I find thats a good solution myself when flying also. Picked up a SAK Recruit last vacation at Lake Tahoe and left it for someone to find upon heading home. Its actually still in my profile pic! This is when you buy a Swiss Army Knife upon arrival.![]()
I purchased my Southard secondhand as well off the exchange here and it pretty much wouldn't flip at all as the bearings were about seized up. (it was a good deal though). The modded scale on it was already installed and is actually the stocker that’s been carved with a rock pattern as well as the G10 over travel stop on the lock side to match. That’s an interesting g10 replacement.
Honestly about the same as before so maybe mine weren’t too bad, I had already taken it down previously as I bought it used and it was dry and stiff and would flip but not freely. I haven’t had a new one as a reference. The washers have a slightly larger inside diameter.
Pics and video for reference. Someone who’s had more experience may be able to say how it looks. I think it’s fine though, no pivot play or lock issues.

Beautiful work as always!
Beautiful acquisition there brother and i think the standoffs and lanyard enhance the aesthetics nicely. Thanks, man. The curvature of the handle and it's relationship to the Tolk's wickedly handsome blade make the knife visually appealing, set up a great cutting angle, and the feel in hand is exceptional.
The action on your Spyderco Southard in your reply toEdgeoflife is very nice and the scale mods that accompany his bearing improvements are indeed very interesting, as you mentioned. I had the Spydie version some years ago, and while I liked quite a few things about it, the action and stock scales put me off enough that I sold it. I wonder if I'd done some mods if I'd still have it and would have later been tempted by this one.
I wasn't really planning on carrying the knife for a 5th day in a row, but find it still next to me on what's turning into a fairly lazy Sunday hanging around the house waiting for a 4 PM football game. I do have a lot of basketball paperwork, faxing, and emailing that I have to force myself to do before watching the Pats/Cowboys. In the meantime, I've got a couple pics left over from yesterday...

Edit: After all, why not make it Southard Sunday?

Imo the Southard requires a bearing upgrade to have a least an acceptable action.

I feel like the stock polymer cages were part of the problem (vs the metal cages which should hold up better) as when I took the knife down they did not turn freely in the scale pockets along with cupped washers…
