Eating Coyote

Suspects in question...doing what they usually do...

Thanks, I like the idea of cubing it up.

after seeing the photos i say kill the coyotes. then let them rot

1. don't mess with my truck
2. don't mess with my daughter
3. don't mess with my dog

Never heard of anyone eating one. I understand that Fox meat is absolutely one of the worst meats to eat. I wonder if they may be similar.

in terms of outright stench, fox meat is nasty, nasty stuff. it's even worse than the stench of cat meat.

i would have to be seriously, desperatly hungry to eat either. but i have no problem with sticking an arrow through as many of them as i can, coz hey, the wedge tailed eagles gotta eat too.......

?? did you get pics or take pics of his tracks, scat or the animal itself?? this is where i think most folks are full of poo when it comes to this. if you see a mtn lion. you need to have proof that he/she was even there. i have heard many tales of folks seeing mtn lions but they have nothing to back it up therefore = poo statement. how about go find some evidence. also a lot of folks mistake bobcats and etc from a distance with mtn lions.. sounds foolish i know but it does happen.

keep in mind i am not trying to negate what you think you saw but having proof would set this whole "are mtn lions gone in the east?" crap to rest. also there is a mtn lion thread somwhere around. we were posting on it last week or so. find it and post what you saw there please so we can discuss it

sorry to get off subject here.

I was in the car on my road about 2 miles from my house (not a well traveled road). Tan cat about the size of my 75 pound dog, no spots and matches all the pictures I can find of mountain lions. I did not have a camera, or weapons other than a knife. He (or she) took maybe 5 steps along the road before deciding it was time to bolt into the woods. So no pictures, and being unarmed I did not feel the urge to follow it into the woods and look for its tracks or turds. If I see it again and have my camera handy, or a gun, I will be happy to send some definitive proof. I imagine I wouldn't get in to much trouble for sniping one, since they don't exist here and all...

I've seen a mountain lion exactly one time. I was very young and totally naive to the fact that they are supposed to be extinct on the upper east coast. In fact, I had simply told my father that I saw a 'huge kitty' in our back yard. After about a half-hour of questioning, he told me that it was a mountain lion I had seen and showed me a picture. I confirmed that the cat he showed me was the same kind I had seen in our back yard and he believed me. After that, I was not allowed to venture as far into the woods as normal and had to be indoors by 5pm. I still remember that cat, plain as day. I lived due south of 223 Beecher Lake Road
Livingston Manor, NY 12758 at the intersection of Beecher Lake Rd and Beaverkill Rd. (google map the above ddress).

I may sound like a Bigfoot eye-witness but I saw that cat.

Edit: It sorta reminds me of when I lived in Berlin, Ma and local police swore for half a decade that we didn't have coyotes in town....

Their arent that many coyotes running around that you have to worry about them. Leave them (( inappropriate )) alone.

As to the guy saying coyotes killing a german shepherd, I know of a german shepherd that tore a coyote into 3 pieces. A coyote is a small dog with a really small mouth, they eat rabbits etc.

I'm beating a dead horse here but there are sizable populations of coyotes in most states.
Coyotes are not all one size. They can breed with domestic dogs (coydog) and wolves.
Where I live, where I hike and the local roads I travel on give me many sightings and many of these have been the size of a young adult German Shepard.
In a pack they are capable of taking down a human. They'll eat anything they can readily kill.

i wont eat coyote just like i wont eat a ground squirrel, jack rabbit or rat, they are over populated pests and carry diseases. farmers used to pay me to shoot all of those and they definately didnt want to eat them either. remember, the vultures gota eat too.

I know what you mean, the only people that agree with me about the Lion around here is the Game Warden and my crazy, Willie Nelson in the nude Karaoke-ing neighbor up the road. Our cat is fully grown and probably 7 feet nose to tail. I drove down the driveway at about 3am going to work and there it was crossing in front of my truck. The sightings have been piecemeal at best, I saw it twice, once again in a drainage pipe at dawn down the road while walking the dogs. The second time was packed with a feeling of wonder and dread, but it just turned and walked through to the other side. I saw the game warden about two years ago and he confirmed that there was one that wandered this area, too many empty homes and feral animals from the economy exodus (housing market downturn)...sorry no pics, I carry my camera more now, but, geeking up to get a pic of a mountain lion is like taking a baseball mitt to a football game to catch a foul ball. :D

The coyotes we have around here (north west fl) are considerably bigger. 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder.

I'm sorry for my silly jokes through this thread.

I think the OP asked a valid and honest question, but one that could sadly be open to ridicule from some quarters.

I personally know Welsh hill farmers who keep sheep, they'll shoot foxes on site because during lambing season they'll lose some.

I know of small holders who'll shoot foxes who've started taking chickens.

I accept this and it's OK.

The last thing I shot was a young magpie, it was at the open door of my sister's chicken coop. She's had eggs broken and eaten because of magpies and squirrels.

The only "pleasure" that I took from killing it was that it died almost instantly from a shot to the neck from my air rifle, we fed the bird to my sister's ferrets.

Living in the UK where we've made extinct so many animals, I find it very sad that people would want to shoot something like a mountain lion in order to prove its existence in their state. It's rather like the "great" Victorian era hunters, bringing back the skins of rare animals yet pushing the species closer to oblivion....

I'm of the opinion if you swim in waters where sharks (jellyfish, or even riptides) are known to be, then take whatever precautions are necessary but also accept the consequences of getting in the water.

Aparently coyote jerky isn't too bad, check out this thread from a local forum:

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=288208&highlight=jerky

Kind of got me wanting to try it.
I unknowingly had cougar jerky once. Wasn't terrible, although it seemed a little stringy. With enough seasoning and spices you could probably make a tire not to bad. Although,It would steal be a little rubbery. I got to thinking about this thread and my opinion is this(i did reply earlier also). If it is a lone coyote on the small side, It may be looking just to socialize. Sometimes a pup will get kicked out of the pack and be kinda lost for awhile. A lone coyote usually isn't to dangerous unless there sick or wounded. I've seen younger, loner coyotes trie to play with our dogs out in the fields. In fact one old girl(our dog) hit one going about thirty and really knocked it for a loop. It was very funny. To keep your dogs safe I wouldn't risk it.

I agree. I was walking my shepard/lab mix and a coyote wondered up behind us. My shepard thought it was another dog, ran up to him, bit the scruff of his neck and tossed him. I don't think the shepard realized how light the coyote was. Short of a really small dog or a puppy, coyotes aren't going to prey on domesticated K9's. They also don't normally hunt in packs like wolves do.

I like everybodies opinion, but coyotes do hunt in packs. Sometimes a loner may go mousing or looking for other small animals, but as a hole(not butthole) they stay in packs so they can take down larger animals like deer. In a pack, and if your dog is alone and away they may tear it to mince meat. Especially at night. At night when you hear a group of them together yipping and calling they are usually on the hunt or have killed something. They are very organized.

I saw a coyote walking thru my neighbors yard early one morning a couple of years ago. We are in a suburb of B'ham AL
