EDC Recommendations

If you close a sharp knife on your thumb you will get cut period! It is not an issue unique to the tenacious. Spyderco knives are SHARP out of the box, much more so than some others out there. The only cut I have received recently was in a knife store when I was sloppy with my pinky when closing a ZDP Caly 3. It drew blood instantly. If you buy a tenacious you will be fine provided you do not fully close the knife with your thumb on the liner lock in front of the blade. The Military would do the same. With a liner lock you must disengage the lock then close the blade when your thumb is clear not try to unlock and close in one motion.

I know I'm being foolish but I can't help it.

On a related note, do you prefer lock back or liner lock folders? Lock backs seem more secure to me.

I personally have more liner locks so that is a more natural ingrained motion for me to unlock a knife. I don't have a strong preference between liner lock, lock back, axis, or frame lock. All are plenty strong when properly made and fitted. Then again I use a slip joint SAK from time to time and have managed not to lose a finger using it either. I think lock strength is a WAY overblown topic on the knife forums. I don't really care which has the theoretical strength advantage I am not going to drive my folder into a tree and use it as a step. All are plenty strong including a slip joint to prevent unintended closing during normal use.

That being said I did not care for the Tmax with the magnetic lock because it was much less tension than a slip joint. It was an interesting design but not a very viable concept in my book. I don't care for the Para style lock not because it is inferior simply because it is very unnatural for me to use and I find it somewhat clumsy for me to close yet many people love that lock design.

Hey all. I'm brand new to these forums, which is obvious :p, and would like to know what Spydercos you guys use for EDC and what you would recommend.

My price range is somewhat limited (no more than $65). Keep in mind that I don't plan on cutting wood or anything but just need it for light tasks. Thanks.

You really can't beat a Delica with VG10 IMHO for the price you want to spend. From your description it will more than handle anything you're going to throw at it on a regular basis.

I'm a huge Spyderco fan, and I've tried most of the current lineup.

Honestly, I don't see how the Delica/Endura are seen as competitors to the Native S30V. In my opinion, and experience, the Native is simply in another league. The handle fits most hands better and the texture used on the FRN makes it feel much higher quality than the delica/endura's. I like VG10 quite a bit, but I'm completely sold on S30V.

I've owned both versions of the Native and liked them about equally, although if I had to choose one, I'd take the S30V. The only part I really miss about the other one is the wire clip.

Another one of my low cost favorites is the centofante. A nice, clean, high quality feeling FRN folder.

Outside of Spyderco, you should DEFINITELY check out a Kershaw RAM, which I claim to be, overall, and objectively speaking, the best folder in this price category. The Kershaw Storm and Skyline are great and can easily be had for under 40 dollars. There's also the classic competitor to the delica/endura, the Benchmade minigrip/grip.

As others have mentioned, if you're willing to go up in price 50%, you can get a D2 Para, which is a vastly superior folder to everything I've mentioned other than potentially the RAM.

No problem. I like those models but don't have the cash to pick them up. :)

KiloGolf92 - Like I've said already, I was considering the Tenacious. However, I've seen it cut two people on youtube (nutnfancy and cutlerylover) and am wary of that knife.

Does anyone know if there's going to be a new Dragonfly released this year? Hopefully it has some jimping and a better clip.

Any knife will cut you if it is sharp, you aren't paying attention, or an accident happens. For you needs and price I highly recommend the tenacious. I personally EDC my dragonfly (I don't like the clip, but I put it in my pocket so it isn't an issue). That's every time I go out. When i'm riding or in the woods or working around outside I carry my dragonfly in my pocket and both my Saver Salt and my Tenacious on me. Both of those are always in my bag though. They are awesome knives. I'm in love with my Saver Salt, but I prefer the flat grind of the other two. Any of the Spyderco's will probably serve you very well in your everyday tasks. But don't be afraid of the Tenacious. And somewhere I read that there is a new Dragonfly coming out that has a removable/adjustable clip. And their SS version already has one. it's an awesome little knife!

ndeezl - The Delica is a nice knife. Its prices vary and are a bit higher than the Salt I's and Centofantes. I'll keep looking for a good price.

Artfully - To be honest, the Native's blade design turns me off. Plus, the deployment hold is obscured slightly by the handle. The Centofante seems like an awesome EDC. Do you have one? How does it compare to the Delica?

GraysonK - I was seriously considering the Dragonfly but the lack of jimping and a good clip turned me off. Hopefully, Spyderco corrects all that with the next series.

You should be able to find a NIB delica on the bay in your price range just look around. And I'm pretty sure that a G10 dragonfly with a wire clip is in the works :thumbup:...but don't quote me on that one.

My first choice would be a Delica. I'd be willing to bet it was the knife which introduced many of us to the Spyderco brand. Next would be the Tenacious. I've handled it, but never owned one. I think that will have to change, it's a great knife. Third would be any of the Salt series, whichever flavor fits your needs the best. Personally, I've been jonesing for a SE Saver Salt. Finally, consider the Byrd line. Excellent value, and the Cara Cara compares favorably to the Endura at a much lower price point. And you can get it in FRN or G10. Here's the Byrd I'm looking hard at right now:

Endura VG-10 or H1.
I have for the last 10 years EDC the VG-10 Endura full spyder edge on three continents and over six countries while working in the oil field (off shore and land based drilling/completion rigs) and on social occasions. It has NEVER let me down when I have applied it within it's limitations. I have EDC the H1 version for around 8 months now and have been quite impressed. Good luck.

I haven't owned one, but my best friend EDCed one for a couple years. Actually, the only reason I didn't buy one myself back then was because he bought it and I wanted to see something different.

At any rate, the Centofante looks and feels a lot higher quality to me than the delica/endura. It's thin, stylish, feels good in the hand--the Delica 4 is a great knife, far improved over the last generation, but I don't like the handle or blade shape, and I do think it was long ago (the Delica line in general) surpassed by other Spydercos, and competitors from other companies (minigrip, RAM and so on).

The Centofante also comes in a wharncliffe blade style, which I also like a lot:

I know it's heresy, but I simply cannot imagine spending more than 35 dollars on a Delica with these other options out. Ignoring the Spyderco alternatives momentarily, at the normal 50-55 dollar price range, you're going head-to-head with a Benchmade minigrip which features an axis lock, and you're going head to head with a RAM, which has G10, and the best action literally ever featured on a production folder, and it has a hawklock. It also features spyder-esque ergonomics. I grant that the RAM has a small steel deficit for these features, but the Benchmade's 154CM should hold up fine. So I honestly don't see how the Delica/Endura is seen as a competitor anymore...the whole fanfare of the two, even as a Spyderco fan, has confused me.

I don't know why, but I always forget about the Centofante. My Vesuvius is right at the top of favorites. I just don't carry it much because it's one of the few Spydercos I have that would be extra hard to replace. On the newer lock back it's great that there are two good blade styles to pick from!

ArtfullyMartial - The Centofante is a blade that has really caught my attention. I like the drop point design better. The whole design looks very sleek and the youtube reviews are very positive.

EDIT
Hey guys, I just landed a Salt I on eBay for a killer price. I'll post pics and impressions when I actually get it.
