EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)??

I don't want to read all the pages to see if this has been covered, but head over to W&SS and someone could point you in the right direction for a firestarter I'm sure. I carry a Zippo, but it evaporates too quickly so I keep a Bic close at hand. I do alot outdoors so I keep multiple options available and at close hand, including a ferro rod I picked up from a forumite in a giveaway..

I also got tired of my Zippo evaporating too quickly. So I got a butane insert, the Vector Thunderbird:

It looks like a Zippo, acts like a Zippo, but doesn't use the whole lighter fluid and wick deal. And you don't have to depress a button to keep the gas flowing; the cam spring controls it. When it's open, the gas opens up, and when you close it, so does the gas. I'm very happy with mine.

It's not a torch, btw. And it's more windproof than any butane lighter I've used.

There is also the Z-Plus insert. This one is probably more popular and easier to find. It's a butane torch, but it doesn't mimic the Zippo look; it's one of those electro-quartz things that doesn't require flint. If I didn't find the Thunderbird first, I probably would have gotten this one.

Got an orange Kershaw Tyrade with deep carry clip in my right front pocket, a Case 2-bladed Copperhead in my left front pocket, a Leatherman Serac S2 flashlight in my shirt pocket, a Pilot G2 Limited pen in my shirt pocket, and a Samsung Blackjack on my belt.:D

THG, where did you get that insert? O.o Haven't found a reputable site that sells them.

I got mine at a local shop which doesn't have an online store. SparkyMark linked a site, but I can neither attest or detest to their reputability. They might be hard to find because I've heard that the company was forced to stop producing them due to IP infringements or something like that (you notice the similarity of the designs ). I got mine a few weeks ago, but the date stamped on the thing is October 2006.

I have to warn you, though, that there is a problem with the barrel that holds the flint up to the spark wheel. The way it's made is... strange. I still haven't really figured it out. There's a tube where you stick the flints that goes down to that barrel and to the spark wheel. The tube and the barrel seem to be 2 different pieces, though, and they're held in the case of the insert by friction.

So the first one I had, the whole tube would pop out due to the force of the spring. So I returned it. The second one, my current one, had the same problem in its infancy; the barrel would start to move down (the meaning the tube is working its way out of the case) very slightly when there was impact, i.e. snapping the lid shut.

I seem to have remedied the problem by applying a dot of superglue to the barrel. It hasn't moved since. So if you're willing to do that, then go for it. Just be aware of the problem.

The Thunderbird insert does have a lifetime warranty, but if it's true that production of the Thunderbird was halted due to lawsuits, then I don't know how that would hold up. It's made in the US, just by the way.

If you're not willing to deal with the barrel problem, I recommend the Z-Plus. It only has a 1-year warranty, but it's cheap and I don't think it should break on you. I'm not sure where this one is made.

about to order a zippo blu in dusted chrome and a second knife...but can't decide on which knife to order!

I like the clip mod on the JYD2.

Meto. HATED the batman clip so I ordered a new "Skyline" model clip. Drilled it out for the press nuts and mounted that sucker. I do wish I could have gotten it inline with the spine though. Damn bit drifted. :(
Still love it though.

CM,

I meant to ask the last time I saw your lighter - how did you go about engraving / marking the lighter?

Also, do you know the popular internet meaning of 'ftw'? Read your other thread about your soon-to-be knife making and what it stands for for you, but was just curious :D

F*** The World is what I've always known. Did the engraving freehand with my Dremel.

I've always known it to mean "For The Win".

I don't have any photos, but lately I've been carrying:

Kershaw OD-1 or Emerson CQC-7A
Vic Red Pioneer on a lanyard hooked to my belt
Burt's Bees Lip Balm
Eisenhower Silver Dollar (lucky charm)
Coach leather wallet
Nokia cell phone
Walther PPS w/ spare magazine
Car and house keys with Vic Classic

Newest addition to my EDC...
