edc problem for a teacher

"Teachers ought not carry knives at all.

Given the deplorable behavior of a select few children, and generally declining behavior in most of the rest, a teacher armed with a knife is liable to be inclined to use it one one of the lovely little hooligans."
:barf:
Carrying a tool is not being armed. Carrying a weapon is going armed. It's a state of mind.
I carry a Leatherman and a SAK Tinker at school. Teaching 9th grade.

I'm glad that no one here has cut themselves on the dull edge of my sarcasim.

My wife's a teacher, and has been attacked by a couple kids (3rd grade). She has come home with minor cuts and scratches a couple of times. Unfourtunatly, the kids keep getting sent back to the class room.

So I stand by my sentiment that child behavior is on a bob-sled ride to the bottom of the hill, The bit about using a knife on a student was pure sarcasim :)

Get a simple Victorinox SAK or a small Buck Knight, or a Gerber Silver Knight, I carry a Spyderco Ladybug for small tasks, and it is a hard worker. Your personal preference. If it is a matter of law, I would check with your principal and your LEO.

In 3rd grade I was stabbed in the stomach by another student for no reason while in line for I believe lunch. I don't remember it all that well, but it was a ghetto school. The kicker is I was the one who somehow got in trouble. I'm not sure but I imagine it had to do with racial BS. The kid that stabbed me was black, I was part of the white minority at the school, the principal was black, it just sucked. My father who was a cop at the time even got involved but that didn't work either. Anyways, long story short, ended up moving out to the country and things did get better, still fights and stuff, but never stabbed again. It's really sad when you have to worry about 8 year olds stabbing people or even shooting people. Boy let's see, that was over 15 years ago, I imagine those inner city schools are a hell of a lot worse now. If I was a teacher I would sure as hell arm myself if at one of those schools. My girlfriend is right now student teacher, plans on being an elementary teacher. I'm really scared that someday she'll have to work at one of these schools. Luckily I got her a knife to carry and she never leaves home without it so that makes me feel a bit better. I'm thinking about getting her a Spyderco Delica or something similar to carry eventualy, maybe even a Harpy...

I don't care if the kid slaughtered an entire classroom, if it got out in the news that a teacher defended herself with a Delica against a kid with a knife, she would be crucified!

...Damn, you're probably right, but I would still feel better if she had even a SAK on her, not sure why but I would just feel better.

On my keychain I have:
Vicorinox Rambler (about the same size as a Classic, but a few more tools.)
P-38 can opener
Swiss-Tech Microplus 8in1 tool

In my watch pocket:
Spyderco Jester.

Though I am not a teacher and also carry a full sized knife, I have never raised an eyebrow with any of the above mentioned..

Was wondering, do you find the Jester to be pretty useful for it's size? It's kinda small like a Ladybug right? Just seems kinda uncomfy but I've always like the looks of it...

Nothing wrong with having a knife, but she would have to run away from the kids. It would be different if it were a kid of about 14 or older, but those little kids can be very unbehaved. When I was in third grade, the class bully had been bothering everyone in the class, and one day, as I was talking to my friend, he was annoying the hell out of us, so I socked him really hard in the nose. Now, he had been hitting me and some other kids for awhile, but the teacher saw me hit him, and the both of us got sent to the prinicpals office. Well, nothing happened to either of us, but over the years, I began to realize why this kid did what he did, in my sophomore year, I found out, from him, as we, while not friends, were acquaintances, I found that he had been abused, not sexually, but hit etc. He was starting a little self mutilation, I stayed away from him after I saw that, and he shortly left the school. Another time, a kid slammed my head into the lockers, the vice principal saw it happen, this was in 6th grade, my last day of school. Well, the principal grabbed the kid, and both of us went to the office. The vice principal was the only one left with us, and while the VP was out of his office, I hauled off and whacked the kid in the face, busting his nose, it kinda matched my own broken nose :D . The vp came back into the room, said something akin to we had our fight, don't do that crap anymore, and one of the teachers took me home. Kids fight about dumb ****, I've never picked a fight with anyone, never cursed or fought with any of my teachers. That SAK should not be bought as protection against the students, it should be bought as a tool for it's inteneded purposes. The Children of the Corn would come out looking better than the teacher who defended herself with a SAK or whatever!

I haven't really EDC'd my Jester, but from the few times I've used it, it feels great in the hand and cuts well, those finger grooves work wonders as well!

Though small, I find it (Jester) easy to open with one hand and the blade is actually big enough to do quite a lot and locks (which I like) and it's easy to hold onto. IMHO the Jester is much more useful than the blade on my Victorinox Rambler. For a nice smaller knife I think the Jester is well worth the (approximately) $15.00- $20.00.

They go for about $20 these days right? I might have to get one. I just don't like the idea of buying before I can try it, all the ones I've seen come in a blister pack so I can't feel it out first. I like the idea of the finger grooves, seems like it would add some much needed leverage.

Ah cool, I have a Victorinox Rally on my keychain now. I've always wanted a Jester, maybe I can fit both on my keychain.. For $15, mmm sounds good, must get Jester.

Put it to you this way, and this is just my personal opinion. If the Jester was the only knife I had with me to get me through my daily activities, I'd be perfectly fine. For most of the things I need throughout the day, like opening packages and letters, cutting string/twine, sharpening a pencil, etc, etc, etc ....... the Jester works excellent. You won't regret having one.

Note to self: Buy a couple Jesters, they sound niiiice. :D

Thanks guys! Sorry if I took this a bit OT.

I never had a Spyderco Dodo, just a cliche about the Dodo. Were the Spyderco Dodos any good?

I can tell you what I did to my other Ladybug. A guy on eBay was selling a Delica, and the knife I got was a Ladybug. I didn't know any better, so I proudly carried my "Delica" for a while, until I got my NIB Ladybug, and was stunned and p'oed too. Well, my first Ladybug, an old blue one, was duller than a bastid, and I tried sharpening it with my stones, my little brothers river stone that he got from a friend, I think it was Japanese, had it professionally sharpened, to no avail. I had the bright idea to sharpen it on the grinder in my fathers shop. Oh man, was that the wrong thing to do! I didn't know any better, I ruined my favorite CS Voyager on that wheel too, a real nice tanto medium. I was pissed off that day. The Voyager currently sits in my truck, for the real special job of opening quarts of oil, and the old Ladybug opens letters now, can't even slice through packages. Well, we all learn lessons the hard way.

Get a Victorinix Small Tinker:

http://www.knivesplus.com/victorinox-knife-vn-53133.html

Even most non-knife sheeple will recognize a SAK as non-threatening. Notice I said MOST. Not all. But this knife is smaller than the regular size (3.25" as opposed to 3.5"), yet has the same useful array of tools and 2 blades as the regular Tinker. The Small Tinker's main blade is less than 2.5".

I EDC a Tinker along with a high quality locking folder.

Good luck!
