I am a Maxpedition nut, but I found this leather fisherman's bag (marked "Holland hand made)on E-bay. It is kind of nice for a non-tactical look. It holds edc stuff (not necessarily PSK) that I like to have with me with plenty of room for a water bottle and camera, etc. I took a couple of pics so that I could play with new photobucket account. The bag seems real well put together, and it is leather (love leather!). Nice urban option IMHO... What do guys carry when you are not in the bush?

Maxpedition definitely makes you look like a mall ninja in most situations.

That looks like a European carryall. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

out of the bush right now i just carry what is in my pockets. on the way to and from school i have my bag of books and things, but that is somewhat specialized.

i hae been from one extreme to the other. at one point i carried nothing at all, most days even forgetting to put a knife in my pocket (pre-knife knut days). then somehow i ended up toting a fully loaded backpack everywhere with me stocked with all kinds of gear. looking back, it was a sort of ill prepared BOB. things like food, water, raingear, extra clothing, etc.

now i only gauranteed to be carrying my two EDC knives, my keys, my back pocket paper cake, handkerchief, sharpening stone, matches/lighter, lip balm.

if i have a jacket on, i normally have something like gloves and a balaclava in the pockets, and sometimes i toss extra stuff in there too.

i have been casually looking around though for a low-key small backpack for carrying some basic stuff like water and a snack and maybe some raingear if the weather looks bad. i like a backpack though because if i need to i can load it up heavy and still carry it comfortably and securely.

i do like shoulder sling bags like that one though, and am still searching for the perfect combination of pockets and materials. i am getting closer and closer to biting the bullet and just making the perfect one.

that bag looks good, i like the gear assortment you have in there. personally, i live in a suburb, so i don't spend alot of time away from a stash of resources except when hiking, and then i have my whole bag on me. when i do take day trips to the city though i normally have a shoulder bag with the things i mentioned above.

Nemoaz and Siguy,

I have been all over that spectrum too. I keep a BOB in the Jeep and also carry Maxpedition Jumbo that has a bunch of stuff in it. As Nemoaz pointed out, you can't really carry the Jumbo in some urban/professional settings comfortably... I also don't want anything to feminine either... I have looked at Mountainsmith packs as well, they and Filson make gear that fits into a lot of environments. The bottom line is that gear, (like weapons) are things that are hard to predict when you will need, so you really have to think about what you carry and when.

Thats cool. The leather is warm looking!

I've really been researching EDC bags lately. Been on the EDC forum everday, e-bags, Maxpedition, etc. I actually bought a Maxpedition Jumbo the other day and have been looking at the different messenger bags. I found several that I really like. However, this weekend I went back to a regular sling backpack. For some reason I just can't get around the idea of looking like I'm carrying a purse, albeit a man purse. Makes it even a little worse living in a small country town in Arkansas. Some of the messanger bags aren't too bad and would look ok going to the office but they look a little strange at the basketball games and such. My Maxpedition Jumbo really packed great and was compact but even with the military look was just too pursey for me. Now my backpack has everything from multi tool, paracord, and firestarter to my bible for Sunday go to meetin. I will say that e-bags has about every kind of bag you can find. I do like the looks of that leather bag though.

Man, that is nice little bag. It looks like you could pack a small Kimber .45 in there with no problem.:)

Andy,

Yep, it's nice leather. Sometimes you can just look at a bag or a briefcase and know it is of quality. I am guessing whoever orginally bought this bag probably paid a lot.

Triquetra,

Ditto. Love my Jumbo and Devil dog, the Jumbo travels everywhere with me (but stays in the car some places), and my devil dog goes in the woods. I am not a purse guy or mall ninja (OK maybe I'm 1/2 a mall ninja), so this bag is sophisticated enough to look OK in urban areas and is rugged enough that other guys don't hit on me (not that there is anytthing wong with that:D).

Mtrunner,

A lot of people seem to like those Timbuk2s , got any pics?

Troop,

Yep, plenty of room for a Kimber. You can see the Beretta fits well...

My wife like the Ameribag Heathy Back bags and they make a larger version that works perfect for a guy. It's big-- like a backpack. I found one in a thrift store for $3.99 :). Plenty of room for EDC, lunch, rain hat, etc. What makes it work is that it sits close to the body carried bandolier style and is easier to get through crowds, doors, buses, etc. I've used a backpack a lot and it just ends up slung over one shoulder anyway.

One thing that I look for in a commuter bag is an exterior water bottle holder so I don't risk getting my electronics wet. Besides, a full Nalgene makes a great sap on a bus  Muhahaha!

This is what I carry with me to work every day. Plenty of room for a couple Nalgene bottles, laptop, and other gear I often carry to work. It fits in whether I'm wearing jeans or a suit. It's been on few business trips in addition to my daily commute. I've had it for about four years and other than a slight fading of the color is in great shape. It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. I fully expect this bag to be with me for a long time. I'll tire of it long before it will give out on me.

DaleW,

That bag is the kinda thing I would like for an urban environment...

Lead Dog,

I've been looking at the Filson's for a while, they look real well made...

I use a Stonewashed Rothco Messenger Bag. It's an excellent, durable bag that has a real casual look that looks at home while walking around a college campus. It carries all the EDC supplies I need: water, multi-tool, folding knife, first aid supplies, hygiene supplies, GPS, etc. I can even carry an extra change of clothes (jeans, shirt, underwear, and socks), comfortably. Of course, I can also fit books and my laptop inside as well.

This isn't the stonewashed version but it should give you an idea of what it looks like.

Troop,

Tomcat .32 with nice shiny silvertips in it. I had Eagle industries re-grip it with the rosewood that you see.

Years ago, someone came out with a "Danish School Bag". Lots of room, casual on the outside, not divided up into a dozen tiny pockets, either. Then came the inevitable cheap clones, and now the design is a standard: you got it. :D

Another great choice for an unobtrusive bag that doesn't look like a purse and carries comfortably is a camera bag. You can usually customize the interior a bit, also. Lots of choice in size and color. I've seen camera-backpacks, too.

The way things are going, everything is going to make someone look like some type of poseur, wannabe or mall neenja.

Nice leather bag though! Very nice.

Molle + tactical colors = pretty high on the mall ninja scale :)

I'm not very "low profile" due to my size, build, and close cut hair usually. I'm the guy in the bank that you would identify as "probably packing a weapon". I do what I can to lessen my profile, but I simply don't look metrosexual. There are things that others can pull off that I cannot. Those canvas bags like timbuk2 or the canvas rothco bag, usually adorned with a Chairmen Mao or a red star, are pretty common and low profile IMHO.

Of course, I always have the urge to stab the guys carrying the Mao bags.......
