EDC musings

The A.Wright Bunny Knife I posted above with our Blade Forums Bunny Knife. The A.Wright Bunny Knife is a little fuller than our Bunny Knife but both are virtually the same size in all respects.

Note that the bottom two in the middle in the picture below are single-blade versions by A.Wright and that the bolsters on all the A.Wright versions are what A.Wright calls Barlow but what I call long bolstered. At any rate, all of the knives whether by A.Wright or by Blade Forums (GEC) are first rate, easily carried, and capable of tackling most any task that might come along in our daily adventures.

The GEC 74 is one of my favorite single blade knives... along with the 2019 Forum knife. Although, the 23 is right up there with 'em....

Right with you there. The GEC #74 fits the criteria I mentioned earlier.

I like these kind of threads, gives you a chance to sit back and think over your knife needs and bias  Change is always there and cannot be stopped, experience and even whim can colour this too. I've never understood the so called knife enthusiast who would confine themselves to just one type of knife, it's stupefyingly dull- you may as well carry no knife or just a box cutter! Tastes alter, they too must obey the laws of change but certain tastes become basic in the knife connoisseur's palete.

Currently, perhaps a year or two, I find myself liking to carry a Stockman under 4" coupled with a single blade of some sort- Spear, Straight Edge, Drop-Point usually, less so Clip which I prefer in a Stockman arrangement. Unlike most knife enthusiasts and the OP I'm not very struck on same end Jack knives - much prefer a blade each end Pen style which is generally slimmer and better to open in my view. A same end Jack just makes me want a Stockman, so that's how it goes:D What I tend to favour is having one of the knives carbon and the other stainless of some sort, I use my pocket-knives to cut food and generally prefer stainless for this but carbon patinates very well from fruits- can impart flavour though. Also a fan of Modern Traditionals as I greatly admire M390 in them, Lionsteel or Viper knives are particularly good in this respect.

Fact is, Traditionals offer such a variety of riches in materials, patterns, sizes, steels that it's a pity not to relish this as much as possible, like with foods - but then, we all do have pretty strong biases there, how can anybody abide liver?:Do_O:poop:

I most love a small knife 3.5" or less, typically slipjoints, and I have more sub 3" 2 blade pen knives than anything but nothing is absolute.
I have my top preferences, but they don't keep me from carrying and enjoying knives that don't quite fit those preferences.
Single blades, lockbacks, larger knives, a knife can appeal to me for any number of reasons as long as it's not any of the things I specifically dislike and avoid.

I have different types of knives I prefer for certain specific tasks, but for EDC I seem to gravitate towards large, single-blade peasant-style knives. With or without a spring or lock doesn’t seem to matter to me. I have a strong preference for carbon steel.

I have longish fingers, and anything under 3-5/8” closed is uncomfortable for me to handle. 4” and up is my preference. Easy to pinch open, and one-handed closing is a big plus.

I am probably something of an outlier on the Porch, in that I don’t care as much for multiblade slipjoints, or take an interest in all the various model numbers and handle material variations.

Any idea as to why you prefer a locking blade?

I grew up thinking that locking was better than non-locking - now, I'm not so sure.

Lately, I've been carrying a pocketable fixed blade and a slipjoint. Little fixed blade takes care of 99%+ of actual cutting and the slipjoint is just kinda there for fiddling with.

My little fixed blade (recycled pic):

I primarily like locking blades to keep my fingers when I do something stupid. I understand the rules but I will invariably do something stupid and I like the added protection a locking blade gives me.

Understood.

I try not to do stupid stuff with my knives, but it's on the basis of protecting the knives!

You make a good point about the fingers! 🤣

What I put in my pockets usually varies from day to day depending on what I think I will be doing that day . You have to know that at my age my grip is not what it used to be and my fingernails are not as sturdy as they used to be so being able to pinch open the blade is a real plus . If I believe that I will be working with a knife , I will usually have one or both of these in my pockets plus maybe a small fixed blade . I have found that for me the Lambfoot and Sheepfoot blades are the most useful for me .

