Recommendation? EDC folder

I don't know if I recall correctly, but didn't Sal mention somewhere sometime not too recent in the past that he thought the Sage 5 LW platform would be perfect for trying out new steels?

This was recommended to me what do you all think about these?

I always recommend the one I am currently selling
I've been known to recommend things I'm willing to part with (though not actively selling). Unfortunately, nobody has been smart enough to reach out & I didn't care enough to post them.

*Edited to add - I'm not looking to part with the Spider Monkey.

If I didn't hate dealing with the post I have a few I'd sell cheap. (Pm2, utx-85, native 5, native chief... To name a few) But I hate going in the post office so I never post anything for sale. 🙃

By the way, just because I ordered one. Civivi are about to do a utility knife with replaceable blades. If you are just cutting stuff in knife killing conditions, replacing the blade might be easier than maintaining it.

And this one looks nice.

There is a current discussion on the Spyderco forum. I don't recall the details but there are couple of new steels confirmed for the Sage 5: REX-121 and SPY27. Who knows how long until they drop but that'll be my excuse to try SPY27.

Thanks :) I just finished eating dinner with my Sage 5 and am again amazed at the ergos and cutting performance of that knife. I think BF and Youtube has ruined steels a bit, because S30V is pretty amazing stuff when you compare it to normal steels ... I'd still love to try some of them that are apparently head over heels better than S30V!

S30V has its enormous benefits, even in 2024. You can get one screaming sharp in 5 minutes, some of these other super steels that just isn’t the case. I LOVE my S30V stuff.

That said, I haven’t even needed to sharpen my magnacut CRK yet… it’s been months and it’s still factory sharp. Id buy a sage 5 in magnacut in seconds if Sal offered it.

S30V is a good steel. It's not like 8Cr13Mov or something where it sucks versus a lot of modern alternatives at a comparable price level. It's just not as exciting as it used to be and some of us have had a lot of it.

Heck, I've developed the latter problem with M390/20CV, S35VN, 154CM, and some other steels that are now ubiquitous. By comparison, S30V went big sooner as a Spyderco mainstay and they've kept up with it. So some of us have been itching for alternatives as a matter of novelty in addition to any particular benefits a new steel has to offer.

I’m sure this has been beat to def. But I have been looking for a while and am struggling, I think I’m too particular with what I’m looking for. Obviously looking for an edc folder but would like to remain $200 or less. It’s mainly a pocket knife but no slip joints or button locks. I like frame locks and liner locks and lock backs but could be open to other things. Blade is approx 3-3.5” drop point, but would really like a wharncliff or sheepsfoots/reverse tanto. Bronze washers are best due to environment around a farm. It will do some hard work but nothing ridiculous. I am currently carrying a Spyderco delica from 20 years ago and Ontario rat1 aus8 but I have about 50 knives just nothing jumping out at me. I’m not a Benchmade fan since my griptilian sheepsfoot does not impress me but I’m open to all suggestions. Thanks ahead of time for helping
EDC for me has been a Cold Steel Ti-Lite 6 folder for about 8 years now. I throw knife and this is such a tough, tough knife that can handle me using it for all sorts of prying, cutting, and excellent for protection since it fits perfectly in your front pocket. You can pull it out and open it so quickly that when someone sees the size of the thing in your hand they can’t believe you had such a scary monster on you. I live in California and it’s completely legal to have even a bigger knife in my pocket as long as it’s a folder. No fixed blades hanging on your side is legal here, but a folding sword in your pocket is. California, Go figure!

From Larrin Larrin 's testing it appears to perform very similarly to S35VN, though differing in composition some. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a knife in it, but already having several S30V, S35VN, and S45VN knives I personally won't go out of my way just to try it.

I've seen different reports but most are generally positive. Larrin isn't the only one to put it on par with S35VN and the only real distinction I've seen is anecdotal reports about it responding well to stropping. 🤷‍♂️ Like I was saying a few posts up though, it at least offers some novelty and in this case, a little bit of Spyderco history. Remember that this steel was developed as a Spyderco exclusive. It just had the misfortune of coming out around the same time as S45VN and just before MagnaCut.

It seems that MagnaCut sucked a lot of the wind out of the sails for both of those steels. I tend to be picky on designs and even so, I now have several knives in MagnaCut and none in either S45VN or SPY27. A Sage 5 in SPY27 will scratch that itch. I'm still looking for something up my alley in S45VN...

A SHF perhaps?

I like a flat spine, or at least to not have sharp ramps or bump-outs for studs. This also limits which Spyderco models work for me. Some occasionally line up properly for my hand but most cause my thumb to rest on an uncomfortable spot during use. Even my beloved Sage 5 was only good for me after I rounded over the hump and crowned the spine. (I'll do the same, and do it better with experience when the SPY27 version drops.)

I also like more flickable actions and preferably on bearings so CRK is out too.

EDIT: I also don't like obnoxious jimping or 0.165″ blade thickness on a folder so Hinderer is out too.
