early start: November workout challenge thread.

Good job. Sounds like you are being pretty sensible about it also.

I think many people are starting to see how bad the processed sugars and starches are. My family really cut back on both of these a few years back and I it does make a difference.

Keep it up.

Wow.

I'm considering kettlebells as well. I've got some fillable weights, similar in form and function to kettle bells, but I'm at the end of their weight spectrum (I guess I could fill them with lead, but that would be more money for the lead than for kettle bells, getting kettle bells leaves the lighter fillable ones for our daughter and for those occasions you want lighter weight).

So they weigh short of 5 kilograms each, and I think of getting the 8 kg kettleball or a pair of them ...

On the other hand ... I've gone from water to sand with water within two weeks ... so I'm a bit torn between 8 and 12 ...
I don't have a device for pull-ups yet, but I'm also only at 5 full push ups, but doing shorter ones (knee as pivot point) nicely. I guess I'll be physically able to start pull up training some time in December.

I spent a few days with 8-10kg kettlebells I bought for seirra while wiating for mine to come in, we now have (because of the kids) everything from 2.25kg on up to 16kg. I'm using a 16 and an 8 stacked for presses, but I really need to order a 24, 28, and 32.

The general advice you get online is women get an 8 and a 12, men get a 16 (sometimes a 12 and a 16, sometimes a 16 and a 24)

I like having the 8kg around for stacking, but honestly can't imagine working out with it. Koyote Girls uses it about half the time, though

You're kickin' butt. You look to be the right age for getting it done. A few more years and the metabolism goes to hell.
It's hard but once you are in the groove it becomes routine.

When I moved down here in 2005 I was a 44 waist and about 255.I'm 6/2.
Within about 6 months I was at 215 and then I started guiding with a pack on several days a week.
I'm 200 now with a 36 inch waist.
Diet is everything. These folks down here don't drink soda pop and hardly eat any bread.
Lotsa rice and beans, a huge amount and variety of fruits, veggies and root vegetables like yuca, malanga and sweet potatoes. They barely any meat, but I am a serious carnivore and grow my own chickens and rabbits and raise 3 types of fish and blue crayfish.Everything is either baked or grilled.Where I used to eat a lb of meat, often fried, at every dinner now I eat 4 to 6 ounces.

My brother did the Atkins deal and that worked well for him. I guess it's all a matter of.....God I hate this word " Change"::D

Stick to it for ever and you'll enjoy being a tough old fart.:)

I tried a pure atkins and it's.....variable. I'm considering going back into induction phase for a few weeks when things shift here.

But I'm really working on a more paleolithic approach. Right now it's very tough. I'm chief cook by default for a household of 9 people in 2.5 families and we have various needs- from Sierra who needs to pack on 5 pounds of muscle mass, to me who needs to drop another 20 of fat- Jess needs to pull down about 40 and add 5 of muscle. We have an autie in the house as well, and various other dietary restrictions- so there's no wheat being used, limited amounts of corn flour, and sugar is....tough. My kids and Jess eat it, but everyone else is off of it.

Makes the diet tough to handle!

lots of working out ...lots of working out.

Good choice Koyote! I think your better off going with a caveman diet approach. I'm not so sure the Adkins Diet is great for your body, it's just not natural. It's not something you would want to do for extended periods of time. Avoid synthetic ingredients, preservatives, and sugars. Eat things like nuts, fruits, vegetables, and grilled lean meats like chicken and salmon. It's much healthier.

When I took that approach I noticed all kinds of positive effects on my health.

well, the classic old style 1970's Atkins wasn't so unnatural. Oh, there were a few things in there for treats that were a bit odd, but it was a cheese omelette, grilled meat and salad diet. The induction phase is a bit odd, but your body is capable of going into it for a reason......

I may even write up a 'all natural' atkins style plan. SOme of us really do process carbs poorly after years of abuse. Some people adapt to twinkies, some don't

just got finished two hours of workin out, 45 minutes cardio and the rest is split between Javerok's barbell and dumbell complexes and 200 crunches and 50 leg raises.. I have been doing this three days a week, and light dumbell complexes in between, aswell as yoga everynight.
I am noticing some nice new lines in my arm, wifes not complainning

thanksgiving was tough, I was good though, still no meat, and no sweets,
My family doesn't really get me being a vegatarian, they are still use to me eating more meat and gravy than anything else . But my mother has agree to at least listen to me when it comes to food after seeing the results I got from just diet change alone, so no more buttering the bacon for Ma...

down to 264.....from 318 in january.... at least 30 more to go..

nice thing is that I am in school to be a physiotherapist assistant and we are learning all the good things to ease the aches and pain of working out, the other day had Hot packs on my lats, ice on my shoulders and TENS on my calves, and got a full theraputic stretch....life's rough:D

Kristoff, I am looking into getting some of those kettlebells, I like the complexes I have seen with those, I am a huge fan of the combination of cardio endurance and muscular endurance, if I had room I would be doing full out metabolic workouts, UFC style stuff.

keep it up guys,

December thread isn't going yet, so I'll tag on the end of November.

