I'm looking for a good sturdy-but-not-heavy EDC in the sub $40 price range. I prefer a flipper/stud & liner/axis lock.

I've been exploring models such as:

Benchmade – monocrome, mini-ambush, what about Benchmade H&K?
Buck – Vantage
CRKT – Vertex
Kershaw - Zing, Blitz, OD, Scamp, Ener-g, Salvo,
SOG – Aegis

So two questions -

1.Best model? If you can recommend something that's not on the list, do so... :)
2.Best steel (edge retention, corrosion resistance)

Thanks so much -

That Ener-g is a heck of a knife. Great blade, and very comfortable handle. The flipper is cool too.

I can only speak for the sog an buck an I like them both but be aware of a little blade play an you may be able to find the buck in s30v around + your price range

Ontario RAT-1: stud & liner.
don't pay anything extra for the black blade - the paint chips off if you look at it hard. Otherwise an excellent blade for 25.

you could look at kershawguys blem thread, get kershaws at a way cheaper price. leek composite blade for example

kershaw skyline- light weight, g-10 scales, flipper, liner lock, $30 shipped @ amazon. see nutnfancy review @ youtube. i used to edc one but now i edc an od-1 because i like the frame lock and flipper without thumb studs.

Have you checked out the Spyderco Persistence/Tenacious? Spyderco's Byrd offerings are also something to consider.

This was my first thought as well.

You can get Kershaw Cyclones for well under 40$ now that they're discontinued, in both Large and Mini varieties.

A/O with on/off switch, Flipper&Thumbstuds, liner lock, sturdy as hell.

They're no featherweights, though - they might well be too heavy for your tastes. If you want sturdy, though, I highly recommend them.

Definitely get the Kershaw RAM:

Or the OD-1:

The Ener-g also has an excellent slicing profile:

Do you recommend any others that aren't on the list?

Cut-n-paste :)

I'll post my usual recommendations:

  • [*]Kershaw Skyline - $35 : US made, good Sandvik steel, nice the blade shape, G-10 handles, liner lock, hollow ground blade, bead blasted finish, 2 position clip for right handed tip up or tip down carry, phosphor bronze washers, light weight, smooth and fast flipper w/ thumbstuds also (non-AO)

[*]Spyderco Tenacious - $30-35 : Chinese made, high quality, high value, very good fit & finish, decent steel, G-10, handles, liner lock, 4 position clip for tip up/down/left/right carry, phosphor bronze washers, fast & smooth deployment, open construction, full-flat grind, Spyder Hole (non-AO), great thumb jimping

[*]Buck Vantage Pro - $40-45 : US made, S30V "premium" steel, G-10 handles, liner lock, very high value considering the Paul Bos treated S30V premium steel, great clip design that rides very low in pocket, hollow ground blade, 2 position clip for left or right tip up carry, open construction, flipper and thumbslot (non-AO), no jimping

[*]Kershaw Leek - $35-50+ depending on steel and handle options : US made, steel handles, frame lock, good Sandvik steel (other steel choices include S30V, ZDP-189/Sandvik composite blade), hollow grind blade 2 position clip for right hand tip up or tip down, thumbstud and flipper w/ AO

[*]Spyderco Native - $50 and up : US made, great S30V steel (other steel options available), FRN handles, linerless, pinned construction on the cheaper models, spear/leaf shaped hollow ground blade, 2 position clip for right or left handed tip up carry, light weight, linerless Spyder Hole (non-AO), great thumb jimping
All are 3 - 3 1/2". All are in my EDC rotation. You can get the Kershaws from Walmart. The Vantage Pro from Bass Pro Shops. The Skyline is my favorite and gets the most carry.
