That Orange Box showed up today...

Very nice! Hope you enjoy it.

You know, it's wierd. I gave the whole Sebenza thing a whack. Just can't justify the whole "I'm gonna go beat the crap out of this $400+ knife" thing. Found myself hesitating to use it on harder tasks. Is the Sebenza 21 a well made knife? Absolutely. Is it worth the price tag? Opinions vary, but I say Yes, very worth the price tag.

But I don't go out and thrash on my Focus either. If I want to go off roading, that's what the F250 is for. Would I go off roading in a brand new truck? Once again, probably not.

So here I am, back to my Wilson ELC. A knife I discovered a few months back, and have been fortunate enough to acquire 2 of. Not too pricey (about $120ish on the secondary market), good steel (both of mine are in Elmax), great grippy handle, and good USEFUL blade shape. The DLC coating is also very stout.

So yeah, all the Sebenza's, Medfords, and Emerson's in the world won't do me a lick of good if I don't use em. Do people indeed use those higher end knives? Absolutely. Are those knives built for it? Hell yes. But for me, I just don't have the desire or the means to go thrash on $400 knives, so I will stick to this little beast.

LOL, I know exactly what you mean. Although for me, even a $120 knife is a precious investment. Depending on what it is, I'd probably coddle that one, too!

I guess like with any tool or device, there's a point of diminishing returns. For a good, usable blade, something like the Kershaw Blur in S30V can handle just about anything I'd want an EDC knife to do. After some hunting and pecking, I was able to get that one new for around $65 or so. And there are plenty of other knives, like the Opinel, that are so utilitarian; they cut well, are cheap, and just work (although I do think the Opinel also has a cool, peasant knife background to it that has some cache).

But knives are also an expression of art and craftsmanship. There are some beautiful and supremely well made ones out there. I guess that's where the cost comes in.

I'm a coddler, I admit it. But I've started carrying my Spyderco Techno and Slyscz Bowie in my pocket for EDC. While those knives aren't handmade or uncommon, they aren't exactly dirt cheap, either. So that's a first step.

But a $400 custom knife? I guess there is some cool factor to having worn it in well. Like a comfortable, faded pair of jeans.

One of my absolute favorite knives. Whenever I need something discrete, and on the smaller side for public carry, it seems like this one is my go-to.

Nice blade. I always liked that model, but I'm having a total brain fart, and can't remember the name.

That's the Calypso sprint run. Buying it was quite the experience for me; my train of thought at the time was, "Why do I like this knife? Why do I want it? It has nothing to offer me that my other knives don't have"...or so I thought. I came to enjoy how it packs a large, beautifully-finished blade into a slim, ergonomic and relatively lightweight package. I've yet to find a lanyard that looks good with it, unfortunately. Nothing seems to match the feel of the knife.

Closing shift at the library tonight. This guy's keeping me company

This place has horrible lighting, by the way.

Calypso! That's it. Ever have one of those moments?

I agree with you about the ergo's. I held one and it was great. It's also (IMHO) a real looker, sleek and elegant. I love long slender blades, thats one reason I like my ZT 0452cf so much.

Now that's a ZT I can get into. They certainly didn't cheap out on the materials for that one. I don't own a ZT yet, though I think my first will be the 0450.

I freakin' love mine. It's become one of my favorite EDC's. It's sleek, sexy, light weight, sharp, and an excellent flipper. It's so slim it carries great in the pocket too.

Ooooh, I didn't know it was slim. Lately I've really been into the slim folders. I'll have to take a closer look at (and have a hard think about) that blade.
