what would you recommend i purchase for my sister who's going off to school? i'm looking to get her a knife for around $50 that she could carry around campus, have handy for everyday kinds of things, and also (may God forbid) for self defense. i've considered the push knife style for her, but i think she might get more everyday use out of a folder or auto.

any recommendations or opinions? thanks in advance for all your help;>)

Spyderco DragonFly with the FRN handle and Plain Edge blade.
Small, light, tough, and inexpensive.

lots of women I know prefer carrying pepper spray to knives

but if your sister likes to carry a tactical knife, how about a Delica 4 Spyderedge? That's a handy little critter. Slim carry, not too big, sharp as all get out right from the box. Reliable, too.

spyderco native, delica or an alox scaled sak. for defense you should either get her some pepper spray or a stun gun. unless she is skilled with a knife for self defense she would probably get it taken away and used against her. I'm dealing with this same problem with my daughter. later, ahgar

Get her a small multi tool (Micra, Squirt, Crosscut) or a Swiss Army Knife (Swiss Memory, Midnight Manager, Whistle knife) and a can of Fox Labs pepper spray. The small tools aren't likely to get her in trouble, even at the most liberal campus and if it's small enough to put on her keys she'll be more likely to carry it and get some real use out of it.

She might be more likely to use the pepper spray than a knife against some drunk frat boy who doesn't know what "NO" means. She won't have to worry about killing him but that should give her time to kick him in the jimmy and beat feet. I've never known a girl who was mugged in a parking lot but I've known far to many who were the victims of date rape.

Just food for thought.

I agree w/rifon,pepper spray first, cause you don't have to be so damn close, the knife I picked up for a gal was the spyderco tasman salt, it has a hooked blade like the harpy, very intimidating, and is a definate cutter.

Benchmade minigrip is the clear choice. All of my girlfriends have bought them. They also exclusively buy tanto minigrips. I don't know why.

The lightweight (1.35 oz.) Spyderco Spin would make a great little purse knife and is very sheeple friendly with a VG-10 blade that's just under two inches long. I gave my wife one and she loves it. The Spin can be found online for under $50 bucks. (the picture below is very close to actual size)

"This Lipstick Knife appears to be just a normal lipstick applicator that you would find in any woman's purse. However this is no ordinary lipstick! By twisting up the applicator you are able to access a 1.5" razor sharp serrated blade! The perfect self defense item for women, so buy some for your women."

Beware that a lot of campuses ban knives on school property including dormitories. Nutty, I know, but there have been cases of people getting in trouble because their RA found out they had a knife of any kind. I seem to remember a case where somebody almost got kicked out for having a letter opener.

On the other hand, when I went to college, lots of people had knives. Fixed blades, folders, autos.. One guy had a crossbow. (Though I did have to take it the bolts away from him one night when he was aiming it a somebody across the quad. I draw the line there).

The lipstick knife will get you in SERIOUS trouble in a lot of jurisdictions, such as CA.

You want to stay safe, go for a SAK. Very sheeple friendly. I recommend two knives. One for using that people won't freak out about seeing, and one for carrying that never gets unsheathed except for emergencies.

a HAK might be a good idea depending on the local laws. It's fixed blade, under 2 inches, and easy to draw. (do a search for hideaway knife)

I'd get her a Spyderco Delica PE.Small, light good steel and cuts much better than it's size would lead you to believe.tom.tom.

CS Mini Culloden, Emerson LaGriffe, Utility HAK in said order. A few dollars more than the budget at hand, but for my sis I'd kick it up a few bucks just for the peace of mind knowing she had a quality piece.

I would suggest checking to see if knives are even allowed on campus at all.

IME, women don't use their pockets much. YMMV. But based on that, I'd consider a CRKT Falcon or Carson F4 or similar neck knife with the sheath as a keyring fob. that way it can be in her hands on her way to or from the car at night. Nothing could possibly be faster. And a little flat Garrity keychain LED for lighting up possible ambush spots or slightly blinding bad guys while she makes meaningful use of the knife in a self-defense context.

I'm a guy, and I carry a cheesy Outdoor Life knockoff of the F4 on my keys. Those are available at K-Mart and are still pretty good.