If I am going to be out and about , I will randomly choose any one or two of any number of my collection . Favorite patterns are Barlows , GEC 72 , 73 , 74 and Stag and Ironwood .
So I may not even have an EDC at all .

Question for the bunny knife fans: is there any reason to prefer a #39 to a #15?

I like my bunny knife and also find myself grabbing it a lot… I think it’s because it’s the forum knife/the pattern history, and also because it’s plain enough that my mind says “use it, polish those handles with honest wear” whereas for the prettier knives I usually covet (I’d like the knife better, theoretically, if it were straight, with a shield, endcap, and fluted bolster…) my mind says “be careful lest you scratch the bolster.” The bunny knife has some good blade choices and I just put it in my pocket.

My preferences for EDC change depending on the situation I'm in. I divide into three basic categories of carry:
1) when at home
2) when at work
3) when out and about.

I never thought a straight-edged blade could be my primary or only blade until I tried the lambsfoot. Now, even with a multi-blade knife, I use the straight blade about 70% of the time.
While at home I prefer a smaller, lighter knife with at least a straight-edged blade. Could be a single blade lambsfoot or Wharncliffe, a jack with one straight and one bellied blade, or a medium to small stockman.
For work I pretty much just carry my 440C Viper Wharncliffe. Does everything I need very well.
When out and about I like a larger stockman or jack to cover all eventualities. Still like a bellied and a straight blade for utility.

In addition to the primary knife I always carry either my Evo Grip 14 when out or a Cadet when at home.

Right now I'm carrying a Case XX 75 pattern Stockman. I think about 4 years now.

I like an approximate 4" knife. I like a clip for the main blade and a smaller secondary blade. Preferably not in sheepsfoot. I don't care for those trappers with wharncliffe blades. I'll tolerate a standard trapper because it has a spey secondary.

If I could acquire a Barlow, like the one that was the bladeforums knife a couple of years back, but with a secondary pen blade, it'd probably be just right. A Case XX 92 Jack has been on my want list for a long time, which will be more easily found.

Pretty much a 2 blade jack guy myself. I like the look of a spear main, but, usually carry one with a clip main. Preferred length is 3 1/4" to 3 1/2".

I’m a multi blade person, preferring the stockman pattern over anything else. But I really do love the Bunny knife and the mini trapper has really grown on me too. On that one I wouldn’t mind a different blade, perhaps a sheepsfoot to go with the main clip though. The multi blade need I think comes from just the various tasks I would use different blades for. The sheepsfoot always was my most abused blade. But I have noticed my preference for a specific sized knife and all of these fall into that category. I have larger stockman knives but for what I’m doing daily and how they ride in the pocket these just seem a better fit for me.

When I was growing up, after about age 10 my dad would actually ask to "see" my pocketknife. Like an inspection. And I'd better have one. This was in a time when we wore them to school and everywhere. He would do it to my friends also, which made them better prepared for life.

To him, NOT having a knife made you vulnerable to little problems and that was not acceptable.

After getting a driver's license, we (brothers) were also expected to have a hundred dollars cash (minimum) at all times. Because "Anybody who doesn't have a hundred dollars is a vagrant."

I miss the old coot and to this day you'd be hard pressed to catch me without a knife and a hundred dollars.

Nominally, I prefer a straight blade and a bellied blade. The Improved muskrat or the Hawbaker works perfectly. These days, I prefer my Opinel No.6, which does most of what I need. For a straight blade, I turn to my Alox Electrician, which in truth would do everything I need, but wouldn’t be as much fun as the Opi.

I've tried a few straight edged knives and I like the low and fine point, but I miss the belly.
I've been fumbeling with this Bose pattern WC-Trapper pattern a while now and it may come close to a perfect EDC for me when it is finished.
Can't wait for it to be ready and do it's duty
