Anyone try it?

I have some serious issues with killing and NOT utilizing every part of the animal ('cept the entrails, Crows gotta eat too) but there is a Coyote that keeps baiting my dogs to wander off so it might be time to lay into him.

sometimes we have to kill for reasons other than food. protecting your animals is one of those reasons. take the skin, claws, and teeth. leave the rest for the crows. they gotta eat too. ;)

I once watched a group of coyotes run a full size German Shepard down. The group of coyotes traded off, running the dog in stages until it was so tired, they could easily move in for the kill. Act now, before it is to late!

Never heard of anyone eating one. I understand that Fox meat is absolutely one of the worst meats to eat. I wonder if they may be similar.

Yeah, I am really starting to think this is one example of my own morals conflicting with the safety of my dogs, morals are probably gonna lose this one. It's tough to think of eating something that is such close kin to dog on the evolutionary scale.

Dog is delicious. The Lewis and Clark expedition even prefered it over Elk.

The Sioux Indians ate dog regularly and it was a prefered meat to them.

Not to mention many different oriental cultural groups.

However Coyote is VILE. The Sioux report it gets its revenge from within. Lewis & Clark reported that it made the men who ate it so sick it was like it was fighting its way back out.

I've eaten dog many times with no bad results (it tastes similar to lamb or mutton). I haven't tried Coyote because I try to learn from the mistakes of others. I have never eread of a single account of anyone eating Coyote and having a pleasant experience.

Why are morals "gonna lose here"? If you don't protect your dogs, maybe your morals lose. I don't see a moral issue at all.

I think your ideals are admirable. If every hunter thought like you did I think our forests and larders would be richer for it.

You say you own a dog? Why not kill the coyote and, if you don't want to eat it, cube up the meat, stew it and feed it to your pup over the next few weeks? It'll cut down on dog food costs and the little guy will get revenge on that coyote bastard, preemptive as it may be. :D And better yet, none of it will go to waste. Win-win!

Well, I like to hunt, (Boar and Rabbit mostly) but it's a dilemma for me because I always eat what is killed. This is one time, I'll have to take a pass on that, and just do it for the safety of my animals.

That's why I asked the original question, I want to learn from what others have already done, no sense in reinventing the wheel on this particular issue.

Suspects in question...doing what they usually do...

Thanks, I like the idea of cubing it up.

Cap 'em. Don't eat 'em. I do not like senseless killing. I was raised to eat what I kill and make the most from the harvest. I also say a prayer and thank you over my harvest as well. I have the highest respect for life, but in my mind there are 3 reasons to kill, food, protection of self, and protection of others. Do what you must to protect yours. Moose

never ate it, but throw him in the oven with onions, carrots, and potatoes. i bet it will be DOGGONE (coyote gone) good

I didn't know coyotes will make you sick. I thought they'd be just like dog meat since they're all canines. I say kill the coyote and feed it to your dogs. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Their arent that many coyotes running around that you have to worry about them. Leave them (( inappropriate )) alone.

As to the guy saying coyotes killing a german shepherd, I know of a german shepherd that tore a coyote into 3 pieces. A coyote is a small dog with a really small mouth, they eat rabbits etc.

I live out in the mountains and recently heard a conversation that went similarly in a local shop. The proprietor of the shop made a similar argument against killing them to protect livestock (cows in this instance). He believed there are plenty of cows and coyotes should be protected as there are not a lot of them comparatively. Personally though I agree with the others, if I see one close enough to my house to be a threat to my dog or cats (rabbit sized animals) I would probably have to shoot it.

On a side note, I recently saw a mountain lion in my area. Fortunately for him I did not have the rifle on me. Funny thing about the mountain lion, the local game industry folks deny they exist in my neck of the woods, say they were wiped out. I would hate to kill something that is that close to extinct in the area, but they have been known to attack children in addition to small animals and there is a serious dilemma.

Coyotes hunting is a lot of fun. It is growing in popularity at a rapid rate. There are tons of them in my area. Too many...
