EDC $200 limit

sorry if this doesnt notify everyone! i just woke up and its really hard to answer everyone considering how many people replied. anyways, a lot of you who recommended a PM2 i already have one, i payed $120 for it new at a locally owned store. right now i think when i go to look im going to look at all of them rather than just the benchmade, i saw a couple ZT's last night that i really like the look of. havent gotten my hands on to any of them yet though.

id be more opening packages sometimes cutting carpet/drywall stuff like that.

id plan to carry it in either pocket, doesnt really matter. and my phone or my wallet will usually be in the same pocket

well, right now i have a PM2 and it is kinda large but doesnt bother me much i just dont like anything really small. deployment method i dont care about very much either, just something fun to fidget with aswell.

i have average to large size hands, no issue really.

and i live in tennessee so theyre pretty good on knife laws

Can't recommend the 940 enough, it is a classic and won't disappoint you. However, any of the knives recommended so far will make you happy. I would suggest looking at the Benchmade, Spyderco, and ZT catalogs and finding what suits you best in your price range. You should be happy with what you might get from any of those three companies.

thank you for your opinion! im going to a gun store tonight, i know they have benchmade but i dont know about spyderco or ZT. i will go out to the barret gun store sometime soon again hopefully. i know they have spyderco and benchmade at fair prices so maybe ill get something there.

940-1501 knifeworks exclusive flips like dream no blade play whatsoever. ZT0562 G10 version right at $200 a bit heavier but arguably among the best ZT ever produced.

Based on the need to cut drywall, I'm thinking something more like a griptilian. I'm not sure how comfortable a 940 would feel if you have to cut too much of that type of material. The mini-grip would certainly get fatiguing in a hand larger than a medium glove size I think. Drywall makes me want to recommend a spyderco just because the ergos are nicer and I feel like drywall can get a little rough on the hands with a smaller handle. I've always used a box cutter for such a task so I can use a thin blade and then just throw it away when it's too dull to use. A spyderco chaparal comes to mind specifically as it has the thinner blade to reduce drag from the drywall.

Then again, if it's only a small amount and not an entire projects worth, like an entire basement, then it's probably not a big deal to use whatever you have.

I consider the 940 a perfect "hard-use" gentleman's folder, in that it looks gorgeous but can withstand a fair amount of harder cutting tasks you may not normally use a gentleman's folder for. I also find it my favorite benchmade to flick lately and it's usually what I carry around the house as it's not a hindrance when laying on the couch or anywhere else in the house. It's never really in the way like larger knives can get. The only knife I've had that disappears better is a spyderco dragonfly (clips are a requirement for me so traditions and SAKs don't count).

its not gonna be a whole project, only every once and a while. i also want it for collection starting purposes.

I like how light my 940-1 is and it carries great, but for my EDC needs I don't find the blade shape very functional compared to many other knives. It is one of the funner knives to fidget/flip though. ZT0450 someone mentioned is a great recommendation, but my advice is handle as many as you can first so you can decide for yourself what works best.

In the 94x family the 943 is also a great option with a more delicate tip it fits well all EDC tasks
The ZT450 is a very similar options in size and weight. It is great if you like flippers
PM2 is larger but offers lot of options in steel/color. Very good EDC if the size is not an issue

so, i want to the store and they didnt have the original 940. only the 940-2 and they wanted $235 for it so i didnt pull the trigger. they didnt have any other brands though, trying to find other knife places around me

Buck 110
Buck 301 stockman
4 blade Camp/Scout/Utility knife or SAK

You can get all for well under $100, combined.

I own and carry the zt 0450cf and had the Benchmade 940 until it got stolen. They carry the same. I prefer the ZT for what you get for the price (still getting used to a committed flipper as far as taking out of pocket and deploying). The 940 was buttery smooth and a blast to use with the axis lock, but could not get over the easily scratched aluminum handles. ZT uses titanium and carbon fiber and s35vn vs s30v of the 940 which makes for a much better package for the price. I do think the axis lock was easier to manage with the small handles on these knives, vs the flipper framelock of the 0450cf. You just grab the 940 out of your pocket and deploy without thinking about it, the ZT you have to adjust your hand to be able to flip and im still not used to it.
