Nothing so dramatic. It's a pipe tamper (as in briar, not glass). Helps tamp down the tobacco once I get it going. Puts a cake on the top of the bowl so ash doesn't go everywhere when I smoke. I've been a pipe smoker for as long as I can recall, but I've never had a cigarette in my life, but you're right, it does look like a cig holder from the 20's/30's.

I like it, I lost my pipe knife (was just a cheapy from tobacco store) so I've been carrying a small Remington pen knife and a .223 cartridge to tamper the tobacco :thumbup:

Going to give my JWS a little rest and be kind to my hand/wrist by carrying my newest, a BM AFO II with a low-rider clip that puts the knife all the way into my pocket. Also switched up my slipjoint and am going with my new Case large Gunstock in chestnut bone.:thumbup:

That's a cool tamper. I've been smoking a pipe for a bit over a year now and I still use my Czech Tool. Very nice. :thumbup:
