EDC Beater Knife, Watch, Flashlight??

Watch: Casio Solar Atomic G-shock Digital (want an analog, but $$$)
I can get the CO signal in upstate NY and a full charge lasts for more than a month without the sun (Took it to 78 deg. north for a month in January last year).

Knife: Spyderco CalyJr. and/or SAK Farmer (Plus multi in bag)

Flashlight: Arc AAA! Plus Dorcy 1 Watt 3AAA Luxeon (nice and cheap) in bag for more light/throw when needed.

I currently carry a Citizen Titanium Chronograph. It's very lightweight and good looking for EDC or formal.

My EDC knife is a benchmade 710HSSR. The M2 steel isn't hard to keep sharp if you stay on it. I highly recomment a 20 degree angle if you truly use this as your utility knife. I also give high points to my 806SD2 AFCK. There aren't many knives out there that fit my hand just right and these two are top notch.

My EDC flashlight is a Streamlight baton light which I use as a keychain. I can't tell you how many times a day I use this and have yer to replace a set of batteries.

"WHAT HAVE YOU GOT IN YOUR POCKET!!!"

710BMFAN

Knives:

Folder Large Mayonized Classic Sebbie (only folder I own)
Fixed Busse, either SHBA, older MS, or AD. They get rotated every few days, the folder doesn't.

Watch 25+ yr old Rolex Submariner

Lights 2 Arc AA's. 1 in pocket, 1 on a chain around neck I use at work. In workbag an Elektrolumens 3P Blaster. At home another 3P and a XM-3 next to the bed.

Except for the watch, I believe in redundancy and with a CCW I can carry whatever I can conceal.

busse pd, sak with photon micro, and a $20 casio :D

a word of warning on the surefire executive. awesome light and quite the battery burner

Knife: 2 many 2 list, mostly my own manufacture.

Watch: Seiko auto divers 200m skx007k2

Flashlight: LED Lenser tactical light.

Everything I own is my beater.

Love the info guys. Would really love to buy a Submariner for watch but can't afford one a Seko 007 is about all I am willing to or can currently afford to spend on a watch but I WILL have a Sub one-day:) I can get a Seiko 007 for around 160USD does any one have any opinions about wearing one on a Jame Bond NATO strap??? How tough are these?? Also has anyone compared this setup to a G-Shock. I am a Seiko fan though.

For knife I LIKE my Delica but am thinking about either a Small Sebenza or this new model from Boker called the Shadow, heck I may just stick with my delica.

Flashlights I have NO CLUE All I have are Mag-lights around the house and a mini-mag for carry. I think I want a sure-fire executive but I'm not sure I want some SMALL, LIGHT, TOUGH, with good light and a long battery life, would really appreciate some input on different carry flashlight types, brands, and pros/cons of each, I'm really in the dark on this one:)

One E2e Surefire, one Sebenza, one very small key light, (one wallet not shown), (one Leatherman Juice XE6 on the way). The E2e has 65 lums for 60 minuets it is real good for blinding others if needed, I only use it when really needed because of battery cost. My girl friend has my E2D Executive Defender it is 60 lums for 75 minuets and can be used as an impact tool or weapon. They are great for your first line of defense, or emergencies.

By beaters, I'm using the definition that I may not carry it every day, but when some hard core or nasty usage comes up, this is what I grab.

FB - Phil Hartsfield (I've had it so long, I don't remember which model). I've used this for cutting carpets, vinyl floor tile, car hoses, making gaskets, doing electrical work (stripping/cutting wire) and too many other things I can't remember. Couple of small chips in the blade edge but still cuts great.

Folder - Strider SMF. Cutting 100 lb pigs out from under cars, cutting sticky tops off of jars and once again can't even begin to remember everthing...haven't hurt it yet.

Watch - I've got cheaper watches and equally expensive watches, but the watch I wear the most is my Ti SMP. As rough as I am with watches it just has a couple of scuffs and small scratches in the bezel. Of course the band pretty scuffed up.

Light - I've got a good collection of SureFires but the one used the most (a set of batteries about every 10 days) is my SF Z3. That and my Arc 3aaa on my keychain.

My edc:

Knife - Benchmade 806D2
Watch - Omega Seamaster Professional Chrono
Flashlight - Surefire Executive defender E2D

First the watch, then I'll give you my opinion on the flashlight.

I've just bought my skx007 k2 a week and a half ago.

I LOVE it like you can't imagine. It's simply awesome. When I bought it I was under the impression that this model was called the "monster". It's not, the monster is the other skx diver. Doesn't mater though, this watch is beautiful, big and tough.

It's the classic diver, the model that progressed from Seikos original diver from 1965(model 6105?).
And it definetely has that classic diver feel to it, that's one of the reasons I love it as much as I do.
Mine came with a jubilee bracelet, and this is the type of bracelet I prefer. It's chunky as hell, strong and really good looking. I don't like the nato strap, but if you do go ahead. Keep in mind, steel can be easily cleaned of any gunk. Soft straps are much more difficult and get dirty and smelly quickly. For me, and considering my hard lifestyle, the steel bracelet is the only one that will do.

So far it's held up well, but I haven't had it long. I'm VERY hard on my gear, and I think this watch will see me through everything.
Currently running at circa 6 minutes too fast a month, it should come down though with a bit of time---these watches when new usually run fast but settle down with time.

Re. G-shocks. To each his own. Some like them some don't.

I had a dw-5600(same model as the new mil-shock project) during the 80's I bought as a kid. Excellent. Held up very well for 13 years on the same battery before the whole watch said good bye I can't take your insane abuse anymore.

