EDC under $40 w/liner/axis lock & flipper/stud

Is anyone familiar with the Kershaw Zing?

Yeap , I own the black scaled version.

It is a great knife , flipper works like a charm , thumbstuds if your around bleating sheeple and don't want to frighten them. Very solid for a linerlock , not a pocket hog , the stirations make for a unique looking knife like it's big brother the Groove. Quality blade steel , not an expensive package and you get the best warranty out there to boot.

The only negative IMO is that the clip is a little odd looking , but it doesnt bother me enough to not make itpart of my EDC rotation.

Buy one , you wont be disappointed. Also check out Kershaw's other offerings , the OD-1 is a fantastic knife as is the Skyline !

The new Kershaw Chill is a fine knife too , it is made in China but don't let that fool you , it is a quality knife in every respect. It is very lightwieght knife , making for a good carry for joggers , light hikers or folks who dont want a pocket hog , the flipping action is smooth as silk , no thumbstuds to mar it's fine blade profile , well textured G10 scales.... and this knife is easily available for a hair over 20 bucks.

the walmart near me has the zing, skyline, od-1, blur, and a few others that i can't remember, ~ $40. it's a good place to try out a few blades to see if you like how they fit your hand and the different opening systems. i got my skyline there for i think $35?

I've heard some people have had trouble w/the bead-blast finish of the OD - thoughts? Does the zing have a bead-blast finish as well? Is it problematic cleaning the grooves (I'm thinking of duct tape, sappy wood etc)?

Do the Bokers hold a good edge? Are they as well built as they appear to be?

The Bokers are great knives. Some of the best values out there. I have the hyper and the edge is fantastic. The thumbstud placement is as perfect as it gets. Very easy to flick open. I'm not a big recurve fan, but the curve on the hyper is just subtle enough to get a pass from me.

Forget an Axis model at your price point. A Benchmade Vex or Spyderco Tenacious will do very nicely for your dollar.

I have not had any issue with the bead-blast finish.
But, the grooves are a bit annoying. They serve no function, and cleaning is a little more difficult since you have to clean with the grooves rather than down the length of the blade. This is a minor issue in my mind...and the good outweighs the minor issue.

Has anyone had any experiences with the Kershaw Tone; it looks pretty good on the surface. What about the OSO Sweet - I just saw it today in the 8cr @ 58-60.

one more vote for Boker Trance. drop point model though is my preference.
the ergonomics are superb, it's got flipper, thumbstud, framelock and it IS sub-$40 unlike some other knives mentioned above

Definitely get the Kershaw RAM:

The RAM is one of my favourite knives from Kershaw, could you tell me a little bit about those particular ones, where they are from etc.

Anyone have thoughts about CRKTs in this category/price range?

CRKT Drifter.
Available in linerlock with G10 scales and in stainless steel with frame lock.

Mine has perfect fit and finish.
And I've seen them for $18.

The action is smooth and it has no blade play.

My second recommendation would be the Böker Trance.
Slightly less good finish and action.

Excellent suggestions have been made. I've owned just about all of them, too. I'd have to say for the $, it's hard to beat the Buck Aphid/Vantage Pro. The Vantage Pro's a little more than your price-point, but I believe you can easily find the Buck Aphid for under $40.

I personally spent the extra $ & got the Vantage Pro, but under $40 for a smooth flipping folder that's a great size, decent weight, diamond wood scales, Sandvik steel blade, & a well designed low-rider clip...what's not to like?
