EDC Multitool?

Hey everyone!
I'm looking for a Multitool for EDC and Law enforcement use. I want it to have a strong cutting blade that will be up to some harder tasks as this will replace my knife at times. I would also like to be able to access the blade without opening the tool. The tool will ride on my belt most of the time, but I don't want it to be so huge that I can't throw it in my pocket in a pinch. I have a Leatherman wave, but I want something different (no real reason). Does anyone have any suggestions for a hard working Multitool that fits the above description?

Thanks!

Wave is what I have, I never leave my house without it. I have tried other brands of multi tool but always seem to go back to the Wave

An outside-opening blade is very convenient, but limits your choices a good deal. I would second Mr. T's recommendation of a Swisstool or Swisstool Spirit. The latter is a little bit lighter and easier on the belt, so that would be my first choice for EDC. However, as you want the blade for "some harder tasks", the larger Swisstool may be better. These are each pretty spendy too, but in my view they are the best designed and constructed MTs on the market. You just have to decide if you can handle the larger 11 ounce Swisstool all day, every day. Especially if you already have a lot of weight on your belt.

I really like Victorinox multitools, but they are a tad bulky for pocket carry and the knife blades can't be opened one handed. I think a Leatherman Skeletool would work well for you, it's relatively small, has a pocket clip, one hand opening 154CM blade. It has very few tools, though.

Leatherman Skeletool CX, definitely. Covers most of what the Wave does for everyday tasks, still OHO, 154CM blade rather than 420HC, and much more pocketable.

Victorinox multitools are easily the best I've come across. I keep a Leatherman wave around for an expendable tool, but the Vic. Spirit is incomparably better. I find the skeletools or be complete junk. Haha.

Alox Cadet - It's really all you need.

However, if you want to abuse a tool, then it's not for you. Use the right tools for the job.

A multitool is not a good substitute for a dedicated pocket knife. Dedicated tools are always the best.

I always carry a Skeletool for the handy pliers and screwdrivers, but I always carry a dedicated pocket knife, too.

What multitool you need or want really comes down to what functions are important, and you don't specify what those needs are.

Another vote for Victorinox's MTs. I like my Letherman tools, but Victorinox's F&F is outstanding.

Also agree with the Skeletool CX. I have the regular version and I absolutely love it. Don't carry it that often as I'm not permitted in work uniform so I usually keep my Charge TTi in my back pack that stays with me.

I would also suggest the Charge. Very useful and with a S30V blade, you don't need to sharpen very often. But I also agree with TwinDog about a dedicated pocket knife. Don't think a multi-tool can replace it.

At least I don't think so :D

I like the Leatherman Rebar, the blade steel isn't anything fancy like in the Skeletool or Charge, but it's got a solid selection of tools and it's not as bulky as the Super Tool. I got one with me at all times, along with a Leatherman Squirt on my keys.

I'd get the Skeletool. Very basic tool assortment. Not heavy. One-handed, half-serrated blade will get through anything in a pinch. And like someone else mentioned, functions best as a back-up blade.

Can you describe, in more specific detail, what sort of things you use tools for and what sort of things you use the knife blade for?

You've got some inherent tensions in what you're describing. Anything that will be pocketable won't be as hardworking as your current Wave. The Juice line and Rev (has pocket clip) are the next step down in size.

I personally like the Leatherman Charge line I owned the TTI but sold it and got the ALX as the ALX has an extra bit holder instead of the scissors.

Leatherman Charge TTI all day every day for years has never let me down except for the one on the bottom of the lake turns out they dont float so well:cool:

For multi-tool, my favorite is also the Wave as already mentioned. But if it were me on duty, I'd leave the blade on tool as a backup, and keep a dedicated rescue blade handy (for those seat belt extractions and stuff). Spyderco has a bunch of rescue type blades available. Assist, Atlantic, Rescue (multiple variations of each).
