I'm trying to decide what to purchase for my next folder. I'm looking for something that I can carry and use without fear of provoking any unfavorable reactions.

I currently carry an Emerson Commander, but that's a bit too "tactical" for some people. While nothing serious has happened yet, I've gotten some "whoa!" 's from people around me. I also bought an Alaskan Guide Buck 110. I love it, but it doesn't have a pocket clip or a one-hand opening method, making it inconvenient for my primary EDC.

So I'm looking for a good, people-friendly knife that I can use as my primary EDC, with my Commander carried for backup. It has to be a decent performing knife that won't be considered a psycho-ninja baby-stabber by even the most "conservative" onlookers.

Criteria:

1) Blade length ~ 3". Could be a bit over/under but nothing too big or small. Don't want to alarm people, but don't want a dainty little pocket jewel either.

2) Good blade steel. Don't want to buy a pretty knife that only looks good.

3) Non-aggressive styling. No serrations, black handles, etc. It needs to be seen as a "pocket knife" not a "weapon".

My current top-runner is the Spyderco Delica 4 in stainless steel. The other option is the S30V Kershaw Leek, but the black handle might be a problem. Any other suggestions?

The new Kershaw Gentlemans Folder might be the ticket. Blade length is ~3" and it is a lockback that definately does not look threatning. Also try www.agrussell.com as he has a great selection of the type knife you are seeking.

Btw, sorry about you having to be a Blue Devil. A Tarheel would certaintly be a better choice! LOL

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Kershaw Gentlemans Folder: Looks good, but no clip or one-hand opening. Same problems I had with the Buck 110.

Small Sebenza: Would be ideal, but no money. Looking for something sub-$100.

Spyderco Silver Almite Aluminum Native looks so odd that people will want to hold it..

Being located at Duke, as your profile suggests, it is no wonder, being surrounded by pedagogical numbskulls, that they take offense at your Emerson Commander. Sometimes comman sense, is not an offshoot of higher education.

How about Benchmade's Mini Griptilian? You can get them in different colors like blue, yellow, OD, gray (and pink :) ). Just under 3" but a good strong blade in any of their several blade shapes.

Duh on my part!! You are correct. How about a Spyderco Spin, Dragonfly, Delica 4. There are some great Spyderco knives that would fit the bill.

An Al Mar Mini Sere is a good choice. A nice small tactical folder with big cutting ability, in vg-10, g-10, just what the doctor ordered.

Those Chris Reeves, with dog paw prints, are pretty nice, by the way.

I wouldn't want a dog walking all over my Sebenza. But I would trust a cat, because he already has his own switchblades on his paws, so he knows how to handle knives.

I'm looking for something without an aggressive tactical look, so black handles are out. The other colors are all bright pastel colors, which are too "fruity" for me. A nice dark green / red / blue handle would work, but those aren't available.
