EDC General Use

Hey Toothed, when I was a young Soldier we definitly were NOT peace keepers!
If you want law and order, call the Police.
If you want the enemy killed, call the Military!

Since I am a veteren, I can always carry the Military model without reservation. But I really don't like the word "Police" on my knife...but I really do LOVE the G-10 Police, so I have learned to live with it.

Morgoth412, I had forgotten about the Chinook. And now there is the Chinook II...I'll have to check them out.
maybe I'll actually get my hands on one at a knife show.

Thanks,
Allen.

Regarding steel liners vs single nested liner - the other day I used a 1st-gen REKAT Pioneer PE folder to cut off a 3.5" branch of hard green wood. The wood was hard, it took a LONG time, and I subjected the blade (& the pivot area) to severe forces. When I was done I realized that no other folder I possess or have owned would come away from that unscathed. Dual steel liners + G10 scales + rolling-lock = tremendous strength. It would have been hard on an AXIS knife, but would probably have been much harder on the Military - that sort of stress could cause some loosening in the pivot area. I'm just hypothesizing, but that experience caused me to appreciate having a very burly non-liner lock. Of course it was the wrong tool for the job, but it was the tool I had with me - it was up to the task but I seriously doubt the Millie would have been (or it would have taken me hours). The Axis AFCK I think would be somewhat more able to withstand those stresses without becoming significantly worn or loose.

Wow. That was a barrage of completely unsubstantiated claims, and no small amount of pure supposition. You got all of this information from cutting a single stick with your knife, huh?

Well, I said I was hypothesizing, but there is actual reasoning and experience behind it. I have trashed a Delica camping (FRN). I have also trashed a Gerber Covert, although it stood up better, probably due to its more durable construction (single nested liner in Zytel handle). I put the REKAT through much larger stresses than either of those knives, and it is undaunted - due in part to its superior construction (dual steel liners w/G10 scales) and in part to the fact that the blade/pivot area is much wider and therefore is stronger/distributes force over more area than either of the smaller knives. The AFCK and the Military fall in the middle of this spectrum. Both have a narrower blade/pivot area than the REKAT. The AFCK (which I own) has the dual steel liners while the Military (which I have only examined) does not.

Taking my REKAT apart, it is apparent that the G10 scales flex a whole lot more than the steel liners, despite being thicker. My experience is that putting a lot of stress on the pivot area can cause permanent loosening, which is something I disfavor in a folding knife. This experience would seem to indicate that dual steel liners are more likely to resist this loosening under hard use. Of course, if you are going to avoid such ab/use of your folder, then this doesn't become an issue. But I thought it was relevant to the thread.
