to cut to the chase... I'm a teacher in public school. I would like to carry a small key chain tool that isn't obvious. Any suggestions? Any others in my situation?

any regular sized SAK will work if not to thick
even smaller is the Vic. Classic
Spyderco Ladybug or Jester if all you want is a blade
one of the Leatherman Juice models
or even smaller, one of the Leatherman Squirts

Generally knives aren't allowed in public schools. Zero Tolerance and all that...

What's your school's policy?

I carry a squirt and it works fine for me.

Zero tolerance is a bit loose in this case though. True zero tolerance means the science labs can't have scalpels and the kitchen can't cut their foods. Obviously, this is not the case.

Still, it may be wise to talk to some colleagues to get a feeling for your particular school.

Schools commonly set a max of 2 inches. Check your state laws, local ordinance, and your employer's policies.

Check out the MIDNIGHT Minichamp from V'nox. I capitalize as there is also a regular Minichamp. The midnight version has a light. I carry one one one my keychain and the light makes people see the tool as a simply flashlight rather than a pocket knife. If you need smaller, take a look at the Classic Lite. It's the Classic SAK knife with a light. Definitely unobstrusive on a keychain.

I can't see why there would be a problem with a Leatherman Micra. It has a small ruler, sissors, two things all teachers need, but also a small clip point blade, screw drivers, nail file, tweezers (could help kids get out splinters), it's about 2.5" long, fits on your keychain. It's not very noticable, it doesn't scream "hey I have a knife, arrest me for a stupid law please"... :D

Best of all, they're only about $10-15 if you check froogle or something.

does someone have some reliable info on what the actual laws are? I've seen so many different things, particularly living in CA: (under 2" is okay, non-locking blade of any length is okay, no knives are okay....)

Teachers ought not carry knives at all.

Given the deplorable behavior of a select few children, and generally declining behavior in most of the rest, a teacher armed with a knife is liable to be inclined to use it one one of the lovely little hooligans.

And believe me, your going to loose any self defense case if it comes to that.

Having said all that, I'd get a Victorinox Swiss Memory. The one with the USB storage device built in. What could be more profesional than that? It even has an LED light. You could just consider the knife part as "unavoidable bagage."

A sub for the class I hang out in had a SAK. Borrowed it to split a piece of pizza.

If a teacher can carry in school, I would like to as well. :D

You may want to read PC sections 626.10 (a) and (b). After that, familiarize yourself with your school's rules and regulations. When you've done that, read your local City or County's ordinances. The "info" doesn't get much more "reliable" than that.

For non-school related California knife laws, take a gander at PC sections 653 (k), 12020 (the "dirk and dagger" definition), and know your local ordinances like the back of your hand. All this information is readily available, all you have to do is read and follow it.

here in rural south Mississippi. Here, at our school, no one will even bat an eye lid when you pull out a pocket knife. I, myself, carry a Queen Gunstock and a Spyderco Endura. The laws here are based on state laws with our district being the interpreter of those laws. Nothing in our teacher handbook says anything about us, the teachers, not being able to carry a knife. I don't know what our state law is regarding knives. I really don't care what the state law says and I don't think anyone else does either. Just the other day, in the teacher mailroom, my principal asked a few of us teachers if we had a knife he could use. About four of us pulled out our pocket knives. So, I guess it just depends on your district.
I use mine all the time in the classroom, sharpening pencils, cutting tape, cutting paper, etc.. Just tell your principal that your knife is a neccesary tool for the educational process!

Twenty-one years in the North Carolina public schools system and I've carried a knife every single day. I've never had any problems with carrying somewhat large folders, currently a Hinderer Firetac Extreme, but I'm very discreet. I also carry a small slipjoint folder that does 99% of the work I need done at school. I carry the large edc simply for the pleasure and the quality of the TOOL. Oh, btw, I teach middle school (6-8) P.E./Health.

What about me!? :)

The Leatherman Micra is outstanding. The scissors work well, and the tool stands up to use.

With no EDC restrictions, I still haul this out of my pocket more than any other knife or tool.

Jeremy

Zero tolerance rules are for students not teachers and staff. Zero tolerance rules are for weak minded people, but that is another topic.

My wife carries a Spyderco Lum and a Victorinox Mechanic. She uses the tools on her Mechanic all the time in he classroom.

When I volunteered at her school, teachers were always borrowing knives from me.

makes me sick all this zero tolerance junk... I went through four years of high school and four of college carrying a buck 110 or buck-lite of one variety or another in a pouch on my belt... I never seemed to have it jump out and hurt someone ,but then again I am preachin to the choir...

It certainly is a good point, but I don't think that many teachers would brandish a knife as a weapon against a student. Lots of educators have little keychain tools and how often do you read about a teacher using it as a weapon?
