My wifes grandfather came down to see us and brought me a birthday present. I am close with this man. I los my grandfather to lung cancer when I was 8, and the other died before I was born. So he is like a grandfather, and friend to me. I really didnt care about getting a gift from him, and he usually just brings me some gloves, or a handshake. I was just happy I was gonna see him today. My grandmother passed away saturday morning, and Ive been pretty bummed this weekend.

Well he comes in my house and sits down at the dining room table - Thats usually straight where he goes, he thinks my couches are too soft. hehe.

We talked for awhile bout the weather, farming( hes a steer farmer. 80 years old, still works kis butt off from dawn to dark every day), and hunting stories.

He got up went to his truck and came in carrying this. He said, "Happy birthday son, now dont you think you are gonna get out of bird hunting with me in the spring" :).

He gave me this, a Mossberg 500 12 ga, with a 24in ported choked barrell!

This was the gun I usually use bird hunting with him. He taught me how to hunt, and did it with this gun. I means an awful lot to me and he knew it. I am happy he thinks enough of me to know that I would like this, and gave it to me instead of one of his real grandsons. Makes me feel good. But.. I am the only one that goes up and bird hunts, and coon hunts with him, so no suprise I guess.:o

It brightened my day, since Ive had a rough past couple of weeks. Cant wait to pop some quail with this thing. I can already hear the dogs.:)

Wow, that's an awesome gift, make sure you enjoy some dirt time with the old guy now and be sure to take some picks when ya do !!!!

Ps. Sorry to hear about your loss as well bro, it's never easy to lose someone close !!!!

Wow J!

That is awesome and I'm glad you have such a bond! I haven't had a grandfather for a very long time either. I lost mine when I was 11.

I'm glad for you on that. At the same time, I'm sorry to hear about your loss and having a rough couple of weeks. Keep your head up, let me know if you need anything.

Thanks guys. It means alot...

And, Thanks to all of you who have sent me the kind words in emails and PMs. Its really helped me get through this.

Happy Birthday Jake. Thoughts and prayers sent for your family on your grandmothers passing. Congrats on having a friend / grandfather like that.

Chris

You guys should see the ancient damascus barrel side by side he bird hunts with. I would never shoot it, but he looks at me and says, "Aint that what its for?" "Been huntin with it for a long time, so was my daddy, and it served him well too.":D How can you argue with that?

Will do man. I need to fix this man up with a nice GEC slippy or somethin.

Happy bday and sorry to hear of your grandmother. I lost my grandpa about 6 months ago. It's tough.

That 500 will be something you can pass to your children or grandchildren. Cherish it!!

Very nice post j and you deserve it too.
Also this will make the perfect defense against the mad JK test knife - it is still out there !!! :D

Sorry to hear about your loss, bro !

Isn't that the best birthday present ever :)
It's great!Get the man a nice knife :)

That is awesome! An heirloom with a great deal of meaning, I am sure you will treasure it. I too lost one grandfather to lung cancer, and the other died before I was born. Condolences on the loss of your grandmother. It's rough.

Sorry about your Grandma, she is in a better place and not suffering anylonger as I know you know.

That is an awesome gift you got there Jake!!!! He sounds like a great guy!

I'm sorry about the losses of your grandparents, but none of us live forever, and life goes on. WE have to become the grandparents in our turn, and pass on what they brought to us. Your wife's grandfather sounds like the best example of this.

wow.. what a great gift indeed... i like those mossberg's.. i have a 20 ga. and my dad has a 12 ga..

i bet grandpa is a cool guy to sit and listen to...:) cherish these times J...

Thanks guys. I love mossbergs for hunting shotguns. The safety is easy to flip quickly and easy to see if its engaged w/o having to look on the side.

Hes an awesome man. Really hard to talk on the phone to. He just sits there and hollers hello? Whos this? Hello? Its funny, hes waay old school.

Has a million stories too. I think its tragic when we lose any elderly person. Thats alot of knowlage gone. Thats why I listen to them so much, and love the part of my job that puts me in the truck with em for hours on end to talk to.

Thanks guys, I appriciate the kind words....

Thanks man. Its rough to come of age w/o a grandfather. My grandma was special for many reasons, one of which she had to be both grandpa and grandma since I never knew her husband.

He is Mike. You would dig him. You shouldve seen his face when I told him I was gonna take my bow bird hunting this year a couple times. He rolled his eyes and said, "Now damnit, if you take more birds then me and youre usin a bow, youre walkin home!":D
