EDC of high priced knife

my sebenza is the "easiest" to use of my knives. if you are really that concerned about scratching it, it can be refurbished. why get a really nice knife just to have it sit?

The day I got mine, I had a few beers, went down to the basement and cut a bunch of stuff. Got some good marks on it and never looked back. I own many very nice knives, but my Sebenza rarely leaves my pocket.

Other than the brews that's my strategy. I get my mind jacked up and ready, then I take my expensive knives out and whittle on a branch or cut a bunch of cardboard. Then I wipe them down and they're transformed from safe queens to EDC tools.

I have 3 XM-18's but 2 of em are still collecting dust though, only one has made it into my rotation.

A new lg 21 Sebena S35VN would be in rotation but every time I put it in my pocket, the darn thing sits so high that I'm not afraid to use it but afraid to lose it.

Pocket clip placement is the worst of any knife I own but still I like it a lot. It doesn't even feel tight while riding so high and I take it out and put the XM-18 in every time.

I have a natural urge to safe queen my best knives but I have found that if I stick a nice knife in my pocket and try to avoid the protective thought until it starts to take on that beautiful carried and used look, I change 180 degrees and I end up not feeling the urge to protect that knife but rather, I get a warm and fuzzy when I pick it up and know it's going in my pocket for the day.

Another observation of myself is that I can carry a knife for months and they still look 98% to 99% percent unless something happens like a washing machine engagement or I drop it on pavement.

So I carry my knives now. The only knives I don't carry are those I have more than one of. The dupes stay on the shelf.

For me, the psychology of the safe queen syndrome is steeped in the notion that I might sell it soon and I want to maintain its resale value in the back of my mind and it took me a while to figure that out. Once I learned that about myself, I either sold them or I used them - I have never made a measurable profit by sitting on a knife. I know because I've tried in the past and off loading them for a real profit is a lot of work. I was up to almost 90 knives once - I can't even fill up a 12 slot Maxpedition Dodecapod now but the knives are also MUCH higher quality except for a few everyday productions knives.

Haha, its funny because I feel the exact opposite. I love the clip on my seb, and I find it rides perfectly. Just goes to show you cant please everyone :)

Id say use your seb or sell it if you find yourself liking other knives more. When I got my seb, I knew it was going in my pocket or id sell it immediatly. When I opened it up, I knew it was the knife for me. I love titanium and I also really like simple construction. The seb was pretty much perfect for me. I have edc it almost everyday since I got it 1.5 years ago. Still love it even though it shows some wear. Even had the tip flattened by a girl in the hockey team I use to train (I fixed it with some work). It is a great knife, but is not for everyone,

I love the feel of the knife in hand! I'll figure something out. Maybe a sheath or pouch whatever ya call em for belt carry.

This is a brilliant thread for me. Got a couple of small regular Seb's, that have been in a display case and i now intend to use one for sure!
It is also nice to know that others have similar feelings and that nobody seems to regret using their former safe queen Seb's.

The same folks who tell you to use it, wouldn't loan their twin brother a valued knife if Lloyd's of London were standing next to him with a no-limit voucher. Bottom line is, it is your property and never let anyone tell you how to handle your kit nor caboodle. I lucked out and was gifted my first custom knife at the age of 18, took it to Nam and beat the crap out of it. Today that same knife would be priceless but like the Frogs say, say la vie. La vie. Never had that safe-queen urge myself, mainly because I was too dumb to know that certain things appreciate. Matter of fact, things never DID appreciate until guys with old cars in the barn figured out how to scam folks into spending top dollar rather than call a wrecker.

I was hesitant at first...then I thought to myself. "I have. 2200$ pistol stuck in my pants that has been run hard and shows its use...what is a 400$ knife"

I don't mind EDC-ing a spendy knife, but I just like my "cheaper" knives better - Spyderco, Cold Steel, etc. And I get just as much pleasure from owning and using a FFG Delica or CS Lawman as I do a Sebenza or other spendy knife. I bear no ill will against those who carry expensive toys, though. Thats what makes the world go around.

I carry my Umnumzaan - it's just too nice not to. Upon arrival home, a new pocket knife loses it's clip - and becomes a 'pocket' knife - so they can gain 'patina' rapidly. I still carry the 'zaan in a pocket alone, trying to slow it's process, when I can. It's an odd one - the Wilson Combat 'StarTac' version. Still - it's a knife - a tool. My BM 760BK gained 'patina' quickly - on the Ti handle - the black blade looks unused despite it's frequent use - not what I expected. My latest carry is my ZT-0551 - admittedly around half the 'zaan's cost. I still grab my seemingly 100% carry these days - a BM 755 MPR - when a packing strap, etc, needs cutting. Oddly, I have all three on me now - and I am headed out to cut the grass!

Chris Reeves didn't custom your knife. Your own use (or misuse! haha) customs it.

Hell, my better half easily buys bags and the like that are more expensive than my knives and you bet she will immediately use the stuff the day she buys them.

I own one Sebenza with Bocote inlays. I scrimped and saved for a few months to get it. I carried it for a couple of weeks but I just could not bring my self to use it much. I wiped it off and put it back in the safe. I then promptly bought a user Umnumzaan to EDC and I have used it quite a bit to do everything from digging around in the dirt to cutting wire, zip ties wand whatever else. I know....it's crazy but that's the way it is.
