Easy to buy drop knife

Thanks for the ideas.

A bit of clarification, I'm going there with my father, he's moved away from the city a few years ago and we're flying there together to clean out this last bit of his belongings. That's why I can't send him a knife or use something he may have.

I'm not thrilled with the box cutter idea because I carry a knife every day for normal tasks and I can't see wanting to carry a box cutter. While it could excel at the task in the storage unit, it would fall short in other daily activities.

I like the idea of going to get an inexpensive SAK when I arrive and the leaving it as a gift to world--perhaps leaving it in the hotel room for a cleaning person to take. I'm certainly not giving it to the TSA.
 
Just saying the sog key knife has been on my dads key chain for at least 20 flights just sayin


There may be a forum member were you are who wouldn't mind lending you a knife were are you stayin?

If not I'd just buy a SAK.
 
Ozark trail knife, dollar store 2 sided stone. Presto... cheap, sharp knife. Give both away when you leave, leave with your tip for the chamber maid, I have done it before...

Utility knife that is a small frame lock with a pocket clip.

Uses any standard utility knife blade. (Gets dull you put a new one in)

Under $20.
 
:thumbup: I have one of these and it's my go-to when I fly. Pretty easy to find utility knife blades for it in most any drug store or grocery store. :thumbup:

I have a Stanley utility knife (the one with the bright green metal handles) for when I'm going to be breaking down considerable amounts of cardboard for the recycle bin. If you get a utility knife, it would probably be easier to give it away to someone afterwards. More people carry and use utility knives on the job than pocket knives. Mine only cost me like $6 at Home Depot, and it works very well.

BTW:
I'm not afraid to use my knives, including my CRK, even for boxes. However, if I have a large amount of thick cardboard I need to cut up, and quickly, IMO it only makes sense to use the utility knife/box cutter. I have no qualms about it.

The problem with a box cutter is that he may be going there because of some work that he needs to do, but he's not gonna stop being a knife person, and knife people carry actual knives.
While the box cutter will be perfect for the task at hand, it won't be the same as an actual edc knife.
A good option that nobody mentioned is those havlon type knives that use scalpel blades, because they act and feel like a regular folding knives but you can do the same as you could with a utility knife ( bring without a blade and buy one when you get there )

Inexpensive and M2 steel ran to 61hrc.
While it is a little soft for M2, it will hold and edge just fine and I am sure you will want it mailed back, though your pops would probably like to keep it around too.

I would second an opinel, a joy to use imo and no worries if it breaks or gets lost/confiscated
 
Although I recommended a box cutter, the OP has said (in post #42) that he wants a regular knife for other daily activities. Makes perfect sense to me. Who in this thread, if you were going on a trip somewhere, wouldn't want a real pocketknife of some kind. Or would you be satisfied with just a cheap box cutter for the duration of your trip.

If a box cutter were enough to satisfy the average knife-guy and fill all of his needs, this forum wouldn't exist. Maybe we'd all be members of a box-cutter forum. ;)
 
Go to the local thrift store when you arrive and buy a gently used kitchen knife. It never hurts to have more than one set of prints on a blade...
