edc problem for a teacher

My vote for a keychain tool is a SOG Crossgrip.

My wife teaches high school, the rule here is knives under 2" are OK. She keeps a green Spyderco Jester on her keyring. She's also the school's computer technician, so a multitool for her would be redundant.

Hell no, it would be great if I could legally, but it's not like that will ever happen.

During my time in highschool a lot of the students carried pocket knives. A lot of the teachers also. It was a small town highschool though, only about 550 students. I'm only going on 24, so it wasn't all that long ago. What kinda school do you go to? City school?

My point was not speaking to you carrying a knife in school (although I don't think that is a good idea), but rather to you thinking that if a teacher can do it, you should be able to as well.

I carried a knife all through high school. Graduated valedictorian last year. It's all in not letting it be seen by anyone who would care, and not looking suspicious.

I believe, and I know this is true in my school district in SE Minnesota anyway, that you can keep anything you want in your desk and it can't be searched without a warrant. Something about a reasonable expectation of privacy there. All the teachers that I've seen in my very liberal Minnesota high school had a Leatherman or something in their desk drawers.

I had a teacher in 7th grade who carryed a multi-tool and a liner lock and to this day he still carries the same 2 knives. when i was in his class he showed me them. i dont rember what brand but they were nice.

Ahh....the old days. I remember being a 7th and 8th grader and totin' a knife to school with no thought of it being a problem. At break time we'd gather in the hall and pass knives back and forth and even did some trading. Those days are long gone and I don't ever see them being repeated. I know that in the mid-80's, when I began to teach, I would bring a sharpener to school on Fridays and show the kids how to sharpen their knives and we ended up with Friday afternoon being "Sharpen' Day". Man, it was really neat.

What was the original question again? Here it is:

to cut to the chase... I'm a teacher in public school. I would like to carry a small key chain tool that isn't obvious. Any suggestions? Any others in my situation?

I'm all for trusting knives to children. But teaching them how to sharpen knives? Not for someone else's safety, but for the kid's thumb safety. I learned how to sharpen 2 years ago and I STILL cut myself a lot.

Anyway, my school district was flamingly liberal. I wouldn't have even dreamed of carrying a pocket knife.

Does harpers ferry want a knife or is he open to other tools?

I take my E2e (not exactly keychain size) and my Prybaby to school daily.

How about and Arc AAA and ask Peter to make a slightly smaller keychain size Prybaby for you?

The school district student handbook is ambiguous. Its either 2" blade or less or no knives at all. I know of no restrictions on the staff, but I don't want to take a chance and it be too obvious. Thanks for all the replies. I'll do some searches and see what suits best. BTW my dad, and uncles and their friends used to take their shotguns to school during rabbit season. They would lean them in the corner of the room and then hunt after school. That was during the depression though. The economy was a mess but personal responsibility wasn't in the crapper. But I digress..... sigh

I teach in a public high school in Indy and I carry my BK7. Well ;) I don't really carry it but I did have it in class the other day when I had all my students making survival mini-kits. I showed them how my kit could slide into the pouch on the sheath. You should've seen the interesting things my kids came up with to put in those altoids cans! :D

im a student now and i almost always carry something on me but mostly a Maxam liner-lock that i bought at House Of Knives and i know of about 4 guys in my class of about 15 who carry at least one and sometimes two or more knives on them. me and one of my buddies hunted on our way to school and came in to class with two hunting knives on our belts each and no one really said anything. hell our principle carries one two. as you can see we are really laidback here.

Thanks i didnt even to think to mention i am from nova scotia, canada.
the laws are different here so we cant carry karambits or autos at all

Teachers ought not carry knives at all.

These days teachers should be issued the BAR -- the Browning Automatic Rifle. That would quickly establish who has the authority in the classroom: The teacher.

Spyderco quit making their Dodo knife, God quit making the Dodo bird. ;)

Since when did spyderco stop making the Dodo? Can you point me to a thread about why?
