Dying micarta HELP! **SOLVED!!**

Bumping this for some serious help guys!

Got my scales today and just gave them a soak in some black dye and it didn't do squat! :(

Help please!

Never dyed any micarty, but the exposed fibers of the canvas should be more than enough to take the color! Did you sand it a little bit with P220 grit to raise up a few fibres? You can (and should, most of the time) take about twice the recommended amount of salt.

No, I did not sand at all!

Was that my mistake?

You others, feel free to chime in whenever you feel like it!! ;)

I think there have to be some exposed fibers to take the dye. It might not work if you don't have any exposed fibers.

Jo, kein Ding. We should meet up sometime, if you ever come to Berlin and have a spare afternoon or so, let me know.

Sanded the scales down and dyed them again and still a no-go!! :(

What am I doing wrong??

No idea, maybe the dye is somehow not strong enough. Have you tried finding some RIT dye here in GER, maybe in an online shop or something?

ETA: I found some RIT dye on amazon, but it would be shipped from the US and cost about 15€ shipped. damn.

Yeah, I looked and no dice! :(

I'm going to try some of the liquid dye and see if it makes any difference...

I'm just really surprised that no one else has tried this on here!

A few people have tried, ad they succeeded. IIRC, Widerstand dyed his micarta handles dark brown, Jarod got a nice dark OD tone, both with Rit Dye.

MMM Tit dye. Good stuff. I've occasionally gotten wood stain to work on micarta. It IS kinda finicky stuff and takes a while to soak in though.

Guess I need some Tit's then...

If your having alot of trouble with the dye, a black sharpy works too.

cricket

Wouldn't that bleed all over my hands though?
