This week I took advantage of my stay in Colorado to arrange a visit to Kifaru. I had been wavering on getting a MOLLE Express or an XRay, so I wanted to try them on. I ended up liking them both, and some of the others as well. My most pressing need was for a smaller pack, and being an organization freak I was leaning toward the Xray. The most surprising thing was that I liked the old version of the XRay (G1) better than the new generation (G2). Because it is a smaller, shorter pack the added lumbar padding actually made the pack less comfortable, since it didn’t actually hit my back in the lumbar region. The fact that the G1 packs are on clearance made it even more attractive. So I decided on a G1 XRay and they had one on display in foliage, which was the color I wanted. Unfortunately, it didn’t have the shoulder straps as they had been canabilized for another order. So I thought I’d have to wait. (The normal wait for a Kifaru pack is 6-8 weeks).
Here is where I have to talk about how amazing the customer service was. Not only were the employees friendly and helpful, they went far above and beyond the norm to make my visit amazing. They did a series of things that each were very helpful, but as a package truly astonished me. First, the one thing I really did like better about the G2 pack was that it had a tab loop for hanging a hydration bladder, so they offered to take it into the shop and sew one in on the spot. Second, because they wanted to let me take the pack with me that day, they got the seamstress to drop her current task and sew up a pair of shoulder straps right then. Third, they put together a matching foliage chamber pocket on the spot. Finally, they put all the gear together (I also got an organizer pouch and internal lock and load pocket), so I could take it all with me. All in all I was incredibly impressed with the customer service.

As far as the pack itself: it is clearly a superior product. I have other good small packs, but this XRay is leaps and bounds better. The only thing I can compare it to is when I bought a Dana Design Terraplane 20 years ago that was so much better than anything else I had seen. The fabric, zippers, and stitching are significantly over-engineered, making it bombproof. I see no reason why it won’t be going strong years from now. Best of all for an organization freak like me, the pack has a number of well thought out features: a top external pocket, an internal pocket under the lid, a hanging chamber pocket, a chamber for a water bladder, and two pockets on the inside of the panel opening. The MOLLE webbing on the outside makes it possible to mount a number of options on the outside. Right now I only have an organizer, which is a handy pocket for all sorts of things. (Right now I have a SAK and a KM matchcase w/compass among other things in the organizer). On the inside I have one lock and load pocket mounted to the inside of the panel increasing the organizational possibilities. I intend to mount two liter plus pockets on the sides to house a GSI stainless cup and two nalgenes (or Guyot bottles). The pack also has bottom straps for cinching gear to the bottom of the pack itself, and it has removable stays so that the pack can be individually fit (or simply lightened for smaller loads). So far I’ve only walked around with light loads, but the pack feels great and I look forward to taking on many longer excursions.

I’ve attached some pictures to illustrate the features of this pack. Based on my initial experience with the packs and people of Kifaru I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Great review! We're getting ready to move...the Army pays for contracted movers, but I still do a "DITY" with a trailer for my guns, knives and high-end outdoors gear. All my Kifaru packs are being transported by me...I don't trust morons to move and lose or damage my Kifaru gear!:D

I love my XRAY. I don't have the organizer pocket--that looks pretty nice. But it's a great little day pack.

The only thing I can compare it to is when I bought a Dana Design Terraplane 20 years ago that was so much better than anything else I had seen.

Did you check out Dana's new Mystery Ranch packs before you decided on the Kirafu? (Neat stuff.... I bought the Crew Cab and some accessories and I love it.)

That is a great looking pack. I've been on the quest for the perfect pack for a long time (aren't we all!). My current carry is the Max Condor II, which seems pretty good, but some time I will have to look at the Kifaru stuff a little closer.

Great story, and that looks like a great pack!
Wish I had the $$ right now. I was highly impressed with the Kifaru stuff a friend showed me, but they weren't what I was looking for. That X-Ray, though...mmmm.

Do you have the Terraplane Overkill? I looked for one after they were discontinued, but never found one. Got the Astralplane version, and it's awesome, but buying it was a mistake. It's WAY too big.
My tent actually fits in one of the outside pockets with room to spare...

Rock, I don't blame you for moving your own guns, knives and Kifaru! I would too.

Rotte, I love the organizer as an add on, but like I said I'm an organization freak. I don't like digging around in my pack for things. So I like internal organizers, color coded stuff sacks, etc.

desmobob, I did consider mystery ranch, but the MOLLE set up on the XRay was the clincher in my decision.

mneedham, the Condor II is what the XRay is replacing in my case. Its a good pack and it will become my car bag (in the back of my suv fully-loaded and ready to go, in case I need it). But the XRay is just superior in quality and US made too. No knock on maxped, I like their stuff and use a lot, but Kifaru is clearly a step up IMO.

Owen, you are exactly right. My bigger pack is the Terraplane overkill. I think they only made it for a year on some special anniversary of Dana Designs. I think a grenade could go off inside with little damage. (BTW with the Astralplane, isn't it big enough to use as a bivy sack? :D) I just like all the attachment options of MOLLE gear. I know Kifaru isn't cheap, but if you're thinking about an XRay you should look into the G1 packs before they are all gone. It was $100 cheaper than the new version.

That is just awesome. Wow. I live 20 miles up the road, I'm going to have to stop by. Do you need to call ahead, or can anyone just stop right in?

Kifaru makes excellent stuff. I have a G1 non molle Express that I love. Their 08 closeouts sure are tempting...

Glad Angie and the crew took care of you. Awesome gear.

I can understand your decision.
I have a few packs and bags covered with MOLLE webbing and always thought it was overkill. But two of my favorite bags have none and I wish they did....

You do need to call ahead. They aren't actually set up for retail, so someone actually steps away from their work to help you. That's why they need to plan for you to come. They usually are available Mon-Thur. Give them a call.

Kevin, the whole crew did indeed take care of me. I was really impressed.

XMP, thanks for the review and picks. I love my Tailgunner I, which replaced my Jumbo Versipack. I'm in the market for a XRay to replace my Maxped Pygmy Falcon II. I'm wondering if you have owned both and could offer any insights for the size comparison between the two. The xray appears wider (minus the bottle pouches) but the height measurements appears to be the same. I'd love to hear any comparison thoughts etc.

Thanks for the review and pics, this is the Kifaru I've had my eye on...though it's going to take a bit of saving up...

Wanna sell it ? PM me.

I do have a Pygmy Falcon, which I use quite regularly in moderate weather. Unfortunately, it is back in Minnesota and I'm in Colorado for a month, so I can't give you a side-by-side comparison. However, I can tell you that the XRay is a much bigger capacity pack. However, I do have a Maxpedition Condor II with me (which is quite a bit bigger than the Pygmy Falcon), so I'll attach a couple of shots of the XRay with it. As you can see the XRay is actually bigger than the Condor, although it may be slightly trimmer front to back. Overall, the Xray is a more capacious pack than the Condor (and thus quite a bit bigger than the Pygmy Falcon).

BTW this just proves that you can't always trust manufacturers cubic inch estimates, since I think the Condor lists at 1950 and the XRay at 1800, but the XRay is bigger.

Hope that helps.

That helps a lot. Thanks for the comparison shots. It does help me think about the various sizes. You could certianly pack a lot more in the xray than the pygmy. Thanks again.

I think they made them for 2-3 years. I had one for a while and sold it last year. They're definitely built like a tank.
