EDC of high priced knife

If I die today, it's likely some family member will pry staples and cut shingles with my Sebenza's tomorrow.

I'll use and enjoy them while I can!

Yep I traded the cheaper copy I had so that I would use the expensive one. I had a regular production para 2, and I traded it off once I got my CF S90V para 2...I have now used it for about 3 months and just hid away all of my other knives so that this will be the only one hat I carry aside from an izula...gotta have a fixed

Thanks for all the replies guys. My EDC now is a Para 2 that I recently picked up. Have a bunch of others in this price range or lower. Still when I go to the drawer to grab a knife for the day I still mostly go for one of my Spydies or BMs. Maybe because they're not as pretty? :p So in my mind made for more rugged use but I know the CR will take just as much abuse if not more. Damn you CR why did you have to make your knives looks so good! :D

I felt the same way when I first bought my Benchmade 943 (which is still my most expensive knife). After I nicked the aluminum handle while sharpening, I felt much better about carrying and using it like I do all my other knives.

Over at the Spyderco Forums, Sal Glesser wrote: "The "Spirit" of a Spyderco knife comes alive when used. That's when the materials, geometry, ergonomics, action and design come into play. Otherwise its a "fugly" piece of 3D art." As much as I love Spydercos, I think that philosophy applies to all high quality knives; their beauty is derived from use.

Do Eeet.

Sebenzas slice way better than Rembrandts or bullion anyways.

I've been carrying my small plain Sebbie for aboot 10 years. Just do it. Pair it with a SAK, and you're covered.

Use it! Put it to work! Let the Sebenza live up to its name :)
I've carried my Sebenza everyday since I got it a few weeks ago and I've been using it everyday, albeit light EDC use.

after i got a sebenza i carried it to work, excited to show a couple of people i work with. these guys carry knives and one is a "collector". the sebenza just didn't register on them. it isn't AO, fancy graphics, tiger stripes etc. for me i could feel the precision in it, like a fine automatic chrono. most people, it seems, can't.

I carry my sebenza all the time. Knives are tools and I feel they should be used. Obviously don't go stabbing doors with it, but don't be afraid to use it. My Sebenza has been carried since July of last year. Made me appreciate it more. Otherwise it's just a very plain, unnasuming $300 paper weight.

I even carry my Kirby Lambert small orion. My first custom and cost me the most I've ever spent on a blade (525).

I carry my large Sebenza all the time. Except when I'm carrying my new custom Demko, that is.:D What good is having them if you don't use them? Carry that sucker.

+1 - Carry it. Use it like all these guys are saying. If not. I'll trade you a nice knife you won't be afraid to use.

Imprisonment in a safe breeds contempt in the spirit of the blade.

ive never had a problem EDCing high priced knives, after all, i bought them because i liked how they looked and felt in hand. of course i worry about possibly losing one when its a custom in my pocket, but simply locking them up just doesnt appeal to me.

I Like to collect things To use. But there are plenty of people who just collect to own, like sports memorabilia and stamps, why do you collect?
There's nothing wrong with collecting knives to not use, but if you don't do that why not use it? If you are to scared to devalue the knife, you should have bought it used, or you can't really afford your knife and you should think about selling it.
Just my opinion.

Don't think, just cut. If I wanted a safe queen, I'd buy an expensive painting or a bar of gold.

How often do you actually carry and use that one? I only ask based on how pristine the thumbstuds look. I know on my Insingo, the blue was noticeably faded after the first week of use. Speaking of my Insingo to the OP, it's my most expensive knife, especially considering I had to buy two Small Sebenzas to get it the way I wanted (with Micara inlay), and I have carried it as my primary EDC ever since. I have reprofiled the edge, mutilated several cardboard boxes just for the heck of it, and resharpened it to mirror polish only to decide I wanted a bit toothier of an edge and ran it across my EF DMT to bring it back down. The cardboard boxes put all kinds of little spider web thin scuffs on the blade that can only be seen from certain angles, as well as a decent sized scuff that is quite obvious. Did that upset me? Nope, it just made my resolve to actually use this thing more concrete. I've always played the Devil's Advocate in threads asking if Sebenzas were over hyped, saying I felt they were, but not over priced. I gotta say, I'm starting to eat my words a bit. Maybe I feel that way because of how much I paid, and I need to feel justified. Who knows? That's a topic for another thread... ;)

BTW, here's my beauty if you haven't already seen her in another thread...

As you use and wear out your knife, its value to other people decreases while its value to you increases.

Very well said. I often think about selling some of my older knives that I've moved on from and don't carry anymore. Then I realize that they aren't worth much on the used market with all the wear and tear I've put on them. After that, I further realize that I wouldn't trade them straight up for an identical new model, because those marks are a badge of honour that I share with that knife. Then I usually smile, shake my head and flick them open once or twice for old time's sake. ;)

And in response to the thread topic, I would have to agree that knives should be used. I was afraid of carrying my nicer knives right up until I got fed up at my cheaper knives' lack of performance and ergonomics. I'd rather admire a knife for its design, quality, materials and ergonomics than its beauty, potential and price. :D

Reminds me of a quote on a sun dial... Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be.

I guess I'm still at a point where I'm afraid of banging up the Sebenza or losing it or whatever.

dantzk.

The day I got mine, I had a few beers, went down to the basement and cut a bunch of stuff. Got some good marks on it and never looked back. I own many very nice knives, but my Sebenza rarely leaves my pocket.
