Who uses ebay for knife shopping? If you do WHY? If you don't WHY? I do as well as alot of the MFG. websites and I cataloge shop. I never seem to find Quality Knives in stores or even at shows. I am really interested as to how the rest of the world shops for Good Knives! Thanks!!! ~baba~

I don't use E-Bay, and never will. That is just my preference. I have other places that I TRUST, and have been buying from for a long time.

I've bought knives from eBay. Some knives aren't available at regular retailers, whether brick and mortar or online--for example hard to find LE knives like the Benchmade 730CFHS.

Sometimes it's the price. Some ebay sellers will undercut other online sellers to sell their products. Some time ago, I was able to buy a Spyderco Dodo (before they were discontinued) for under $50.

I don't really shop eBay that often, but I've been pretty lucky so far, with fair dealings on all my knife purchases. I also buy only from U.S. dealers, because there's better chance for fixing a problem should one occur.

ebay use to be awesome with knives, full of good knives and great prices, even at the end of auctions you could get away with winning a knife for up to $20 less than a good online store price...but those days are over...with too many knife collectors online watchign ebay like a hawk now and days sometimes you see knives selling for more than they would cost ina store...plus I hate dealing with that snipping crap...Every now and then I will watch soemthign on ebay and at the last minute if I like the price I will bid, and if I win thats great but it doens't happen often...

There are 3 or 4 different online stores that I think have great prices, and great customer service...I usually go to these guys to buy up new knives at cheap prices...

When I am broke I trade with forum members!

But the best deals are usually from other members sellign their stuff...members on the forums USUALLY have the cheapest prices anywhere!!!!

I mostly buy from online stores, and some local chain stores, but there are a few eabyers that I have bought from with all good experiences so far....

I shop ebay as guy who likes Spyderco/CRKT/Kershaw/some Cold Steel and Benchmade. Sometimes you may find something from long ago that I might have owned or wanted to but now it is discontinued such as the Buck181 knives. Sometimes I stay up all night perusing knife makers websites and I have made purchases direct from a maker. In the little time I have been on forums I have read several negative remarks in regards to eBay and was wondering why. P/S what does SAK mean? Sorry I'm not used to being the FNG! L8R.. ~baba~

I've bought a handful of low/moderately priced knives off of eBay, some from private individuals and some from dealers using eBay as an online storefront. I've gotten a couple of good deals, gotten ripped off once (but ultimately made whole), you know, the typical eBay experience. All my knives are users - I don't "collect" knives - but if I were going to spend several hundred on a high end knife I would be much more confident dealing with the dealers/traders here on BF.

I buy all my knives on eBay, in England the dealers are way over priced and eBay makes them affordable. You do have to watch the prices from eBay dealers but it's fun and add to the enjoyment of collecting.
Some bargains still around, Al-Mar Osprey £22 from eBay, £100 ish from UK dealers.

I've bought 4 knives on ebay (Endura, Leek, Blur, Temperance) and all but the blur went smoothly.

My last two purchases (RSK and Raven) i bought on the forums here and I got a better deal then ebay prices and plus came away with a better feeling (plus no ebay fees). I imagine most of my future purchases will be on here.

I must admit that I like selling on ebay because people get into such a frenzy that they bid higher then retail. I've sold two pairs of grappling shorts (Sprawl) on ebay and the final bid price for each auction was higher then MSRP (and I even pointed out MSRP in my listing). The poor chaps that paid that price could have gone to an online store and gotten the same shorts for about $5 cheaper.

Ebay has saved me a ton of money---well other than buying more:rolleyes:

Saved $200 for a slip-on pipe for my Suzuki---no other retailer(online or local) would even come close----it came NEW-- sealed in the factory box.

On Spyderco's and Benchmade's I save at least $20 to $30 each---sometimes a lot more-------Buck's I buy local because they always seem to be discounted one way or the other.

The last SAK's I bought were at the local hardware store---they were running a 25% off sale during Father's Day week---nobody even came close to those prices.

Had one problem with an Ebay knife---seller listed it as NEW--I get it---and it is very USED---wound up getting the knife for free and all my money back---it was a Benchmade Mini-Grip.

Also---pay close attention to their shipping costs----sometimes the shipping is so high that a seemingly good deal is far from that.

Keep your eyes open---and you can get those deals here and there---and be patient.

Never pay full retail---for anything---I mean anything---well maybe food.

Damn --I'm a cheap bastard.

Ebay is ok for really weird stuff - my best deals have been there. Like logging tongs, a shingle froe, etc.

My automotive parts purchases, so so. I got merchandise, but either it was junk or misrepresented.

Power tools have been a total ripoff. No tool, no refund.

I am not about to start with knives . . . like he said, forum members sell cheaper. I know I have sold for less, but forum members have a lot to lose in a bad deal and can't hide like ebayers. It's the price I pay - and I have a better audience prequalified in interests.

It's the "collectors" on ebay driving prices up. The baby boomers are buying their youth they never had to show off to buddies.

I sure hope they bid up my Randall. :D :D :D

I have purchased MOST of my knives on Ebay. I have never been cheated on Ebay, but I only buy from sellers with 99% or better feedback. I can't see paying three times more from a retail store just to have the knife right then.

eBay is hit or miss with the good deals. I recently bought a knife from a seller with 1400+ positive feedback...

...3 months after I paid, I finally received it.

I have discovered the hard way recently myself that the number of the feedback means very little... it is the percentages that are important BUT only if one looks at the LATEST feedbacks AND their responses. If the seller just suddenly started getting a bunch of negatives run away. If they respond to the negatives in a very unprofessional manner... RUN FASTER.

I tend to go by "Never pay more for something on eBay than you're willing to throw away." That being said: All but one of my couple dozen purchases over the years has gone well. Then again: I'm very careful about from whom I'll buy.

As far as knives: Well, I guess if it was something I really wanted (like the Camillus CUDA EDC in 154CM ya can't get anywhere anymore), and it showed up on eBay, and the seller had a sterling reputation, and the product was right (NIB/LNIB), and the price was right (increasingly rare on eBay): I would probably go for it. Otherwise: I tend to go with established on-line retailers with good reputations (such as NGK). I would also probably buy from established BF members with good reputations before I would off eBay.

I have bought a bunch of knives on EBay, for 2 reasons:
1) A lot of what I want has been discontinued for years, and a net wide search only turns up threads where people once mentioned them and EBay listings.
2) It is 176 miles from my house to the nearest knife store with any kind of selection. The gas and half day of driving to get there and back really adds a bunch to the cost of a knife.

So far, I've had very good luck with my EBay purchases, but I'm pretty careful what I bid on, and what sellers I buy from. There are some very good dealers (and some very poor dealers as well) with EBay stores.

Here I Started this thread about ebay and I just won a Spyderco C36CFBGP (CarbonFiber ParaMilitary w/BG42)NIB. $120.00 + $4.00 Priorty shipping. I am Stoked!!!! I have had about 5 of theses slip away from me at the $170. to $180. mark. I have set a price of $150.00 each time and Now I got one. Patience has paid off! L8R... ~baba~
