I have seen handle materials such as Box Elder , Spalted Maples and others and Burls or other figurative woods in various dyed colors that look very nice as well as those in a natural state . Do you prefer dyed or natural and if dyed what color do you like the most ? I`m just curious as to what`s more popular or the best looking .
Thanks

I don't like them unless they are dyed or stained to look like a darker natural color or at least "sympathetic" colors that can appear in nature like red and yellowish hues. . Blue and green just don't do anything for me. With that said, many others disagree with me. Look at the modern electric guitar market for proof. A Les Paul with a blue flame maple top? Huh?:D

Personally, I would never buy the dyed woods if left to my own devices. Sometimes however, my wife will decide "we" need some green or blue figured Maple. To my dismay, it always sells right away. It certainly can look very nice when finished well.

Look at Hatcher's handles and tell me dyed wood doesn't look great. YMMV. Jess

Don, black or darn close to it dark brown are naturally occuring colors in wood. Perhaps not in any oak other than stuff that had been stewing in a peat bog for 5000 years, but you know what I mean. ;)

I have a good bit of wood dyed when stabilized.
The main dye I use are brown, and black. Red and green are good for kitchen knives.

Woods that look great dyed and stabilized:
Sycamore - brown
Box elder burl - red, green, black, brown
Buckeye burl - black
oak - black
Maple - brown, red

On the whole, I don't care for using the dyed woods myself, with a couple of exceptions. I love using yellow dyed box elder or maple burl in combination with African Blackwood. Very classy. I've also used orange dyed maple a couple of times that turned out quite nice.

Yes, I like more naturally occurring colors.

But you do stretch that definition a bit albeit not with wood. i seriously doubt that there were any mastodons walking around Siberia 50,000 ago with royal blue toofers, but yes, that is arguably a "natural color" in fossil mammoth ivory. :D But let me ask you this. Have you gotten to the point where you can talk about black oak and not have an image of Jim Dandy Mangrum and his furry Proto-Ug boots pop into your head?;)

"Black Oak Arkansas". "It all came from the Ark..........." :)

Brown dye tinted off a bit caramel matching ironwood coloring is nice.

Natural blue is my favorite chit, but you know that.

I'll have to look up "Jim Dandy Mangrum". Never heard of him?

I like in the order of Blue, Red, Green & Purple Dyes and combos of two to three of them. The wild colored Maple & Buckeye sell fast!
I have no shame when it comes to brightly colored handles. The ladies and most guys love em!

Also if its on a camp/hunter. The man/woman can find a lot faster if the put it down on the ground while processing an animal etc.

Yes, but you ae a slightly older cat from Cali, so you may have actually thought that you saw trees those natural colors at some point in your misspent youth, perhaps with dragons being ridden by Jim Morrison perched in them. . :D

I don't think I would call Black Oak Arkansas rednecks.

Back on the subject of dyed wood.
Most bright, bold, vivid and obnoxious colors sell good for me.

With that accent? You must be joking!!!! He is like a Lil' Abner version of David Lee Roth, although to be fair, some have said that Roth may have actually been influenced to some degree by Mangrum's stage antics..
Back to our originally schedule program. I have noticed that stuff like your blue dyed maple burl has been going as fast as free doughnuts in the lobby of police headquarters. What are folks using all of that stuff on?

I din't misspend any of my youth, and It was at a Black Oak Arkansas concert and there were naked ladies painted with Neon colors!
Then I grew up and voted for Reagan.

The majority of my customers did the Woodstock/Gratefuldead circuit so they love the bright ones as well! ;) They now drive Prius cars to save the planet too.
