EDC of high priced knife

I have a small Sebenza 21 that I got some time ago. I've only carried it perhaps a total of about two to three weeks time since I bought it. This is the most expensive one I own. It costs at least double what my next most expensive knife cost.

So my question is this. When did you start EDCing a costly (to you) knife? What was that moment like and what was your thinking on it? I guess I'm still at a point where I'm afraid of banging up the Sebenza or losing it or whatever.

While it's been said many times before, it holds true: Life is short, enjoy man! You've already overcome the biggest hurdle by already owning the Sebenza. I've EDC'd a Seb for nine years. Handed one down to my Son, dropped another in a lake, and still bought another to EDC. I'm no rich man, I just have carried knives for the better part of my life and know that now I'd be unhappy with anything less. Just my .02.

Professor.

I would say use it, why pay that much for a knife and let it sit, either sell it and buy something cheaper or use the heck out of it. :)

Well said 'professor'...

I've always been one to baby my knives, regardless of price - only use for cutting tasks. Definitely use the Seb.

I carry a small Ironwood seb. everyday....it's a tough-as-nails urban edc that doesn't freak out non knife sheeple......perfect....use it!

I had that same problem for a while.

When you finally have the revelation that life is short, and that you can't carry your knives to the grave with you - you'll be much more likely to carry your most prized knife every day.

Life is too short to have safe queens. The more you use that sebenza the more you will appreciate it.

carry it and enjoy it and hopefully wear it out one day. i will carry a high priced knife starting the day I get it. There are no safe queens or easy passage here for my knives haha.

I used to feel the same way and to keep myself from "babying" or creating a "safe queen" I normally have something ready to cut as I unbox the new knife. lol

As soon as the knife comes out of the box I put it to use. My Large Sebenza 21 is my primary user and LOVE it!

Money spent on paper weights is money that could be spent somewhere else.

I have a large 21 on order with CRK, and i've already "coached" myself to know that it:

1. Will be my edc
2. I'm going to use it on whatever comes "our" way
3. I'm going to learn to appreciate the scrathes and dings it will receive.

With a company like CRK, it makes the decision to carry one of their knives that much easier. Everyone knows that the knife can be returned and "spa treated" :)

Use the Hell out of it and then some. I have an umnumzaan and it is my primary user. I was leery at first, but then I realized its not the kind of knife meant to be looked at. Its not rare, I can get another one, CRK will fix it if I somehow break it, etc. The biggest thing I dont care for is the fact that the bead blast handles scratch really easy. So I fixed that problem by polishing it.

Carry it and don't think twice about it. I did work my way up to carrying higher priced knives though, especially as my collection grew. The most I've paid for a knife to date is $600 and I thought I'd feel wierd about carrying it and it didn't bother me in the least. I was so excited to to have been able to purchase it I just wanted to show it to everyone (I didn't though)

Regarding the sebenza, "take it and use it" was what CR had in mind (I assume) when he chose the name sebenza, what means "work". As long as you don't buy knifes, paintings, gold, whatever just for investments, use them, that's what they for. Just my opinion.

I have knives that cost me 2000 and knives that cost 50. I carry them all. I love my lg seb w/madagascan rosewood. I dont buy knives to sit around. Maybe a 10,000 Loveless might sit in a safe if i had one, maybe that is why i dont.

Don't think, just cut. If I wanted a safe queen, I'd buy an expensive painting or a bar of gold.

I carry my large Sebenza all the time. Except when I'm carrying my new custom Demko, that is.:D What good is having them if you don't use them? Carry that sucker.

-how much does your car cost? do you drive it?
-how much does your house host? do you live in it?
-how much do your guns? cost do you shoot them?
-how much does your table saw cost? do you cut wood with it?
-how much does your girlfriend cost? do you..... nevermind.

this can go on and on as you know, point is buy it to use it or buy it to re-sell it which one are you intending to do?

in the end it is just a knife, a fine knife but a knife none the less.

you can edc it with out screwing it up they are tools bro, dont worry about it.

I'm currently in grad school full time, so when I say that extra money is hard to come by, I'm saying that I work two jobs to pay the bills. The cost of a Sebenza was several months of saving and forgoing other things.

When I got my Sebenza I was obsessive over not scratching it. Then one day I accidentally dropped it on the tile floor in my kitchen, flatting out some of the corners. After that I had no problems EDCing it.

When I got my Umnumzaan I took my keys and scratched it up the second day I had it. That way I knew I wouldn't be scared of USING the knife.

What good do $400 folders do you if you never carry or use them? Nobody except for a crowd of strangers on the internet even know what CRK's are, so I seriously doubt that they have the "luxury good" status that people impute to them. The day that I meet somebody on the street that even knows what a Sebenza or Umnumzaan is I will be surprised.

I started carrying a Sebenza a few months ago all I can say is that this knife blows all my other folders out of the water, it was hard at first to realy use it but once I dropped/scratched it a few times it was easy as others have stated you can't realy appreciate your expensive/rare knives until you use them hard and on a regular basis.

I've always had the mentatlity of use it! Your small sebenza will hold up to anything you throw at it.

I believe that scratches and marks on it are my "custom" engravings.

I enjoy using my small sebenza, everytime I whip it out and use it, it brings me joy! I use it all day and then I take it home and play with it all night, opening and closing it, and I know that even IF I break it (which I doubt will ever happen) CRK will take care of you, and bring it right back to new, LIFETIME warranty, use it till the blade falls off!!
