Although all the characters in LOTR carried swords or large knives, those would have been impractical for many daily tasks, be it whittling, slicing an apple, or cutting the string on a packet of lembas. So what do you think they would have carried? Here are my thoughts (ignore the non-middle earth coins in some of these pictures).

First, for Frodo, being a sensible hobbit he would carry a basic utilitarian design like this:

Aragorn, with his long history of traipsing in the wild, would have found this handy:

Gandalf would be perfectly at home with this:

Gimli, as a dwarf and from a long line of crafstmen who appreciated utility as well as beauty, would have carried something like this:

As an elf, Legolas would prefer something with graceful lines:

And Boromir, with his regal nature and needing a variety of blades for use in town and in the field, would carry this:

So what do you think should be added to this or changed?

Being a practical Hobbit (as well as a tightwad(?)), I think Frodo would carry something along the lines of afriction folder along the lines of an Opinel ... if he didn't just make a sheath for his paring knife out of an empty cereal box and duct tape.

Gandalif would have something along the lines of an enchanted Sgian Dubh under his robe.

Love this thread idea! :D

L lambertiana , you’ve made some excellent choices, but…

…did they have Torx screws in Middle Earth? ;)

I was thinking the same thing. An Opinel seems fitting for a Hobbit, but the sodbuster makes sense, too.

The Seven Daily Hobbit Meals
  • 7:00am – Breakfast.
  • 9:00am – Second Breakfast.
  • 11:00am – Elevenses.
  • 1:00pm – Luncheon.
  • 4:00pm – Afternoon Tea.
  • 6:00pm – Dinner.
  • 8:00pm – Supper.
With their single-mindedness towards eating, I think the Hobbits would have carried something with a larger blade, suitable for food. A Laguiole would seem to fit the bill.

Good point, although I think the sodbuster and Opinel suggestions fit that bill as well. Also, remember that a “large” blade to a human would be a whopper to a hobbit. :D
