Is there a general chat thread on bladeforum?
I don't want to make a thread, but I would like to talk.

I don't know what I will be doing with my future knife purchase.
I would like to have two knives, a EDC folder and a fixed blade monster.

The folder would need to be under $250. I was looking at Emerson or Benchmade. I like the look of the BM 940, although I've heard the Tanto style blade is not really practical. It looks cool, but does an 'OK' job cutting and slicing.

The fixed blade is a little harder decision, as it will be more expensive than the folder. My 'dream' would to get a Busse, but they are expensive.
I held a Chris Reeve Green Beret at the store and I loved it. Some online reviews of the knife said they've had better knives at that price point.

The 11" Busse's maybe too long for me. I think the CR Green Beret was the 5.5" model, so I've never held anything longer. :(
Going to the knife store tomorrow to hold the 7" Green Beret, see how that feels.

I guess I'm confused about my buying because I am a beginner/noob. Too many select companies, and too many products :p

do you have a sharpener/sharpening experience? if not to jump into the game with a 250$ knife purchase seems silly (to me at least).

and let me make a suggestion look closely at spyderco they are my favorite brand after owning a few benchmades (which i dont like and wont be purchasing anymore YMMV) and kershaws, they have from 30$ - 250$ knives.

i dont have a lot of fixed blade experience so ill leave that for others to touch on, dont take anything i say the wrong way just my two bits. :D

Today I'm carrying this discontinued Benchmade/Elishewitz collaboration: the Mini-Darkstar....

HOW DARE YOU CALL THAT TACTICAL!!

That Les George is not tactical, it has no camo and no black on the blade...
doesn't meet Mil std!@##$...
not in Desert Tan, or Foliage Green...
No skull crusher pommel or blood grooves either...

Just sayin'...

Steelsnob, I realize it looks like I am quoting you on this, you just happened to have the first post back with your knife in it :)

Very nice knife.

and the above remarks were meant in jest to poke fun at the "tacticool" label

Hahah! :) Thanks. I'm usually a gentleman's folder guy ,when I first got this knife I was stunned at how robust it is. I guess a better term would be "overbuilt". It has a very thick blade and it's around 4oz in weight. I have no illusions of ever needing a knife this strong but it's so much darn fun to use and carry. It has a nice hollow grind that makes it a capable slicer so it's a good user in my book.

Still carrying my framelock Super CQC7... In a week I'll be packing this beast!

Case/Bose 07 collab.

Carrying my Falkniven U2 lockback today. Yesterday Spyderco Cat CF "not meerkat" and that is what I usually carry. "the spyderco cat" = CPM-S30v, carbonfiber scales, easy to carry, clip does not tear up pant pockets.

Others I have. I would have to make a list. To many, want to buy some?? I will pm you a list. I do not know how to put up photos here. I can email you very clear detailed photos of what you are interested in. And mods if I am out of place saying this here forgive my ignorance and yank.

I have not had any sharpening experience. Today, at the knife store, was my first ever hands on expierence with sharpening. I used the Spyderco Sharpmaker. You're correct, it's sort of silly to "Jump into the game" with a expensive knife.

I held a few spyderco's, can't remember the model names, but I don't care for them.

I spent close to 4 hours at the knife store today. Looking at all the different brands, and speaking with the knife expert.
I've came to the conclusion that I don't need a survival knife. I never go camping, backpacking, or out in the woods. I live in a major city.
At the same time, I live in a hurricane spot. I would like to have a 'all around' knife that would be good for post-hurricane times. Wheater it be that I need to chop down a small branch, or do misc. things.

For post-hurricane, would a 11" chopping blade be usefull? Maybe I just need a manual saw, or a dedicated mechete from Home Depot.

I would like a self protection knife as well. I indeed held a 7.5" Chris Reeve Green Beret. It felt good and strong. Is that the way to go for a personal combat knife? I don't need a 11" Busse battle mistress for personal defense, right? I won't be in the Military out out in a combat field, I would be at home on my own property.

Thanks for the help.

Going light today around the house.

Hey so I was looking at their classico line and now am drawn to the roller style (actually was originally but felt the duponts were too expensive)

Now I have come into some cash and am thinking I should go for a dunhill but these Coronas are hard to put out of my mind as they are way cheaper...any thoughts on this would be great.

If your financial situation can handle it, I'd say the Dunhill would be an investment you could pass on to your kids, etc. I've held and played with a couple of 'em last time I was in NYC and they were indeed all they claim to be. That being said...I'll compare the Corona's to knives since we're on a knife forum. I would love to have several of the custom pieces I've seen floating around on the knife forums (Elishewitz, Emmerson, Bob T, etc. come to mind). However, given my limited resources (six kids, including one getting ready for college in a year), I've had to be a bit more conservative in my reach vs. grasp catagory. The Dunhills and Duponts are like the customs, the Coronas are like the Benchmade/Spyderco collaborations as of late. Awesome materials, excellent designs, overall great knives...just not customs. The Corona's feel extremely solid and the three I own have held up very well so far. If you like the Dupont (Linge 1&2) design please look at the Lubinski's, that will definitely be my next purchase when it comes to a flint lighter. Porcshe Design also makes some classy looking one's in the 150-200 range. Sillem's is another favorite of mine 225-400 range. But for 100 bucks the Corona's are very hard to beat. My problem is the darn pipes I use them on are but ANOTHER expensive hobby. And around and around, I need to win Lotto (I guess I would have to start playing first). I hope I was some help, Smitty
