"EDC": What does that mean to you?

Wow, a lot of good posts here. Thanks everyone.

Perhaps a clarification is needed:

I assumed that om this board and this forum that EDC ment the knife we carry each day.

In the 1970s and '80s, for me that mint both a Buck 110 and an unremembered model by one of the SAK makers as a complimentary pair.

In the mid 1990s, I dropped both for a then standard Leatherman, and moved from that to newer improved versions as they became more usable and versatile for me. Today that is a Leatherman Wave+, though I'd get something else if they make a Wave-like model that is larger, lighter and has a better set of scissors . . . .and maybe Magnicut.

This item goes into a horizontal belt pouch worn just behind my right hip whenever I wear pants, along with pocketed car keys and wallet. The ED in this context means every day I wear pants. Retired and with a few health issues, I sometimes do not dress to go out of the house every day as I did when working.

This level of boredom would not interest me

I get what you are saying but .. edc can mean an item that you always have with you.
A knife being just that.
It can be the same one, or mood or taste or action for the day may change.

I carried a crkt everyday for years and also a utility knife for years without changing it up.
Now I carry a lot better knives and have a lot more of them.

I may change it a couple times a day or once a month just whatever I feel like doing.
I still edc a knife.

The only knife I would carry every single day would be a blacked out Randall, but Randall won't black out their knives, so I can't be held responsible for not carrying one dedicated knife every day.

In 2003 I went around on that issue with Randall Made. They had no interest in any glint reducing treatment at all. In he end, I had a gunsmith bead blast a #16 SP Fighter. Not blacked out but a nice uniformly non-reflective grey. I later on, wrote about this on the m14forum and got third degree burns from die hard Randall fanboys. Randall does make good knives, that are as good today as they were in WW-II. They are justnot responsive to that issue.

Having an edc is isn’t just about loyalty or a single preference. It’s aIso a means of dealing with life’s challenges and that can vary greatly. And there are other items besides a knife such as an edc flashlight, pen, watch, hearing aids, eye glasses, wallet and other items of necessity.

I have been carrying the 501 Larrin most every day since I got it. Before that it was a 303 cadet. I have also carried along with those either a Buck vantage pro or 110 depending on what im doing that day. Now that I’m retired I mostly carry the Larrin but also will carry a Buck 112 along with it. Sometimes I carry a Leatherman multi tool for more than just a knife kinda work or play.

I would say that if you have only one knife you carry your work and lifestyle is pretty limited and boring. I have a varied lifestyle that involves different tasks requiring a different knife that is best suited for that task. So my edc is a knife I need along with another one I want just in case along with other necessary items .

I take "EDC" to mean it's an everyday knife. It's a knife designed for general use as opposed to one designed for a specific purpose.
Examples:
If I'm going hunting, I want to carry a knife specifically designed to process game. Lots of belly. very thin.
If I'm going hiking, I will want to carry a knife suitable for that. Something not too large, but suitable for minor woods work.
If I'm going fishing...
If I think I might be in combat...

I have some special purpose knives. I have a lot of general use knives. They do a lot of things pretty well, but are not specifically designed to perform any one task.
They are "everyday carry" knives.

Monogamy is for marriage. Knife knuts need variety.

EDC means that if I say it too many times in a day my girlfren will whamp me and say stop saying that ; especially if we are watching a movie and some body pulls out a knife to cut something and I say : EDC. 🤕

. . . aaannnnd it means the knife that I put in my pocket this morning and will probably be changed out in the after noon and probably won't be what I carry tomorrow . 😆

Every. Day. Carry.

Stuff that I carry with me on a daily basis. Regarding knives that means I will carry "a" knife every day. (well more than one actually ;) )
It does not need to be the same one every day as I have accumulated quite a few knives that are able to fit into that role.

I like the variety my hobby offers me.

It's the same with the other things I carry on a daily basis, may it be a pen, or a flashlight, or wristwatches.
I have choices and it's nice to be able to choose.

There are also other items, like a wallet, lighter, etc, that I don't really made a hobby out of, so they tend to be high quality but eventually they get replaced when broken and never thought about.

My edc as I wear cargo pants a lot and everything else is just swag

My takeaway:

OK, So mentally averaging in most posts here what I get is that "EDC" to most folks on this forum means whatever knife they feel like pocketing today . . .but they always have one on them. , ,, every day.

Did anyone say their EDC was a fixed blade?

I live in Germany and a fixed knife up to 4,72" blade length is legal to carry (open or concealed does not matter)

So one of these ( These are just the ones on the nightstand ) is in my right front pocket on a daily basis + a folder + a bigger fixed in my backpack

I'll help you out......that's what it means to EVERYBODY........except possibly you.

Nobody in the knife world ever took EDC to mean the same knife every day.
