EDC Folder

Thank you all for your responses. DallasSTB gets a little extra thanks for all the extra words.

I truly appreciate all of the recommendations. The Emerson deserves a little more investigation on my part. Spyderco is pretty much out for me as I prefer thumb studs to holes. I love the look of the Benchmade Rift but the handle I don't think would cut it.

So, I'd love something in a near as light and compact package as my current CRKT. I want a manual opener with thumb studs. And I need a handle that inspire confidence in it's ability to keep my fingers off the blade should I stab something.

Thanks again for all of the responses. Sorry I'm being so particular.

Get a Ritter Griptilian. S30v steel and a fantastic blade geometry. It's a tough knife that slices well.

No problem at all. Like many others here, I'll take any opportunity to talk to much about sharp pointy things

I'm sorta with you on Spyderco's visually, but they are fantastically made and a tremendous value once you get used to the hole. I left off Emerson and several other worthy brands just because I didn't want to take a whole page for myself. They have good knives. You might look harder are the Benchmade Axis lock knives - especially the 707. Same blade size as the CRKT you mention and a generally great knife. Others with this type of lock would be the 710 (4" blade), the 707, & the 94X series (940, 943, etc.). Personally after going through virtually the same decision process as you, I picked the 940. It has great steel, an Axis lock, and a compact form factor with regard to the blade-to-length ratio. Great quality too.

Good luck

Sounds to me like the knife you have, comes close to filling your needs and you feel you want a change. Maybe spend some of the $200, to have yours sharpened or buy a sharpening kit.Or maybe buy the same thing you have without serrations. It appears that there are several variations of "your" knife.

Yeah, DallasSTB, I didn't mean to imply Spydercos are bad knives, just they're not what I want. I know they're great knives and have lots of fans. I've also heard all kinds of good things about using a hole for opening. I'm just not a fan.

Henry44, my wife said the same thing. The problem being that now I've started researching, I'd like an upgrade in quality. Thanks.

One word...EMERSON...any Emerson
If you can't buy new there are often real good deals here in the Forum.
I just scored a like new Mini Commander for about half what EKI charges.
If you want near instant deployment, go with the Wave.

At the moment I'm leaning towards pre-ordering a Benchmade 755, so I need to find a good price from a reputable dealer.

3.5" is the limit in my area. I'd also consider the 615 but finding one new and not at a price premium has proven difficult. In the 755 I see a lot of the SnG with a lot less cost. The grip looks solid. I don't know anything about the steel as I can't find anything in layman-speak that explains its differences with S30V.

I really dig the Kershaw Volt, too, but it's just too big for me. Oh well.

With the selection out there, it comes down to personal preference I think.

I like:
SOG Vulcan 80$ if you look around. 175$ msrp, not AO
Kershaw Shallot (assisted opening, frame lock, 40-60$)
Benchmade Griptillian 550 (~90-100$, axis lock, not AO)

all just under 3.5" for the legal carry limit (in my state)

The griptillian and vulcan are very solid, perhaps more than is needed for an EDC, but I'm paranoid about having bad locking systems, I've had linerlocks and framelocks give out quite fast and easily. I would also suggest getting a non-serrated blade, and by preference of not liking a scratched up finish, stick with satin finish (In my opinion).

I would also recommend putting in the 50$ for a spyderco sharpmaker, which will not only be used for your EDC folder, but for the rest of the collection you know you're going to buy :)

Other ones to possibly consider:
SOG Flash II
Spyderco folders

GL!!!

oh ho ho.... didn't know you were looking at that! Excellent find. I'll still recommend a 940, but BM's new Sibert Model does look awesome. My crystal ball says there may be one of those in my future, too.

The Buck Vantage Pro has the steel you want,a great pocket clip and fast deployment.

my $0.02:

i'd suggest some kind of pliers based multi-tool. you'll find more uses for a Leatherman Wave or similar than you will for a single bladed folder.

Funny enough, I ordered a Charge TTi today. I'm looking forward to carrying it and a new knife. I guess it was time for me to get some of the kit I'd been putting off. :D

hehe. nice.

i've edc'd my 'wave for over ten years now and it more than fulfills all my folding blade wants and needs.

although admittedly, i'm contemplating a micro or one of the new CS mini models in the near future.

an added bonus with a multitool: they're very sheeple friendly

If this quote is true:

"Budget: I’d prefer to stay under $200. Of course, lower would be better if I can still satisfy my needs. If it must be higher, I’d entertain it."

Get a Samll Sebenza. Its really worth it. It may not seem like it at first glance, but save up and get one.

Beyond that, a small fixed blade could do the work of most EDC floders, if you ask me. ALong those lines, look at an Izula or HEST. I got an Izula. Its amazing and EDC's well even in an office.

ipm, I looked long and hard at the Sebenza. I wasn't able to handle one, but to look at it, my concern is as I've stated with several others: there doesn't appear to be enough protection to keep my finger off the blade as I'd like. Doubtless, it is a wonderful blade. I'm just not sure it'd fit my needs. Heck, I even considered an XM-18, but I don't think I could get the wife to buy-in on that, and I'm not sure I could bring myself to actually use a $650 knife. Yeah, I know, I'm hard to please. Thanks for all of the responses.

Honestly if I had 200 to spend on a good EDC, first I would get a Spyderco Paramilitary, digi camo. And then with the rest I would snatch up a Benchmade Mini Griptilian :D I love these knives , Some of the best EDC knives ever made.
