EDC Folder

ipm, I looked long and hard at the Sebenza. I wasn't able to handle one, but to look at it, my concern is as I've stated with several others: there doesn't appear to be enough protection to keep my finger off the blade as I'd like. Doubtless, it is a wonderful blade. I'm just not sure it'd fit my needs. Heck, I even considered an XM-18, but I don't think I could get the wife to buy-in on that, and I'm not sure I could bring myself to actually use a $650 knife. Yeah, I know, I'm hard to please. Thanks for all of the responses.

get one of these and if you must have it reground. I must say though, Emerson knives come extremely sharp and I cant imagine a situation where it would not perform up to standards unless you needed to make some extremely fine cuts. If you do, get it reground by Tom Krein. But you sure as hell wont slip forward on one.

oh, if you want a cheap option I suggest the boker trance. high flat grind in your choice of drop point or clip point and it has a little finger gaurd, plus the ergos are good.

yeah, the sebenza can be a bit slippery depending on the task at hand. the XM-18 is a bit pricey. CR makes a fixed sekelton knife as well. think it over.

no thoughts on izula or HEST?

you may find the Izula is good but it too is a bit difficult to hold at times, as in keeping your ahnd off the blade. cord wrap helps and ahndles would be enve better. you can buy those now. i have not handled a HEST yet. it looks OK, though.

Go to Buck website, pick build your own knife and build a Buck 110, example, N/S bolsters, smooth Asian water buffalo scales and S30V blade $125 shipped-cant beat it. Many other combos available-most under $200

The Emersons definitely look like they would fit the bill, and the Mini Commander is on my short list. That said, it's 154CM (I would like S30V or 'better') and I'd rather not get quite so close to the 3.5" as the state has never set a standard for measurement.

The Sage 2 is also on my short list and may be my number one option if I decide not to go with the Benchmade 755 for some reason. As with the Sebenza, I'm concerned it might be a little slick but maybe the finger grooves would be enough.

ipm, sorry, I meant to address the Izula in my previous post. I looked at it, but I'm not too big on the whole neck knife idea, and I don't know how else I'd carry it. Fixed blades obviously have some real advantages. Unfortunately, their big disadvantage for me is carry-ability.

I looked at the Buck 110. They're pretty but have the grip problem I've mentioned.

Point 2 here is valid, I can't help you with that. You should pick something you are comfortable with. The mini commander offers a problem due to the recurve giving loads of cutting surface.

As for 154cm , Emerson has been using ATS-34 or 154CM (two steels that are as near as doesnt matter) since the beginning and their heat treat is most excellent. S30V is great stuff, but I wouldnt pass off 154CM because it is perceived as being "inferior". FWIW it takes a great polish and is easy to work with.

Thank you, everyone. I've just preordered a Benchmade 755. Who knows when I'll get it, but I look forward to it. Thanks for all of your insight. I know none of you recommended the 755 in particular, but your suggestions are what lead me farther down the rabbit hole.

The Emerson is my fall back should I decide I'm not enthralled by the 755.
