EDC Benchmade Knives

OP , if your heart is set on a BM then I say just pull the trigger. You want what you want.

But for your budget ($100-$150) , I also say you owe it to yourself to check out Spyderco. Paramilitary 2 , Yojimbo 2 , Manix 2 and Delica come to mind. Just a suggestion.

Good luck and enjoy.

Ok so I saw the knives in person. Spyderco Delica is almost the same as the BM bugout? I just don't like the way the hole looks.

The steels are different but very similar no?

I found the d2 rat too big and the handle of the mini too small. The grip was nice but noticeable in my pocket same with the mini freek

The Delica comes in a few different steels but the basic one is vg10 an ingot steel. Basic sharpening stones for vg10.

And the bugout comes in s30v a powdered super steel, which has higher edge retention due to the addition of more Vanadium. Ie diamond sharpening is idea with these steels but not 100% necessary.

Very different steel.

That's great. The rest of us don't.
That’s simply wrong, misleading and unhelpful. I have lots of BM’s and they are all fine. What you mean is, “That’s great. I don’t.”

I’m sorry you have had these poor experiences, but I contrast them with my own, excellent experiences.

Whatever you say. The knives have horrible qc and it's everywhere including first hand experience.. Countless review sites many threads here and a plethora of yt reviews. Not to mention the hordes of people on ig who also see horrible qc. Step out of fanboy look what everyone else is saying. Don't buy without inspection unless you want to send it back or just deal with the poor qc. There is a small percentage that come out fine. And there may be qc issues you are just dealing with or don't even realize them.

No, mate. I am speaking from my experience - good - and you are speaking from your experience - bad. I couldn’t give a flying fart about anedoctal evidence from what you or I have read on the internet. I am prepared to believe you are telling the truth, because I am most certainly telling the truth. Anything else is frankly horse manure. Now then, we can take it that you, Mo2, have had QC issues from BM. I have had QC issues from several other major knife companies. I’m not a “fanboy”, which is a term I associate with adolescent children, neither do I jump on love/hate bandwagons. I report and make my judgements based on my own experience. I suggest you do the same.

I did buy my Benchmades in a brick & mortar store and handled them before I bought. But I saw no big QC issues. Maybe I'm easier to please?? I have read of fit and finish issues here on BF. I just have not experienced them myself. I only bought my first Benchmade a couple years ago. So, I'm no fanboy.

why the love of the grip?

I've also been trying to understand this.;) My guess is tons of people make after market, scales, clips, screws, for them. Like glock. I don't like any of the griptilians blade shapes, so don't have on anymore. Also im done buying knives with plastic handles. Their not "bad", but I'd rather have a presidio, stryker, cla, 94×'s, or something. Really do think griptilians are popular because of all the aftermarket stuff you can buy to customize them.

Also, a Kershaw blur is one of the best cheapest lightest edcs with tons of colors options and steel types.

OP If pocket presence is an issue and you still want an Axis lock knife. I would suggest a 940, Valet, Mini Grip, and maybe the new Grizzly Ridge.
I wear XL gloves and find both the 940 and Mini Grip quite comfortable in hand. Granted, the 940 series is quite a jump in budget, but it's absolutely worth checking out. I can't speak for the others as I have yet to try them.

I’ve never been tempted by the Grip, either. But I would posit that the light weight, the axis lock, combined with the price, are what make this so very popular. The Ritter Grip was very pleasing to Doug’s fans, of course.

I bought a few Grips early on but quickly moved on the higher BM offerings----recently bought a discontinued 908 Stryker from an online retailer that's a fantastic knife but mostly I buy Presidio's. Guess what I'm trying to say is maybe save a bit more and get something deeper into the BM lineup.

Not impressed with the flimsy Bugout.

I think we may have something in common. I never considered the Bugout, same as the Grip. My first Benchmade was a 710 in D2. It was also my first OHO knife. Going from that to anything less would be disappointing. So far there isn’t a better, particularly as I also have a 710 in M390, but the Adamas, Crooked River, 581, 580 (with aftermarket scales, admittedly), etc., are all excellent. And all with centred blades. Who knew?

What makes you say the Bugout is flimsy? Because you have to go out of your way to get the scales to flex?

There are many things I don't like about the Griptilian. I don't like the blade shape (551), blade grind, and steel. I really dislike the styling of the handle and don't care for the general looks of the knife. It's ugly. And, I HATE the feel of the scales and the sound that's made when you close the blade. That cheap, hollow sound that you can only get from a full-size Griptilian. I HATE IT!

Yet, I own one. And, I will continue to own one until I can find something better. But, I admit, I'm not looking for something better. I have found my Griptilian to perform well under any/all conditions I have put it through. It gets used for food prep at home and when I am feeding the homeless. It was the knife in my pocket when I was remodeling a home. And, it works well with gloves. I have other knives I like much more but, for a general purpose, entry level knife it's hard to beat.

For every person badmouthing the Griptilian, there will be another person singing about its attributes. There are many things that the Griptilian is but, a bad knife is not one of them. It is a fine knife, a little high on the price, but a fine knife, just the same.

Step out of fanboy look what everyone else is saying.

I don't care what "everyone else is saying," be they fanboys or haterz.
I care what my experience with a brand is, and the Benchmade knives I have purchased over more than a decade now have all been just fine.
So have the Spyderco ones.

I don't give a crap what YouTube videos or Instagram folks have to say...I still don't really know what Instagram is or why I'm supposed to care about its existence. ;) Pretty sure I've figured out Twitter though; it's full of twits.

So I am either the most blessed individual when it comes to getting knives (possible), or many YouTube, Instagram, and other assorted internet denizens are full of crap or just like drama (very possible).

stabman stabman for the win.

The Grip is a great platform. I carry the Knifeworks Exclusive with M390 and Micarta most days at the office. As others have probably suggested don't overlook the Bugout for a light carry option. The 535gry has the looks and is a great EDC option.

The Bugout may not have the stoutest handles but in no way is it "flimsy"

Trust me, you're missing out by not trying one........
