I recently sold a Scrapyard doublecut Dumpster Mutt to Ed.

He sent a USPS Postal Money Order.

When I went to the post office, customer service representative Kim told me that she and her manager, Kurt, decided that it could not be cashed or redeemed.

They gave me two separate and unrelated reasons why it was not a valid money order, and had not been issued by a US Postal Office.

They kept the money order and refused to give me any written documentation that they took the money order from me.

I don't know where the problem came about, and I'm not accusing anyone. It could be a systemic problem at the AK 99557 or IL 61822 postal offices. I'm gathering data and evidence right now.

My honest advice is that the first thing you do ASAP is put a stop order/cancellation on it at your local post office.

Next, hopefully we can work this all out.

Thank you,

-jon

Jon,

I'd contact the postal inspectors office and at least get a copy of the MO. Two stories from 2 employees, with no receipt for your seized property, leaves me with a bad taste. The postal insprectors office can get you a straight answer and maybe uncork someone's head from their rear at the PO. Without a receipt, you have no proof that you ever even held the money order.

Gene,

That was my fear as well. I was in a hurry to get to class so I wasn't able to haggle with those folks.

I will go back this afternoon and see if I can get something in writing. Barring that, I will follow your advice to get Postal Inspector involved.

Thank you!

I'm pleased to inform everyone that this matter has been resolved.

It turns out my post office clerk was... shall we say... undercaffeinated at the time.

Ed,
Please accept my apologies (and the USPS's apologies, through me.)

For the record, the DCDM is on its way to her new home in AK. Please let me know when she gets in, whether you like her, and whether your post office has their coffee in the morning, unlike mine!!!

I hope there are no hard feelings.

Take care.

Good Thing they caught it. She almost lost your money with no record. You know she wouldn't have admitted to it when it was her mistake if she could get away with it.

When you go to the Post Office to get your cash and they process the MO immediately ask; "where is the other MO for $XXX"

That will make them sit up and think about giving you a reciept in the future!!
Not only did she have the machine on the wrong setting, she lost the second MO:eek::eek::D

Alls well that ends well.................who said that first??

Jon,

Thank you for the apology after calling my character and integrity into question on this forum. I for one would like to know what two separate and unrelated reasons the clerk and her supervisor gave for questioning their money order as being counterfeit, and not issued by the Post Office. As a member of this forum, and the general public, I have to admit that I'm curious what specifically I should be looking for the next time the Post Office clerk removes money orders from a stack, and runs them through their printer? Are there specific characteristics; holographs; security strips; printing only visible under black light, etc?

Anyway, I'm glad the issue was resolved to everyone's satisfaction. All's well that end's well. Just remember, all that any of us on this forum has is our reputation, and trust in one another....right?

Regards,
Ed

Ed,

It was my fault for not giving "the system" more time to work itself out. I also should have contacted you directly.

I myself have been the victim of a PayPal chargeback scam (the lesson learned: only accept PayPal from a "confirmed" address) so I have been particularly sour and/or cautious.

Second, there has been a rash of fake USPS Money Orders lately -- a friend of mine on a different forum was hit by one by depositing it in his bank account instead of at the post office. The problem with this method is that the bank does not confirm the validity of the USPS money order and both the depositor and the bank will not find out for up to a week.

The moral here is to always take it directly to the post office and have it cashed immediately, but don't necessarily trust the post office!!

I will email you directly about the indicators so as to make it less public. Although I am no fan of "security through obscurity", the slower we release this information to the public, the slower they will be overcome.

As always, anything one man can make, another can unmake. One only tries to stay one step ahead of the curve, yes?

As for the knife, I think it is fully resolved. The DCDM is in the mail, and the post office indeed paid it up.

Let me know when she gets in and whether you are satisfied. As always, any deal is always reversable up until both parties are satisfied.

Finally, I do apologize again for the trouble. Your reference to the institution in this area, by the way, was the strongest indicator that made me try to be as neutral as possible.

Thank you again for understanding.

-Jon
