I've read up on the matter and am still a bit confused about the whole procedure!

I'm having my little sis' send me some micarta scales (because you can't find the damned things in Europe) for my BK2 and I'd like to put a dark gray or even black finish on them.

Possible or impossible?

Thanks, my brethren!

I used RIT powder (dark brown), and mixed it with salt and hot water according to the instructions, then threw the scales in for a few minutes. They came out like this.

Many use the liquid RIT indiluted, but I could only find the powder.

1. file scales if necessary to appropriate smoothness
2. sand scales if necessary to appropriate smoothness. I only took mine to 200 but some dudes have sanded theirs with really high grit levels and even used a buffer.
3. get a glass jar or plastic tray. pour clothes dye (we use RIT in the US typically) in deep enough to cover scales. let sit an hour or so.
4. remove scales and wash off in the sink then set out to dry. pour dye back in jar.
5. wipe scales with a few coats of tung oil and let dry. color will be richer after this step.

the photo below shows the difference between a dyed scale with and without the tung oil.

I forgot step 6.

6. enjoy the eye-boners your new scales will give you.

Thanks guys!

Any idea what's in that dye as I can't get that specific product where I'm at?

Leather dye will work too, go to any saddle or leather shop, or just go to a boot/shoe store and get black/brown leather dye.

If your after a more exotic color, Rit is the way to go. I use the liquid undiluted with great results. Warm it up, drop the scales in for 20 minutes or so, take them out rinse with cold water to set the color and voila Fin

Widerstand made a video on youtube about how to dye micarta. Try searching him on the youtube.

Do you think that would work on a bark river with an antique white handle.(not mine but a friends)

Lecter, go to a Schlecker and ask them for fabric dyes. I've spent months looking for RIT here, to no avail. The dye they have at Schlecker (Rossman and DM, too!) are good, I've never tried them on micarta though.

It's not rust, it's patina, pfft.

Actually, since the antiquing on my 11 and hawk turned out pretty much perfect, and I finally got it dialed in on my warthog, I think i'm going to take it off the BK2 and do something else with that one.
