CPM-20CV steel, which I've got no experience with...

Mine is M390.
 
cpm-20cv is the same as m390.

Forget about amazon. Go to usamadeblade.com and take a look at various anodized zt0562cf.

I believe no extra $ needed for anodization at usamadeblade. Yeah I know the cf version is $40 over your budget limit. That is why initially I suggested the g10/Elmax version, which is not a bad choice at all. I have owned both and am thinking about buy another ZT0562cf.
 
the original version is definitely a contender with me. i love the look of it, plus ive seen videos with it im pretty sure and i remember it being very smooth

If you're in TN are you near Smokey Mountain Knife Works?

Oh and if you're going to be cutting/scoring drywall and cutting carpet I can tell you from personal experience that the manix 2 in S110v is awesome for that. Great ergos, and a steel that really holds up to those very abrasive cutting mediums.

i just checked, im about 3.5 hours from there. would be a lengthy drive for a knife. but may wait to go for the experience and maybe buy it there? how are their prices? i never even knew they existed until now.

Another vote for the manix and para 2, or anything with a compression look. Super fun. And spydercos are great cutters.

Some knives you might want to take a look at in addition to the ones that have already been suggested...

Southern Grind Spider Monkey or Bad Monkey. The Bad Monkey breaks your budget a little bit but you can find them for just a little over $200.
Reate Horizon C or Hills. Again, the Horizon is a little over budget but can be found for close to $200
Kizer Yamakasi is a really cool looking knife. I don't have personal experience with it, but I've heard some good things.
Also from Kizer, take a look at the Ti Dukes, Nomad, Kala or Kane. Kizer makes a lot of great knives actually.
The full sized, G10 Benchmade Griptilian is great option.
Also from Benchmade, check out the 950 Rift.
The Freeman 451 BLF comes in at $200 in it's basic configuration.

well, i did it. your picture/suggestion is really what sold me. really hoping my dad likes the para 3 im surprising him with. this is his first ever non-ebay pocket knife. i know hes not a fan of huge otherwise i wouldve gotten him the P2
