why do anybody buy off of ebay for there knifes?? post after post I see that they got ripped off or the knife that they are looking at they are asking is it a fake. I am just wondering why deal with them in the first place? I see alot of good dealers here on this site so why not give them the sale instead ??

I buy primarily off of ebay because thats where I find the best prices. I have bought zillions of knives off of ebay without a single issue, because I buy from respected sellers with tons good feedback. I spread the love around, though, and buy plenty from BF affiliated dealers too, and they are great. But one can buy from ebay with a high degree of confidence if you stick to the right sellers. Additionally, people generally don't start threads on BF about their good experiences on ebay. You generally only hear about the bad ones, so they may seem more prevalent than they really are. JMO.

the 2 obvious answers are (1)they are usually the cheapest, sometimes by more than $100. (2)they have rare/discontinued models that are no longer available from dealers. ebay is a perfectly safe place to buy knives (or anything else) if you know what to look for. mainly, don't buy anything that ships from China, and don't buy from people with poor or little feedback.

problem solved.

I buy a lot of knives and other stuff from ebay without any problems. I thnk the problem people may run into besides what Powernoodle said is jumping on the "too good to be true" bus and gambling you will beat the house... Nobody beats the house.

I've bought quite a few knives on there and have had only excellent experiences.

As with any transaction, one should is to look at the information that's available when considering where to take their business . In the case of eBay it's feedback, in the case of other non-eBay sellers the GBU forum here -- to see if there's any history of poor service or questionable business practices. As far as fakes, the main thing there is simply to use common sense: if you see a "Strider SMF", "Emerson Commander", "Darrel Ralph Custom Gunhammer", or some other well-known knife being sold for a tiny fraction of its normal cost, there's a good chance it's a fake. Outside of a handful of iconic knife models, wholesale fakes of extant knife models aren't as common as many people seem to fear. Much more common -- but also, thankfully, much easier to spot -- are cases in which somebody illegally slaps the name or logo of a well-known knife company on some Chinese or Pakistani knives that bear little or no resemblance to any model in that company's actual lineup.

EDIT: Looks like others made many of the same points as I was typing my reply.

I've bought almost all of my knives off of ebay. In around 120 ebay purchases (not just knives, but all kinds of crap), I have yet to be ripped off by a seller.

(knock on wood.)

The only time I ever purchse knives on Ebay is when I find something I really want at a good price. I haven't purchased a whole lot of knives on Ebay, but I've purchased a few hard to find knives there.

I buy a lot of knives from eBay, typically, current production knives or recently discontinued. I also buy Scandinavian knives, which I doubt is being counterfeited by anyone. Don't plan on stopping.

I stay away from Civil War Bowies and the impossible-to-find knives that are somehow sold out of China.

Never had any problems.

We have great taste in knives...Kershaw of course..(btw way offtopic I'm still searching for a Orange 1440)

well that makes 2 of us! i can't believe how hard that thing is to find, especially because i missed one that sold for less than $30 back in december. it was in rough condition and i assumed i could find another, but i really wish i had jumped on it now.

ok thank you for you answers. I check the this form on a regular time and I am seeing bad feedback about ebay and hey look another fake on ebay.

I've made over 200 purchases on ebay and have only had one conflict (wasn't a knife). Ebay took care of the problem.

I have made hundreds of purchases using Ebay... To say the least i have not been disappointed ...yet. It is how well you are at spotting a fake or how well the seller is at disguising one. All in all Richard i do agree with you. Knives specifically would be better sold/ purchased through out a knife involved community. Yet freedom of choice is what our country thrives on... and it will never change. Great ol' USA.

There are a handful of big vendors on ebay who have thousands of good feedbacks and a 100% - or very close - positive rating, who also consistently have the lowest prices. Stick with these vendors and you are golden. Buy from someone with a 97.2% rating and only few sales, and you are asking for trubba. Piece of cake.

I have gotten some deals off of Ebay. I don't really buy there any more. I will occasionally watch.

There have been some KILLER deals on knives I collect.

You have to know what you want, and what you are actually looking at before you bid.

I constantly laugh when I see the prices. I know the original price, and see the blade up for sale after the show for 4-6 times as much, as I know the seller bought it for the day before!

On the other side of the coin, I have seen more than one go for 1/4 of current market value more than once! (this usually involves a knife that is sold at the original purchase price, when the value has gone way up).
