EDC Karambit Help- Knife Noob Needs Help

Read Steve Tarani Karambit: Exotic Weapon of the Indonesian Archipelago book ISBN #0-6568-206-2 as a good way to start to learn about the Karambit. It's not a knife for everyone. Mastery is difficult and potentially dangerous especially with a live blade.

Short answer... no.

In my opinion, a quality folding kerambit will start around $300 with one exception... 511 folding kerambit for just over $100.

Buy quality and only cry once.

Both of these --^ hit nail on the head. I ran into the same issue with wanting a karambit style knife, however I didn't really care for the fixed models I saw because I wanted 3.25-3.5" on blade length and just didn't like the carry options for the size. About 2 years ago I bought a mantis bali-bit or karambasong or whatever the hell they call it and sold it shortly after. Interesting little knife and not bad to mess around with but the function isn't really there whether utility or defense, it just isn't a good quickdraw or easy to handle. HOWEVER I did recently stumble very luckily onto someone selling an emerson s-kbit for a stellar price and don't regret buying it one bit

Please familiarize yourself on the forums. If you would like taty63 to send you the link, please PM him as non-sponsor links are not to be posted within threads. Also, Charlie Mike's advice is solid. Don't waste your time or money on a sub-$30 Karambit.

Karambit's are designed for fighting, not to be used as a utility blade. As a minor, I would highly stress that you do not carry a karambit, regardless of intended purpose.

secondly---YES---^^^ (assuming your local laws allow carry of this blade in question)
If you end up in any kind of scenario where LEO sees a karambit and you have an officer that thinks it's his duty to harass you, it will be a lot easier for him to do so with you being a minor ( and yes you may be targeted as a minor, it happens all the time). That's just the way it is. I implore you to look at other options and hold off. Perhaps try to find something like a kershaw/emerson collab which is fairly affordable in price and they are built by kershaw with emerson designs and also use the wave feature, good for cutting boxes and look a little less intimidating. The collabs also cover an array of emerson designs. Kershaw cyro and similar designs may be something to look into as well.
Best part for you in this though is that in the next few years the cold steel karambit should be readily available ( and possibly half the price of it's emerson counterpart) and meet a lot of market demand for karambits.

Not true. There are many Karambits on Ebay. Yes, there replicas of Emerson and Fox and they are excellent. I have both an Emerson and a Fox and to speak quite frankly the respond and do the job. There's one on Ebay for about $10.00 bucks plus shipping with 440C there

By "replicas" I take it you mean counterfeits/ripoffs, correct? And if you think 10 bucks with shipping gets you 440C you are dreaming.

I respect your opinion completely, but I just don't think that this is fair considering I will be using as a simple pocket knife tool and practice device until I can get a professional Karambit. If you have any recommendations on a cheap trainer I would be very grateful.

Ah...so you are going to practice, then go "pro" with your kerambit.

As just about everyone has said, kerambits are not EDCs. I dont think you care about that, or any of the other opinions offered (like Charlie Mike's), so I'm not sure why you asked.

Ok, to be truthful I'm new to knives and want to start to get into them. I want a karambit for EDC but don't have the money for an expensive one like Emerson or Fox. I'm not going to be flipping it unless I have practiced with a trainer for a while so safety is not my concern. I need a karambit that WONT BE USED FOR SD and will simply be something that be used as cool looking tool until I train to use it properly. So here's my question: Can I find a karambit under 50 (preferably far from it) that will be good as a tool and I can grow into the knife world with, also FIXED OR FOLDING(WHICH IS BEST). It must be 4" OR UNDER. Thanks. A CHEAP TRAINER RECOMMENDATION will be greatly appreciated as well.

Extra Details:

I'm a minor(very responsible my peers won't even know I have it wont show it off everywhere i go)
In Florida

On second read...nothing in this post makes any sense.

1) You don't need to train to use a flipper.
2) A trainer is dull. You cannot use it as a tool.

If it wasn't for the grammar, I would have pinned him as a troll.

To be perfectly honest, the presence of 2 new members who joined on the same day and only appear in one thread having a discussion that leads up to posting a link to knockoff karambits on eBay all seems a bit suspicious.

But that's just me.

Maybe he wants one because it's the "cool knife" in CS:GO and he wants to be hardcore.

See how "hardcore" you are in jail after you get busted carrying that thing.

You aren't the only one who caught that ;)

I EDC a karambit...I've had one in my left pocket for the last 6 years. :)
They are actually pretty great for utility tasks, which makes sense since they started off as a small utility knife in yonder lands.

They have been used in martial arts, yes, but so have rice flails, or even plain old sticks.

Sure, if you have practiced enough to go pro.

I can cut tape, clothing tags and zip ties...I am pro, hear me roar! :D

Of course, it helps that I'm not a teen; I remember the cops' attitude towards teens with knives, and I wouldn't recommend a karambit for teenagers to carry around.

For a teen, an Endura, Delica, Griptilian or one of Kershaw's or Buck's offering at Walmart would be better, because they are carried by so many people.
"Why are you carrying this knife?"
"Grandma gave me a Walmart gift card."

What Charlie Mike said the first time...

Also, a karambit will run a high risk of running outside of Florida statute allowing for carry of a "common pocket knife", which has never been completely defined. Given that you tell us that you're a child, I don't see this ending well if you choose to buy and carry that type of knife around routinely, there are much better options with much less potential downside.

Actually its well defined any folding knife with a blade of 4" or less is a common pocket knife" in Florida. Once again I don't know how old you think I am, but trust me when I tell you that is not the problem. I tried to get this across in the original post this thread was created for one purpose and one purpose only for either a better recommendation for a different knife style or a low cost Karambit which will be used just like a pocket knife. IT WON'T BE SHOWN IN PUBLIC and will just be used to practice for a year or so until I can buy a real Karambit. ONCE AGAIN if you can't give me a specific recommendation for a different kind/style of knife or a low cost Karambit then DO NOT POST I don't care about you peoples technicalities such as: The karambits functionality, MY AGE, and the original purpose of a Karambit.

Also to marcinek I was asking for a separate recommendation for a trainer. And to #1 I don't think I ever said that

Thanks for actually doing what the thread was made for.

No problem. :)

Utilitarian hawkbill knives.

There are lots of slipjoint hawkbill blades also; Case makes some, and Boker Plus has some very inexpensive ones.
No one worries about a knife without a lock (you could even carry them in England, as long as the blade is 3 inches or under), and you'll quickly find out if that blade shape is for you.

Don't be an a-hole and if you had half a brain you would know that its perfectly legal. Also if you could read you would know that I have said before that I won't be a some douche who goes twirling it around in public. ITS GOING TO BE USED STRICTLY AS A UTILITY KNIFE

There's nothing going on I don't want a knockoff. I've been trying to reply for 2 days but the site wouldn't let me because of the DNS thing.

Why are you such a downer. Just because you are passionate about your skills with karambit doesn't mean that its not an EDC. Like I've mentioned I want a cheap one to get comfortable with and to practice with for a year or two and when I have the money I'll by a professional one. What wrong with that!?
