edc for a college gal

In addition to steel pens, here is a carbide-tipped, steel, penlike object I sometimes keep handy:

If anyone asks, I enjoy scribing, marking or engraving on hard steel, glass, plastics, ceramic, and jewelry.

I think there has become too much emphasis on the personal protection aspect.

I've given women knives I would carry (well, I do try to find bright colors).

The standard knives, like the Mini-Grip and Delica should prove most useful without being overly attention getting.

At the risk of sounding sexist, chicks dig the rainbow coating. Also Damascus. I base this remark on a scientific sample of women who happen to be around sometimes.

OK ...knife makers....here is your chance,Damascus scribe w/rainbow titanium tip or billet rainbow titanium scribe .Women will love it.....make that me too.

At those bastions of tactical spy goodies: Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace, and True Value. :D Find them near measuring and marking tools.

You can get them at art supply dealers or from Snap on,Mac,Matco tool dealers. The tool dealers will have the spring loaded type. Also excellent for busting side windows out of cars.....firemen and EMT's carry them.....as well as thieves. The aluminum bodied ones break if you pry with them.

If she were my sister, I'd get her a Becker BK-9.

Not too much over $50. Well worth the peace of mind. :D

Have you asked your sister what she'd like?

The "no knives" policy of some campuses have exemptions for "tools", so anything like a small folder, SAK, small multitool, Christy knife, etc., will likely cause less consternation than a fullsize "tactical" folder if someone sees it in her purse. And probably be easier to carry and more usefull as well.

Take the money you save buying the knife and get her a pepper spray class (if required by state law) and some pepper spray for protection.

Sure, pepper spray, tazers, an other nonbladed things might help with SD, but they're not so handy for "everyday things."

If knives aren't allowed but multitools are, consider a Leatherman Wave, it has a locking, one handed opening blade. I'd also find a way to train her how she can effectively use the dang thing under stress.

The Spyderco Cricket is usually one of the top recommendations for women. Lots of people like the rainbow chive as well (make sure to offer to take out the speed safe spring if she doesn’t like assisted opening).

I agree with the common theme here of choosing a knife for everyday utility rather than slicing and dicing a bad guy. I also agree with the pepper spray or mace type of device if self-defense is a big issue. It applies to everyone, everywhere, and has been said many times over, but the best self-defense weapons your sister could carry with her are common sense and awareness. As far as the knife goes, maybe something like a small multi-tool or SAK would do her well. If you have any decent knife outlets around you, it might be wise to take her out shopping and let her pick out her knife.

P.S. I'd forget about the idea of buying an automatic knife - sounds like a lot of trouble and hassle just waiting to happen.

I would recommend something very sheeple friendly as an EDC knife or tool. A Swiss Card or small SAK or Leatherman Micra would do a lot of work for her and not freak people out. I would definetely advise not flashing it arouns, and not taking it out when not necesary. I would also not think about SD when choosing this knife. There are many more better suited tools for the job.

My wife uses a SAK on a regular basis. I think the multitool avenue is proabaly the best way to go. A SAK is an easy choice, but a Leatherman Juice S2 would be a classy gift as well. It would probably see regular use, which is more than I could say a more tactical-style knife, given the circumstances.

My Native has been ending up in my pocket the last few days. Great steel, great ergos, great blade shape, finger choil = Very practical EDC

Spyderco Delica. Or Salt I, since I'll bet she won't be one for doing typical maintenance on a pocket knife.

Honestly, does anyone think she would be ill-served by a Spyderco Delica or Salt?