Then in 1999 or so I made a mistake. I mistakenly thought that modern G-shocks were the same quality that the 80's G-shocks had.
IMO, they don't. They even look weird nowadays.
So IMO, I wouldn't look at anymore G-shcoks.
You know, modern G-shocks don't even come with Lithium batteries anymore. Why? Who knows. It won't last you 13 years though, like my old one did.

Ok, flashlight.

I've got an LED Lenser V2 tactical light, black.
Great light, waterproof, luxeon 1 watt led(very bright white light), takes 3 aaa batteries.
Very strong and durable so far. I bought it 6 months ago or so, and it's held up extremely well.
This one
http://www.sporttek.co.uk/LED_LENSER_LAW_Enforcement_V6.html

And from the company:
http://www.led-lenser.com/produkte/...ledlenserseriev/ledlenservfourapowerchip.html

The company says that the batteries are good for 40 hours of high output, and 100 for usable light output from the flashlight. That's been my finding aswell, although to be honest I'm still on my first set of batteries.

It's perfect for me.
Since I live in the middle of nowhere I wanted something that didn't take those hard to find lithium batteries.

Hope that helped, good luck!

The SureFire E2 used to be my daily carry also and I still think it is a nice light.
However, it has been replaced as the EDC by a Nuwai Q-III 3 watt luxeon led light.
The Q-III is built as well as (if not better than) the E2.
It is smaller (requires only one battery) and has a longer run time.
I like it's click on/click off switch better the the E2's momentary/twist on-off.
The E2 is slightly brighter with a more focused beam but looks very yellow compared to the clean white of the Q-III's luxeon star led. There is much more useable spill light (vice the hotspot) with the Q-III.
Speaking of leds; no more burnt or broken light bulbs. The E2 bulbs are over $14 a whack.
There are more accessories and options available for the E2, but I think the Q-III is a better light at nearly half the price.
I would not hesitate in recommending the E2 if someone asked about it, but
I like the Q-III a lot more .

Greg

Like a lot of the folks here, I really don't have "beaters". I will sometimes carry additional gear for specific purposes, but my EDC doesn't change.

Knives: Camillus Aftermath in pocket and Rob Simonich Bitteroot on neck chain

Lights: modified 3W Arc LS in pocket and Photon Freedom on keychain

Watch: Suunto X-Lander on wrist

I just can't see paying for good equipment and then carrying something cheap.

For all the info you'll ever need on flashlights check out candlepowerforums.com

Except for the ARC lights (now out of business, collectable and way too expensive now), all my lights are from Elektrolumens.com. IMHO the best bang for the buck out there. Think of them as the Swamp Rats of flashlights. About 1/2 the cost of Surefires and they use standard size batteries. He started out converting Mag Lites and his stuff is very similar to the Mags only better. I am way more than pleased with all of them.

Knife - BM 910 mostly, and it's been beat upon many times. It needs to take a vacation back to BM to get sharpened and tuned up, actually. .

Watch - Pulsar dive watch. I'm gonna replace it soon, but I've been wearing it for a few years now and it's been through a lot of crud, just keeps on going.

Flashlight - The beater is the QIII, although I like to carry my SF L4 when I'm dressed for it. The QIII goes everywhere, though.

Were you thinking of the SF E1e or E2? The E1e is light and small, but it's not that bright, especially when compaired to a QIII. The runtime isn't very impressive, though.

My favorite tough, small light is the Inova X5T, it's more than bright enough for me. .

The output of the QIII is fantastic - a bright white light with plenty of spill, but the fit-and-finish of the Nuwai does not compare to Surefire's.
I find the QIII's knurling too aggressive and the crenelated bezel is too sharp.
The Surefire has better type III hard anodising too.

Well, my ALWAYS light is a 1W Luexon-modded ARC AAA on my keychain. I also usually either have a Surefire G2, Inova X5T-HA, X0 or something of like size.

Knives are currently a Spyderco Solo in the pocket and a Camillus CUDA 154CM EDC on the neck.

Watches? I have several watches but lately I've been wearing a lowly Details that cost $5 from Walmart with a white face and black nylon band but my Seiko Flight Chronometer has been my favorite since I first saw one when I was like 12 years old.

watch- Omega constellation, automatic

knives- A Howard Hitchmoth w/ 3" blade, titanium and desert ironwood handle; about a 70 to 90 year old camillus stockman w/ bone handle; and a ladybug on the key chain. When in the field on survey, a Busse BM straight handle, and Dozier utility on the belt in addition to the above, with a leatherman wave in my bag.

flashlight- scorpion in the pocket, and photon on the keys.

edc goes as follows
knife-cuda dominator
watch- citizen watch of some sort, can't seem to place the model
light-sure fire e2e

Spydiefan04, Go to Chronograph.com and you can probably get that SKX007 cheaper (on a nylon strap $128.00USD)! Now, on to other things:

Knives: Schrade Uncle Henry Senior Rancher, Mike O Small M2, and James McGowan Nek2 fixed.

Watch: Cheap watch by "Sharp" that means more to me than any Rolex or Omega b/c it was my wife's Grandfathers. In process of getting a Seiko 007 w/special day/date wheel b/c I don't want to thrash my other watch.

Light: none at the moment, but Getting the Opalec replacement for the Minimag soon. Would hope for a moded Minimag along with a high output 7 LED light in brass from Peak and 2 Inova keychain lights.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Steven,
I'll agree the type III anodizing that SF uses now is better than the type II on the Nuwai. I should clarify the comparision I made was between a newer QIII and an older type II anodized E2, but I'still think the fit and finish of the QIII is on par with SF (my older E2 and 8X) and better than Streamlight (well at least better than my UltraStinger). I like'm all though.:)
