat! I see several I regognize, even without the dye and the holes punched. One looks like the Imperial Kit Carson (I have a Schrade like that), and two in that last pic look like 171UH (2nd gen), then the 153UH. Second picture down is evidently sampler knives. Third looks like Imperial lockbacks for scrim. Next is 156OT Little Finger in black? Do you know the pattern the red scales were used on?

The "peg" sticking straight up on some of those shots is the gate where the molten plastic is injected into the mold. Most of these would have been roughly clipped from the runners with a bit extra left attached, and placed in a die which sized the pieces to length to fit the bolsters snd punched pin holes in the correct location at the same time. Of course, they would have gone thru the dye baths first, except for the very last production which received the dye bath last (thus the dark lines where the scales meet the bolsters).

Thanks Eric!

Michael,

You got me on those red ones. Intially I thought, without REALLY looking at them, that they were 165 handles, but that's WAY off! I'm actually inclined to believe that they're for kitchen cutlery, maybe off one of the Imperial lines? Gonna have to check some catalogs. Might even be Betty Crocker:confused::D

To the right of the 171UH handles is I believe a handle for a 172UH.