Going into Thanksgiving Holiday...down 35# from original post. From 245 to 210 this morning.

Congratulation and good job. Remember it's not what you eat as much as how much. All things in moderation. Try not to worry a lot about your weight but how you carry it.

I haven't really done any serious work outs yet, I'm a mess with breaking my neck and back, falling 6 stories, then falling again working construction, a couple of motorcycle accidents, not entirely my fault, a bad car crash, that was entirely my fault.

But I did spend 6 days hunting in northern TN a couple of weeks back and must have walked 6 to 8 miles a day up and down hills.

Still, the last step on the scales said 207 down from 264 and I just bought my first jeans in 36" waist for the first time in 25 years :)

I feel good, I eat pretty much anything I want, I just make choices and control portions, I started baking my sourdough bread again but I have to freeze most of it or it will go bad before I can consume it. A couple of slices every other day or so for a sandwich ain't killing me.

So I'm in charge of some kind of desert for the families Thanksgiving dinner, I've been working on my chocolate skills, mixing and tempering and have come up with this fairly good mixture of bittersweet dark chocolate @ 70% with a bit of 100% cocao powder, cinnamon, vanilla and chili powder, I'll bake up some oatmeal raisin cookies drizzle the dark chocolate mixture on top and sprinkle with grated white chocolate, to look like snow and call them "Snowtmeal Cookies" the pleasure for me will be watching the family, a gathering of 20, eat them. I have a fairly wide evil streak :)

Happy Thanksgiving you all, and for our friends that don't celebrate this US custom take a few minutes to count your blessings and feel some gratitude.

Well, this has been a good month for me so far. As of this morning I'm down to 191lbs, about this time last month I was about 200lbs, So I've lost almost 10lbs this month!

Not quite the same results as koyote, but I'm pretty happy with it. I feel better, look better, it's great. Now I've just got 10 more pounds to lose and I'll be at my goal. Not sure if I'll be able to do it in a month though with these holidays coming up, but we'll see.

My daily excersice routine so far has been, push ups, sit ups, curls, back scratchers, and one arm dumbbell snatches every morning. If I'm not gonna ride my bike that day, I'll also do Kettlebell swings(but with a dumbbell).

But, I think what has really helped the most, is I've been riding my mountain bike a lot more. I try to ride 2-3 times a week, and my standby ride is 12 miles round trip with a 4 mile, 1,000 foot climb in the middle. Unfortunately, my fork needs rebuilt, which is gonna cost me $200 that I don't have, so I'm not gonna be able to ride the bike for the foreseeable future, until I can figure out what I'm gonna do. Oh well, I'll just have to keep my calories down until I can get my bike going again...

Along with my exercise routine, I've cut my daily calorie intake down to 1,000 calories if I don't ride my bike, or about 1,500 if I do ride. I don't really watch what I eat too strictly on the weekends, I just try to keep the portions smaller. Once I get down to my 180lb goal though, I'll probably increase my diet to 1,500 and 2,000 calories respectively.

When is this competition going to again? January? Hopefully I'll be down to my goal well before then. Thanks again for the competition Jake, it has really helped motivate me to get back into shape and be more active.

New thread for December.....Im thinking about extending it a few months to end in the spring to compinsate for the holidays.... Not sure yet.

Good job Nick!! Ill be out your way again in March. Look forward to seein ya again!

Diet is part of it- I and completely grain and sugar free except ....beer. And this next 28 days I'm doign zero beer to see if I can blast another 2 or 3 inches off the gut.

Awesome. I had to transition from pure paleo to paleo for athletes, which allows some grains before/after exercise. My protein and complex carb intake was seriously lacking once I started running and weight training. I'm using the Beverly International UMP protein shake that Nick recommends; it tastes good with just water, and doesn't upset my stomach like the others I've tried. It's also not 300 calories/serving like some of that crap out there. I also take an iron supplement because I'm now anemic..isn't that for prego chicks?:jerkit:

Anyway, good job. It's a good feeling to be fitting into or almost fitting into your natural size clothes.

mmm, lots of comments- I think that quantity and quality both matter- I know the basic rule of eat less, but what you eat- especially when working on increasing strength and stamina, matter as much.

One problem I have had is getting enough protein (without supplements, I'm not always good with processed foods)- without overdoing fat content. The foreman grill has helped with that.

I sometimes think I need to increase my complex carbs, but for me that means remembering to eat more salad! (salads around here have random mixed veggies included)

worrying more about how you carry your weight that what you weigh .... at a certain point, that's true. at 240 pounds? not so much. at 185? yeah. That's my target weight to start relying on a tape more than a scale. not so far to go....

I'd like to get the scale to read 190 or below by Yule. Not terribly hard, but I get stuck often and have to make changes to workouts and redial the diet.

Was there a December Thread? I never found one so BTTT for those of us needing the motivation.
