As Traditional regulars will know, I bumped into some Vikings the other week (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...d’s-Quest-Part-10-Vikings-and-Thieving-Varlet ). For the most part they were a rather smelly-looking lot, ‘sword fodder’ some might call them. They were around for a long time though were the Vikings, and after going ‘on the rob’ all over Northern Europe, they done alright for themselves and sent plenty of coin back home. With all this filthy lucre crossing the North Sea, it wasn’t long before it started getting a bit gentrified back in Viking Land, and you had the emergence of the middle classes. Now your posh Vikings, the ones back home counting the loot, started cutting their hair a bit, and having airs and graces. They didn’t want to get lumped in with the lot who were doing all the pillaging and robbing and the like. When they went down to their local steak house, they didn’t want people thinking they were uncouth like the smellies, who whipped out ‘Brainbiter’ or ‘Pityless’ to carve up their meat. So the toffs commissioned a smith, who was most probably called Olaf, to go off and design them a bit of proper flash cutlery, with nice pictures on and that. Here’s an example I found in an ancient treasure trove last week, a gift-boxed Royal Viking steak knife, with a cast pewter handle.

I’ll be getting on with my Quest soon, and also as my post count reaches ten Large, I’ll be doing a giveaway. In the meantime though, here’s a bit of fun for anyone who fancies it. The prize is this fancy bit of Viking cutlery (or letter-opener), which you can read about online if you like. It’s open to all our regular members, anywhere. Please post your best Viking battle-cry, post as many comments as you like, and I’ll pick a winner in a week or two.

I’m off to eat my pancakes!

All the best

Jack

That's cool. I have the matching corkscrew.

That sounds pretty good! :D

I'd never seen any of these before, I didn't think they were rare, but didn't think they were 'common as muck' either! :D ;)

"'Ave the spam, eggs, sausage and spam. It's not got much spam in it!"

Lots of fun already, Jack, I'll play. :D

Ha ha ha. This should be fun!

That's quite an interesting looking knife. I'd say unique....but perhaps not ay ;)

I've got nothing to add, so I'll not enter, but I shall enjoy reading the silliness to mark your looming landmark!

Good luck all.

My personal was always "aghhhhhhhhhh!!" With my hair flowing behind me (before I cut 18" off last year-sad), eyes wild and my boss telling me who to kill!!

Now to be serious. The raiders were, in fact, the self same poets and aristocracy that would use such genteel cutlery! My ancestors were hated not only because we were such incredible warriors, but also because of how darned handsome we were! Big broad shoulders, combed hair daily, and bathed weekly. Brits didn't stand a chance against the Viking charm!, we had it all!
Look at this modern interpretation- perfect!! :p

So I guess another type of Viking battle call was:
"Hey, baby, how are you doing tonight? Can I get you some mead?" I'm thinking now, maybe that line led to a few battle cries, so I guess it is a precursor battle cry!!

Jack, beautiful knife. I thought you went home empty handed? Well I'm way to old for battle cry's but I've got a steak that would just love to "meat" that knife :D!

My Wife walked in while I was having my little photo shoot with the VCS (that's Viking Cereal Spoon) and gave me that look that tells me that she thinks I have totally lost what little sanity I had left. I began to explain by telling her about the Wizards Quest and the marching Vikings. Well, that pretty much did it. She is convinced that I am totally bonkers!:D

Indeed they were my friend. Please read the first paragraph of my opening post in a Ray Winstone accent and take it with a large pinch of salt! :D  By one of life's many strange coincidence, as I was uploading the pics, the BBC radio had a feature about this very issue! Great post BTW

LOL! That is hilarious! :D I think we've probably all been there! :D

That's a great spoon! :)

Thanks Bob :) I have another Quest episode I need to write up ;)

I have a good mate who would love that knife. He is a member of Wollongong Vikings RUFC.
I can see that I will have to go the full Ragnar here.
Prepare for battle.
The feasting hall of Odin awaits you.
Stayeth tuned.
Calls out -"Sweetie! Where dja put me axe?"
Royal Viking-that sounds familiar. Were they a cruise line?

Great thread folks!.....just sitting here cracking up.

Thanks,
Peter
